I have biased opinion but this is my favorite local establishment for sitting out in the summer. They have expanded outdoor seating on 3 different levels that includes a separate outside bar. The architecture utilizes a contemporary canvas/tube roofing style that is functional and visually pleasing. The brewery also uses a fog/misting system to help cool the patrons on the hot summer days. They usually offer several types of brew, most of which have already been listed on previous reviews. We are partial to the lighter seasonal brews and have always found them to be consistent in quality. One of our favorites is Graduation Ale that is usually pouring in May with the many local colleges in the area. The food is also very consistent in quantity and quality. The “pub grub” appetizers and salads can’t be beat, especially the confetti salad and Cajun beer battered shrimp. They are celebrating their 20th anniversary this summer which speaks volumes about the popularity of the establishment. To endure for 20 years, especially in Northampton where expectations are high, is quite an achievement. Overall I can’t think of a better place to gather with friends on a warm summer night for some great beer & food!

On tap the day I was there (6-16-05) were: Northampton Pale ale, Weitzenheimer, Raspberry Weitzenheimer, Daniel Shay's bitter, Black Cat Stout, Hoover's Porter. Guest taps were:Sierra Nevada pale, BBC Steel Rail Pale, Smuttynose IPA, and Majic Hat number 9. I had the porter, stout, bitter, pale, weizen and raspberry weizen. All were solid in their style but nothing exceptional. Service was friendly and efficient with a great atmosphere.

Nice digs with great service. The dining area is separate from the bar to keep us riff-raff from disturbing the dinner clients. There is a nice sun room if you’re eating and come the summer months a nice patio to relax on. This place was tough to find but worth wandering around and having to ask a dozen people (10 didn’t know) where it was.
I jump right on the Maggie’s Wee Heavy being a Scotch Ale fan. There was a lack of nose, but it was smooth as silk with chocolate and coffee coming and going all across the palate. The Unquamonk Amber Lager was a Vienna-style lager but slightly sweeter with a nice nose and all-malt across the palate. The Bitter was essentially the best I’ve had, although most brew pubs don’t venture here. It was totally full of flavor beginning to end, a very clean nose and no detractors. The Raspberry Brown Dog was good, but as much as I like my fruit they don’t belong in a Brown.
Great place, great service, great town. I’ll be back soon.

I salivated at the prospect of a brewpub opening in Northampton in the late '80's; the only other brewpub within 100 miles was the late lamented Commonwealth, in Boston. I was there when Mayor Musante took the first official sip (although they'd actually opened a day or so before). I was deeply disappointed. The early offerings were "Golden" and "Amber". The bar decor was California Sterile. The service was spotty, sometimes terrible. The menu was lackluster.
Eighteen years later, everything is different. I'm still not quite sure I get the menu, but the food is generally good and the beers are varied and excellent. The rooftop deck just might be the best terrasse I've ever been in, certainly the best without a view of any kind. The service is excellent (Kirsten is a goddess). I'm still not crazy about the decor and layout of the main bar, but there is a really great local pub vibe going on. This place has matured really nicely. See you there.

7-8 tap selections, plus guest taps. Theres a bar area, a patio, and what they called the sunroom. Ive been here several times and usually stick with the IPA, but they had Redheaded Stepchild (red ale)on tap, which wasn't bad. Appetizers were good, server friendly and helpful. Public (pay) parking lot directly behind bar entrance.

Beer - English style. Beer: B, Porter: A. Service - knowledgeable and helpful with the lowdown on the 5 area colleges. Food - good. Bar - bar area very small. Restaurant rather substantial (demonstrates emphasis on food), but loud. Bright and cheery, even though it was rainy day. Looks like it has a great roof top deck.

Did not like the decor or the porter. The pale ale was good though. I did not try any other beers. The place was too stuffy. Bartender was good though I won't be going back.

Simply put, there is no better place to be in the Summer time. The outdoor patio has a service bar, so stick to ordering beers there. No need to bash the service again, but the bottom line is you'll get better service at the bar. Beers are quite nice.

One of the very few brew pubs in the northeast that I can whole-heartedly recommend. While the menu is not too adventurous, it is well executed, and the bartenders can be relied upon to pour great drinks to order (take this from a Sapphire Gibson aficionado). The roof-top beer garden is the best – the perfect spot for summer brewsky’s with friends, and a primo spot during a summer rain shower. Service can be a little slow, but if you hang at the bar, that’s just more opportunity to connect with the very interesting scene in Northampton.

I have been to NHB many times and have never been disappointed. The staff has always been very friendly and has always been helpful in guiding me through the large selection of beers. Summer is the best time to go, just to sit in the sun and drink a beer on the roof top patio. Northampton is a great place to visit. It has a old city feel with tons of small shops to explore. WELL worth the visit.

NHB is a solid brewery and will likely give you great service. I tend to go when the business is slow so I can talk the the bartenders and other folks. NHB HAS ONE OF THE BEST ROOFTOP DECK IN THE NORTHEAST! It is worth the trip simply for that. Try being on the roof during a nice hot humid day when the T-storms move in... Take in the heffeweizen!

The food is uniformly quite good here, as are the beers. I've never had problems with the service. In fact, once I inadvertantly left the AmEx at the bar. About halfway back to the car, Steve (the bartender) came running up and returned it. The menu is not overly exotic or diverse, though the quality of the food lacks nothing. Great beer selection, plus beer can be sold to go. Worth a visit.

Last fall, they made a major effort to improve the service and seem to have succeeded. Last evening, they must have had a dozen of their own beers on tap from blonde to oatmeal stout. All are good (but it was a bit hard to detect the blueberry in the blueberry stout). We go there frequently as it's our 'local' and have not been disappointed in the beer nor the food.

Have been here about a dozen or more times. Usually an enjoyable time, but sometimes the service is underwhelming. There's always a beer on tap that will satisfy my thirst. Check it out.

Ate in the beer garden on Saturday afternoon. Atmosphere fantastic but service was very poor. It took us over an hour to get our first beer, waitress seemed not to care. One pint in two hours was not enough for me . Food quality was very good but slow.

After waiting 1.5 hours for our food to arrive on a Sunday night I can't recommend stopping for food. The beer selection was good, but our waiter was an Ass.

Nice bar indoors and a "beer garden" outside. Smaller than the sister brewpub in Portsmouth, NH, but they share beer recipes.

Very good brew. Been here a few times now, and the quality of the beer is very good. The Dunkleweizen, and Oatmeal Stour were quite tasty. The Alternator lacked a little. The atmosphere is very nice, the food was fine, and I recommend it.
