I continue to hope that these guys will get it and put out a high end product. I was extremely disappointed with their seasonal IPA. This brewery consistently tries to brew transitional beers, a light, not true to the style version that is not a big step from a traditional American lager like Bud. Because the brewery under previous ownership had made a good IPA in the 90's I was hoping that this would be similar. I also was excited because I thought that the price would be more reasonable than most IPA's available. However, I was very disappointed. The IPA had a mild hop character and as is the case with their craft brewed line, there was no mention that the beer was all malt. My guess is that it was not as this has never been mentioned with any of the beers that they brew. I really think that this brewery needs to look at its marketing strategy. If they are going to make an attempt to get into the craft beer market they need to go full steam ahead. In my opinion they appear to be targeting a market that is almost non-existant or at least will not be a return customer. I don't think breweries can be successful if they try to be a transitional beer, not a true craft brew but not far from that american lager people are comfortable with. This IPA is like having bread where the flour isn't bleached white but otherwise it is Wonder. It really isn't worth the extra .50 or $1.00 that you have to spend.

First, let me mention that this is not a place to go for a sampler or food. The location is strictly for brewing beer. I did run into a security guard that let me in to look at a new hallway that had all sorts of memorabilia dating back to the 1800s. He was also nice enough to give me a logo glass and a can of Genesee Cream Ale (from his own private stash). He was very excited about a tour and tasting that was planned for the near future, but the plans are still in the works. He also gave me a number of places to go where their beer was on tap. He was very friendly and it's nice to see that even the security was excited about the beer. They also contract brew for Sam Adams, Smirnoff, and they're currently working on a deal to contract brew for Seagram's. So, did I get to try any of their beer? The bars I did go to that evening did not serve the beer, perhaps that will change during the week I am here, in which case I will submit another review (I haven't tried the Cream Ale yet).

Finally was able to score a tour of the brewery in mid August in conjunction with a BeerAdvocate event. I consider myself very fortunate as they do not give tours to the general public. Things tend to be on the upswing at High Falls due to their new Dundee's craft line of brews and some new marketing for the classic Genny Cream Ale. I like most all of their products and especially like the latest introduction .... The J.W. Dundee's IPA. I will be stocking up on this one as it will only be around as the Fall seasonal. People that may have had a negative view of the brewery in the past should give the newer products a chance. Dave Schlosser the lead brewmaster for the last 5 years has a strong craft beer background and really knows his stuff. Just look at all of the medals that they have won both nationally and internationally the last few years in beer competitions. Great products at a great price makes me proud to have High Falls as my local big brewery. Shame on those who would rather support Anheuser Busch or Coor's!

Clearly, with offerings such as Kipling Light, Honey Brown, and Shea's, High Falls Brewing Company is attempting mold it's future into a large brewery that can produce craft-like beers. The new marketing of Cream Ale and 12 Horse shows that this brewery is focusing on its positives in an attempt to downplay its past (Genny Ice anyone?) If they were to bring back Genny Bock and Shea's Black and Tan, I'd be on board their wagon full time. Until then, I'll two time between Genesee and Saranac.

The beer quality hasn't improved since my initial review. Supporting a local business or the fact that they make some products that are a little better than the national macro's still doesn't justify a good review. Pubcrawler is about craft brewed beer and the type of bars that serve them.

I agree with Steve Tuttle that these beers are slightly better than the mass produced bud, miller, etc... I don't understand why this is listed as a microbrewery.

The former Genesee Brewing Company is, of course, High Falls Brewing Co. Get over it. Genessee brands are still being produced and are still the great, drinkable brews they've always been. The craft line is good, too, for beer produced on a larger scale. They never said it was hand-made in small batches. All they need now is a tour and a gift shop that's open. It's nice to see a regional, commercial brewery still competing against those bullies in St. Louis. Keep up the good work.

The High Falls Brewing company is a large regional brewer. They are in fact the fifth largest in the U.S. That being said, their offerings in general are much better than the other big players, AB, Miller, Coors, etc. They have several good products in the macro brewed catagories. Their craft brewed products are far superior to the craft brews of like sized brewers. Dundee's Honey Brown and Michael Shea's Irish Amber come to mind. While they don't really compare to most true micro brewed products, they are solid beers. Interestingly, copies of the style of one of HF mainstays for decades, Genesee Cream Ale, is a popular, fairly recent offering at many brewpubs. I would like to see more variety in their craft brew portfolio, perhaps a hearty, hoppy pale ale or IPA or Bavarian style hefeweizen.

The so-called micro brews that come out of High Falls/Genessee are not great. The best of their selections is the fantastic, powerful 12 Horse Ale. This label has been around for decades and is tasty as it is strong.

The former Shea's, Dundee's and Genesee brewing companies have been all rolled into the High Falls Brewing Co. They have some very respectable brands in their portfolio. Would like to see the discontinued High Falls IPA or something similar brought back. High Falls product's are a solid, quality choice.

High Falls Brewing Co. is better known as the Genesee Brewery in these parts. This sub division produces J.W. Dundee Honey Brown, Highfall's India Pale Ale, and Michael Shea's Amber all of which are very good beers. But beware of the Genny Cream Ale for its adverse affects on the digestive system.
