I will go back if I pass through town again. They had about 15 beers on tap, and there were two or three that didn't quite measure up, but none of them were bad. The green chili beer was probably the first pepper flavored beer I've been able to stomach, but pepper flavored beer is still the worst beer concept I know of.

All excellent. Well worth finding. 15 beers on tap will suit every taste. Brown and IPA were my favorites.

This was my first stop at a brew pub. The beers were good and the selection was fair. Dinner was OK. I agree with many of the other comments about the wait staff. Slow and unfreindly. The bar staff was great. I look forward to visiting a few more pubs to make a comparison. If you're in Columbia, I would recommend you give this place a try.

The service was friendly but slow and several times I have been there and had to leave the table and go up to the bar to get a refill. Also had server assume that the change from a meal was her tip and brought no change...

I have been to over 100 brewpubs and was pleasantly surprised at this one. The food was very good with a nice selection to choose from. I cannot say enough about the service. Our server was outstanding. He was very efficient and attentive, without being overbearing. And last, but certainly not least...the beer. Had a sample of 11 different beers and overall would rate them well above average (Although they can keep the Green Chili beer). Good mix of light and dark beers, with nice flavors to most of them. Highly recommended.

Was there this past Saturday - big croud and it seems that their waitstaff is doing better. Good selection of beers with a couple of Belgians - really like that cask Mild, though. Also had some new menu items - maybe the owner/manager is reading these review - had a pasta dish that was good. Really would recommend this brewpub to anyone looking for some good beer and food!

Being trapped in Columbia, I feel fortunate to have Flat Branch around. It is the only brewpub in town and the only place to get good beers. Three excellent stouts on tap, Oil Change, Milk and Imperial, although the Oil Change is the only one offered year round. Overall the food is good...but the menu recently underwent a face-lift. The nachos now have a cheese sauce that will soak into the chips quickly...order it on the side. They removed the best appetizer they had...the "chips and veggie queso". There is a new vegetable penne pasta that has a fantastic pesto cream sauce, and they now have a brick oven churning out some nice pizzas. Now for the service. I usually sit at the bar and receive excellent service. If you want to sit at a table then plan on being out to eat for quite a while...and, if you want to sit outside, plan on being there all night if you want more than two beers.

There ought to be an architecture category, this is the coolest building! It may have been an off day but the two beers I had weren't so good. The Porter was kinda thin and flat compared to a Boulevard Bully, which isn't really a fair comparison. The ESB was heavy (too malty), flat and not very bitter, which is the whole point, after all. The waiters were fine, though it was a sunday afternoon and the food was good. If their cooks are reading this: you don't make a reuben with toasted bread, you grill the whole sandwich!

Thought the selection of beers was great. Food was okay service was lackluster at best. Although it does seem that these poor people have to run there asses from one end of the building to the other to get the food and bar drinks. Sampled pretty much everything that I could get my hands on and really enjoyed them.

Ranks on my Top 10 List. Have always had good service. Generally, I go there on Saturday afternoons before the crowds show up. Best place to sit is on there deck. Show up early, stay late. One of the best Brew selections I have found after 70 or so Brewpubs I have tried. This was the first Brewpub I went to. Might be the reason my waist has expanded since they opened.

The biggest complaint I've seen of Flat Branch is the service. As a server there for nearl y two years, I can surely sympathize. But I feel most people fail to note any reasons why there are problems with the service. (Of course, I quit there nearly two years ago. Things may have changed for the better or worse since then.)
1. Management has no clue how to handle a waitstaff. First of all, workers there are promoted because of politics and not on length of service or quality of work. The best looking female servers are always rewarded with the best sections. And the bar is usually understaffed during peak hours. (All of this leads to generally poor server attitude, leading to poor service.)
2. The establishment's setup has some serious flaws. No. 1 of which is the layout which often forces servers to fight through crowds to get to their section.
3. The brewpub is located directly in center of one of the most backwoods states in the country. (Ranking slightly ahead of Arkansas) All sorts of yahoos come crawling out from under their rocks demanding Bud Light. When they find out it's not available, there can be trouble.
4. Missouri is an extremely conservative state (financially speaking). Good service is often rewarded with a 10% tip or sometimes nothing.
All of that said, I still think it's a great establishment, and I made some good friends there. Lastly, I would kill for a Brown from Flat Branch right now.

