Don't bother. A dead bar in a somewhat dead part of town. We had one brewsky and left abruptly, never to return. Headed to 75th Street Brewery and had a great time.

As I read the past reviews, it appears that this brewpub is apparently popular with a tight band of locals as a hangout and, despite spotty reviews from knowleadgable beer mavens, I decided to try it out. It was not crowded on Tuesday night, nearly empty in fact. The bartender stayed hunkered down with some regulars but she did keep an eye open and made sure our mugs didn't go empty. No IPA and they were out of a couple of their beers so, as a hophead, I found the remaining beer selection lacking. The pale ale and porter were good but somewhat thin, with a little upfront hopiness and malty tones that quickly washed out. Better than the local Boulevard but still average - not a place I would target on a return trip, preferring many standard microbeers as a better choice. For a downtown funky beer bar with comfortable atmosphere and that has excellent pizza and good micros, head to Grinder’s. Much better brewpubs with good food are found on the north side (Power Plant – no IPA but very decent pale ale) and in the south (75th Street Brewery – outstanding imperial IPA called Alpha Male).

More pub than brew, this is the problem with more and more brewpubs. I saw too many people drinking macro-super brews and/or mixed drinks than the house brews. I tried a sampler. They were all bad-soft-weak-watery and/or without flavor.

sounds like this girl is a chronic complainer. I bet she pulls this at many places. An accident is an accident.Your low self esteem fuels your desire to flaunt your "power" over other people. Do us all a favor, don't go out at all, stay at home.

I would have to agree. Today a group of co-workers and I decided to try it. After taking 15 minutes to get everyone their drink, the waitress spilled an entire glass of water all over me, and her only reply was "oh good thing it's only water." The least she could have done was apologized for getting me soaking wet. As a "courtesy" she gave me a towel the size of a napkin. When the food arrived (40 minutes later) the chicken was covered in Cajun seasoning, so much that you could not taste anything but Cajun. After scrapping off what was edible, and receiving the bill, I decided to confront the manager. He walked up to the table and stated "are you the one that got water spilled on you?" I replied that I was and that the waitress handled the situation very poorly. I told him in addition to getting soaked, her service to everyone else at the table was poor. His response to me was "the only thing I can offer you is to pay for the dry cleaning of my wet clothes. When asked about getting a reduced fee for lunch, or free (which it should automatically be), he stated he could not do that. Myself and the 14 other people at that table will no longer be customers of River Market Brewery. We are all employees at an organization very near this establishment, and due to this very poor experience and rude employees and management, we will no longer be cosumers.

It's been about two years since the last time i visited this brewery. Everything has improved except the service. They have a great beer selection. All the ones i tried were great, and the food is back to where it was when they first opened. I hope they keep it up.

I just wanted to followup on Dan's comments. Both times that I've been in here it seemed like the clientele at the bar were all freinds of the bartendress. Sort of a street/biker/tatoo club-not the most comfortable of atmospheres. Thanks for the warning about the tip. There are too many other nice brewpubs in KC to put up with that crap.

My wife referred me to this establishment. Being downtown, she has frequented this establishment on a couple of occasions in the past for work activities, so my nephew and I stopped here about 2 weeks ago for an early afternoon lunch. We had the whole place to ourselves, sat at the bar, had lunch and sampled beers. Nicki was our bartender that day. Service was good so we tipped her appropriately.
This past Tuesday evening around 8:30pm, I decided to stop in again for a beer on my way home. I had parked up the street. The streetlights were not on, which left a very eerie atmosphere. While approaching the entrance to the brewery, a homeless person was across the street on the corner yelling something at me, which I could not understand. I just shrugged it off and went inside the Brewing Co. This may not be the best location to visit if you are unescorted.
Once inside I saw where there wasn't anyone sitting at the dining tables and there were 5 people sitting at the bar. Adrienne was the bartender that evening. She had a friendly greeting and was very helpful in selecting from the six beers (soon to be seven) on tap. She suggested the malt red beer after I told her that I was allergic to hops. She then suggested a brand new whiskey that they just started carrying, so I tried this too.
The other patrons at the bar were four men and a woman who seemed to be acquaintances of the bartender Adrienne. Another gentlemen came into the bar to join them and they all began discussing all of the various types of drugs he had experienced. I was not interested in hearing this conversation so I decided to leave.
My bar tab was $26 which I felt was a little pricey for the number of drinks I purchased, so I started to leave a 15% tip, which I felt was reasonable. Adrienne stopped me and insisted I leave her a 20% tip of $5.00. I told her that I felt the customer determined what level of tip to leave – otherwise, what is the point of a tip, just add a cover or sur-charge. After this exchange the atmosphere quickly changed and she rudely told me to “just leave”. Then her “friend” at the bar said that I had better leave too, which I felt was some attempt at a threat. I decided that it would be better to do just that, leave and I will probably never return there again. I will also relay my experience to my wife, her co-workers and our other friends, to forewarn them of the tipping expectations and advise them that they may want to rethink having any activities there in the future.
Service is great at this place, if you are prepared to be told to leave a 20% tip. Heaven forbid if you don't!

