Have a big group and need somewhere to park the herd and eat a dinner that satisfies everyone's tastes? Try Big River. Food is competent, service is good, restaurant is clean, value is respectable. It's close to Nashville's touristy things, not too much of a walk from the Doubletree and Sheraton (though too far in summer heat). It's OK. Not great, but OK, and you won't be sorry. Just not thrilled.
House brews are good. Liked the red, and I usually don't like reds. Dark ale was just OK, not really enough body, but the pale ale was pretty respectable and a lager was tasty. Again: OK, maybe a little better than that, but not great.
Might recommend Demos', a couple of blocks away, first -- food's a little better, atmosphere is a little friendlier. No microbrews, though.
Still looking for a really good place downtown. Will look harder (with a smaller group!) next time. rg

Good Location - Nice place, the service lousy, the waitress performed minimally, we found ourselves looking for her when we needed something. They need to teach some people skills or hire people who have them. A bad waitress kinda took the fun out of the good beer.

Given the previous posts I wasn't too excited about my visit here but was pleasantly surprised! The waiter had zero personality but the beer and food made up for it. I had the smoked chicken enchiladas which were fantastic. Beer: The Sweet Magnolia Brown was amazing! The other beers were fine but unremarkable.

Stopped in late at night (11 PM) for dinner and a beer. Went with the Beer Sampler to find the best of the lot. Unfortunately, none of them were REALLY good. I felt that the Nashville Steamer was about the best, but still only about a 6.5 out of 10. All of the beers left an unwelcome, almost gritty, film in my mouth. The food was good, as was the service, but overall, a "touristy" place for which I wouldn't go out of my way.

I tried the Octoberfest and felt it had some inappropriate flavors for the style. The Red ale (I forget the name)was much better but still a bit on the bland side. The food we had was pretty good. My impression is that this is a brewpub that tones its beers down to make them more acceptable to the general public.

I had a steamer and pilsner, I prefer hoppy beer and neither of them satisified my taste buds. There were 8 of us none were impressed with the food.

I'm guessing the other reviews here are from mostly local peaple who never travel to other states and have good beer. Although the selection of beer was good, the taste and quality is somewhat poor. The hops they use and processes give the beer a "sour" taste and not a favored "bitter" or hoppey flavor. I hope in time they can improve to a better brewing process.

Food was excellent. Well worth the money. Server and hostess were friendly and helpful. Atmosphere is great. The background music is a nice mix. Great location 3 blocks from the GEC, 4 from the Country Music Hall, and across the river from the Coliseum.

Was better when they had unfiltered Pale Ale, but the beer is great and the staff is knowledgeable. The Texas Chicken Fried Steak is too huge to eat. Great family atmosphere with accomodation for the singles crowd as well. Overall the best in Nashville.

I went right after they opened (11:00 AM)... Beer was respectable, but not unique. Food was great and everyone was really friendly. Went with the Golden for my Growler.

I read the other reviews and was really confused. As a person who lives in downtown Nashville, Big River is where I eat the most. The food is always great and I have never had a problem with the service. I always recommend Big River. I eat there enough to also know that the food and service is consistant.

The college kids took over the place from noon til we left so service was slow and our glasses were empty one too many times. The winter nip porter was nice and mellow and the thick brick red was as hoppy as I remembered. The food was ok but it was as pricey as the one in Orlando.

I don't understand all the complaints. Unless these people just don't have anything better to do than pick on kids trying to make it through college on $2.13 an hour (+ tips). It is not a career and we do not have to be able to answer every little question you have about plato and gravity. Maybe we are rude because you suck. Try being nice and tipping at least 20% and maybe you'll have a better review to give next time.

Everytime I pass through Nashville I stop into the Big River. I have never been so well taken care of. The servers are ever-smiling, managers around every corner to walk you to the restroom or take you on a brewery tour (without me even having to ask!) servers who run to open the door for you. I can't believe a place like this exists. I highly reccomend the food and the beer as well. YOU WILL LOVE IT!!

This place is pretty good; it's definitely better than Market Street around the corner. The beer was pretty good and the bartender was really nice, once she finally waited on us!

We were recently on vacation and visited this brewpub on our way through Nashville. You really can't beat the Beer, Food or the Service. The 16th Street Pilsner and the Sweet Magnolia Brown Ale were both superb. We were there for lunch, which was also great. The people there were all very friendly and acted like they were happy to have you there, it's a southern thing, and I wish the rest of the country would get on the band wagon. I talked to the Brewer, to let him know that he was doing his job very well. It was just a great visit and we will go back. We love Nashville.

I stopped in on a hot Nashville August afternoon and had a pint of the Magnolia Brown Ale. Very good beer, quenching and cooling. I didn't try the food, but by the number of people in at the time, and the noise, I gather the place is a fun after-work watering hole for office workers and conventioneers alike in downtown.
I recommend it.

On the corner of Broadway and 2nd Avenue in downtown Nashville, across from the Hard Rock Cafe. Pay parking lots and street parking is your best bet. Big River has a nice big patio with a view of the Titans Coliseum.
The atmosphere inside is nice. It is very spacious and open, with lots of wood and brick and exposed ventilation pipes on the ceiling.
The bar has about 12 taps, and it looks like all the taps were house brews. They have about 6 brews available at any given time. You can get a sampler of 6 beers for about $3.75 which is a great deal if you want to sample everything they have available. The server was very knowledgeable and was a homebrewer himself, and he also gave recommendations on other brewpubs in the area. The beers themselves were above average overall, although none of them were over 4.5%ABV.
The food was suprisingly good. We had a Sunday lunch of chicken fried chicken and a pulled pork sandwich. Both were excellent. The french fries have a nice seasoning as well. The food was also very competitively priced, and is surely less expensive than the Hard Rock across the street.