Over the past 5 years I have been to Flat Branch 3 times. I have never had bad food, beer, or service. The Katy Trail Pale Ale is very good. I ordered that first as I sat by the taps. Upon tasting it, I thought the bartender had given me the IPA. My next beer was an IPA and it was even hoppier! Both were excellent. The Oil change Stout is very good also. It was choccolaty but not sweet--even after having the IPA. On tap the day I was there (3 June 2000) were: IPA, Hudson's ESB, Honey Wheat, Scottish Ale, Belgian, Katy Trail Pale Ale, Green Chili, Oil Change Stout, Schwarzbier, Mai Bock, Steam Style Rye. Maybe I've always been lucky when I was there, but I have nothing to complain about.

Service was terrible. Food was uninteresting, and not prepared well. Beer was ok, decent selection. Atmosphere was less than friendly.

As I understand it the Flat Branch has just been re-modeled and had its menu re-vamped. This may take care of the only real complaint I ever had with the place, which was that I went there so often that the menu was getting kind of old. Sort of a back-handed criticism, when you think about it.
The Flat Branch's beer is truly exceptional. There is always a wide selection and it changes often. I lived in Columbia for two years and in that time had only one beer there I didn't enjoy (an ill-conceived Raspberry.) I have since left the area and an jonesin' hard for a Katy Trail Pale Ale.
We always found the service perfectly adequate (this from someone who was there once a week or more) and the appetizers are large, tasty, and cheap. While the entrees were not spectacular, they were adequate. The Flat Branch has frequent specials and events and the place itself is very pleasant and classy, with some popular outdoor seating. The beers are reasonably priced as well.
I miss this place like crazy! It has got to be my favorite brewpub in the country.

I have to agree with many other reviewers that service is lacking at this establishment, however, the food is reasonably priced (the nacho platter is to die for!) and the IPA is among the best I've had. I'll continue to go back.

I don't know what it is about Flat Branch Brewpub, but they seem to attract the worst kind of waitstaff. Normally I'm a stickler for this kind of thing, but... I find that the selection of brews combined with a decent menu lead me there more often than not.

An above average brewpub, and that's a feat, considering it's in a college town with no competition for a long ways in either direction. (I don't know if Jeff City has a bp.) The Katy Trail Pale and ESB were both excellent (but the KTP not hoppy enough). Stout was pretty good. Seasonal was a pumpkin ale which surprised me--it didn't taste like a ginger-spiced pumpkin pie like these offerings usually do and was really pretty good. Good vegetarian options. The place is comfy and friendly, but it took FOREVER for our waitress to bring the second round. Sit at the bar.

The beer can be kind of green. Only one pint can give me a headache the next day! They have a great selection though, rotate their beers frequently, but always have some regulars available.

Since this is the ONLY brewpub in Columbia and we are in the middle of AB land it is not bad. Having spent most of my time in the Cleveland and Columbus OH area Pubs this is not in the same league... The beers are good and after a talk with the brewer I know why most of their brews have the same finish, they only use a few types of hopps (cascade mostly). The selection is good the Oil Change Stout is the best on their taps. The Porter is fair, the brown is light and their trademark Katy Pale Trail is the local favorite (not mine). Even with the numerous styles on their taps too many of the brews have the same finish. The service is lousy, this a bar that has happy hour twice daily and if you count on the waiter to bring the beers you can get two or three in the two hours...(you can be in view of other servers but will be refused service until your server is available) My advice is sit at or close to the bar so that when your server is gone you can serve your self!!! (even with poor service this is the best beer in town. (Lucky for them they are the only brewpub in Columbia)

I've been to over 80 brewpubs across the USA and this is the best. The hand drawn Hudsons ESB is tops as well as their IPA and Kati Trail Pale Ale. They do an excellent job of rotating their various ales (usually around 10-12 on tap). I make the 270 mile trip about once a quarter from Central IL. If anyone from around the Boomington/Peoria area is interested in sharing beer runs, pls send me a note.

The selection of beer at Flat Branch is quite impressive. If you're a seasoned veteran to the world of microbrews or a warry novice, you're sure to be satisfied! As well as the beer, the food selection and taste is equally satisfying. There are many veggie items on the menu.