Either this place has improved GREATLY from when some recent reviews were posted, or there were some bad nights.
River Market Brewing Co
Popular but not crowded, with enough staff to keep waits reasonable
The Beers. Blond Bomber Not my usual style, but for those stepping up from boring mass-market domestics, it has more depth of flavor, smooth very drinkable, especially outdoors in the summer.
Sodbuster Pale Ale. I really like big, assertive pale ales (Victory, Weyerbacher, Old Dominion, Summit Station) so while I was somewhat disappointed based on my tastes, was still a nice beer, especially for non-microbrew settings.
The red was clearly the best red I’ve ever had – lots of complex flavor, hops but balanced. VERY drinkable. I’ll return for this and the Porter.
The Porter was one of the best two I’ve had. Weight, but again a lot of complex flavor for the weight. And like the red, clearly showed the skill of the brewer. Also very drinkable.
8-ball Cream Stout. Very dark, very smooth & creamy, very long-lasting head, very weighty. While nice, did not have enough flavors to balance the weight, for my palate. For a beer this heavy, I head for beers such as Weybachers Triple Boch, Victory St. Boisterous or Old Horizontal, Sierra Nevada Big Foot, Dogfish’s Importal (all mid-atlantic microbrews).
The Food. Had the blackened catfish – very well done. Large, flavorful, moist, on whole-grain bread. Several interesting choices. Had the .19 cent wing special on my other visit – well done, with some celery sticks and blue cheese dressing.
The staff. Sharise was outstanding the 1st night. Good descriptions, brought samples, was enthusiastic about the beers, and as it turned out, the two beers that she thought I’d like best were indeed the two I repeated. I asked about adding sautéed vegetables to the order (the catfish came with coleslaw, a few hushpuppies and home fries.) Sharise asked if I’d like the vegetables instead of the fries, and I said sure, as I did not need all that food. Ended up costing just .50 more – thanks! My waitress the return trip was also very pleasant (sorry, can’t find her name), attentive, took time to answer questions, and when she could not answer my question about the bus route as well as she thought she should, she checked with the bartender, who was also very helpful and pleasant. As a whole, the staff was a very good reflection on the brewpub.
Summary. Rated the bears as great overall, food would be good overall, but for a pub, I’d have to rate as great as well. Did not rate the beers as awesome, as my frame of reference is some incredible brew-pubs in the mid-atlantic. But I liked them better than the Boulevards I had on my last trip, which a lot of folks in the area apparently think highly about. One thing for sure, all the beers were very distinct, and reflected a commitment to make quality beers with individual character. I imagine I’ll be back in the future.

They only had 3 beers on tap. I had the Wheat, which left much to be desired, and the Brown, which was pretty decent. I didn't have the pilsner. They told me they just got a new brewer so hopefully things will improve. If you stop after 10pm don't expect any good food, just a small munchies menu. One nice thing: never have to wait 'cause they never seem busy... even Friday night with a decent live blues band!

Stopped by at 5pm-only a small happy hour "crowd". I wonder when these guys do business?
3 beers on tap- Filtered wheat-not bad for a summer brew. Pale ale-very good but they were having trouble with tap and couldn't get it working when I wanted another. "Red"-didn't try this one.
Don't go out of your way for this place.

I stopped in late afternoon after finishing my rounds. Because of the weather the bar was not crowded. They only had 2 beers on tap because of some mechanical malfunction. The "red" was actually very tasty and similar to a nice pale ale/IPA. The "light/golden" was just that, a good attempt to brew for the macro drinkers but not enough flavor to satisfy me.
I'll call before I go next time to ensure that the beer selection is actually that-a selection. I don't want to rate this brewery because of an issue they can't control.

What has happened to my favorite KC brewpub? We use to be welcomed there, now our servers "go thru the motions" and are more or less zombies who wait on us, and not that well I might add. The menu is that of a second-rate sports bar now and they seem to be promoting Bud and Miller products more so than their own beer. Has this place given up on being a brewpub? This was once KC's best brewpub. It's a shame it has deteriorated to a mere fraction of what it use to be. Goodbye River Market, hello McCoy's!!!

Visited on a Wednesday night, and it was dead. Usually that is dead give-away that this may not be a very spot. However, they had an excellent selection of beers that weren't too bad (though nothing special). The food was very good also, but the waitress acted as though we were infringing on her time. After visiting the 75th St Brewery, this was a bit of a letdown. However, that said, I would still visit this establishment again, though I won't go out of my way.

Had a great break on a very hot K.C. afternoon trying their beers and having an early dinner. Flying Crow Porter was excellent. Dinner selections were very good - steak cooked the way we ordered it and their turkey burger on their special rolls was fantastic. They did not have the IPA this trip, but we tried some of the other beers. All were good.
