Highland Beers were very good on our recent visit to Asheville. Celtic Ale is on tap everywhere, though I found it boring. Better is the Kashmir IPA and Oatmeal Porter. Black Mocha Stout is a great dessert beer. Try a few of their beers if you're in the Asheville area.

Highland has been around, I guess, for 10 years or so. Their beer is excellent and is just another reason that Asheville is a great place for beer lovers! The brewery itself is in a back alley directly below (beneath?) Barley's Taproom. The guys there love talking about beer, and not just because it gives them a chance to stop a hoist one! They're very excited that plans are underway to move the brewing out of town to a location in Black Mountain. Also they are gearing up for the anticipated repeal of NC's 6% law by planning a Wee Heavy (appropriate for a brewery called "Highland"). Kashmir IPA is superb, but the Black Mocha Stout is my favorite, even on a warm day. Just down the street is a wine merchant who also sells beer, so if you're looking for a convenient place to load up, be sure to stop in!

I visited there a while ago. They were all just warm and friendly and the beers were wonderful. I think we stayed for almost three hours just talking to everyone there and trying all the beers. I definitely recommend calling and taking the tour.

I'm not gonna try and describe my taste of beer. It's usally either "I like it" or "I don't." And then there's a lineup of beer like Highland's Oatmeal Porter, the regular Gaelic, or St. Teresa's (my absolute favorite) that blow the simplistic rating out of the water. I love this brew company, they have a unique taste, and I feel fortunate to live in a place where I can drink it every day.
I definitely want to come to the brewery sometime, but so far I haven't.

I stopped by the brewery to check it out. They seemed ecstatic to have a visitor. I suspect they would have let me sit and drink beer with them all day if I were so inclined. I had their St. Therese Ale and Gaelic Ale in bottles while in town. They were both quite excellent, big tasty beers, but they were difficult to distinguish from each other. Their oatmeal porter is an interesting mix of sweet and bitter. Very rich, tasty stuff. They gave me a pint of Kashmir IPA fresh out of the tank when I stopped by. My big complaint about American IPAs is that they are too bitter and not roasted enough for the style. So it goes with the Kashmir. That said, it's an excellent rendition of an American IPA. Tastier and not as bitter as, say, Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. If you're ever in town, stop by this place and pay a visit. They seem very proud of their product and they like having people come by to acknowledge their good work. They're located underneath Barley's, so you'll have to go behind the building in the alleyway to find them.

Definately the be-all and end-all, as far as quality craft-brew goes in Asheville. Available in virtually every resturant and bar in town, their brews are top-notch. The Gaelic Ale (flagship beer) is either an ESB or Scottish Pale Ale, with a hint of smokiness to balance the smooth bitterness. The Porter and Stout are both excellent, as is the St Teresa Pale Ale. But my favorite (and the only one not available in bottles -- sob!) is the Kashmir IPA. Big bitterness, but not overwelmingly so. Very nice indeed, and all of the beers are worth trying out (and, in my case at least), worth carrying back a few bottle home...! //TB

I had a couple of pints of Highland Kashmere IPA at the Keith Street Pub & Grill in Clemson SC. It is an excellent brew. Now in hindsight, I wish I had also tried Highland's Oatmeal Porter, which was also on tap at Keith Street and at the Mellow Mushroom locations in Clemson and Chapel Hill.

Located in the basement of Barleys Taproom but apparently not connected with it. Their excellent beers are available in many area bars and is sold in bottles throughout the Asheville area. Their seasonal Kashmir Ale was the best yet. Too bad it's not available year-round!

If you are ever in Ashville, you have to hit two places. The first place is the Biltmore Estate and the second is this brewpub. The beer is great and the pizza is awesome.
