we are occasional visitors but have to admit we only started within the past couple of years. looks like the great years have passed but hope that they return. i have say that our last visit was our best. strange brew was good. blitzen was very good. the irish stout was average. what irked me most was nobody could tell me when some of the beers were available like the porter. also, they need more variety on tap of their beers. the oliver house itself is a great place to visit. great history and cool stuff to see. we will return. hope this local establishment can grow. advertising is a great way to make that a reality. i live nearby and never see anything in regards to highlight the brewery.

The upstairs....still closed, couldn't even walk around it to see all the items others have raved about. Of the beers, the hazelnut porter was the only one I thought was above average. The red was right at average but none of the others were worth mentioning. My score would have beet lower, but the porter was that good. I would drink a lot of that and that alone.

What can I say...it was my idea to give it another try tonight...and it was not what we expected.
As of October 12, 2007, they have completely shut down the very large upstairs to the general public, which was the main dining area with a very nice bar and oodles of breweriana everywhere. We were told by the hostess that it is now only available for private banquets and parties.
They have reinvented the old Oliver's Pub on the 1st floor into the main eating area, which seats about 50-60 I would say (no barstools at the stripped down bar either). The Mutz bar in the basement section adjoining this area by a hallway is still a bar, not alot has changed there. It's kind of a dive. But now they have renamed the entire downstairs venue Mutz.
Menu has been cut back to the bare minimum and is kinda pricey for what you get. We ordered a cheese puffs appetizer, way overpriced for what you got. Almost everything is fried. The servers were attentive, and almost a little pushy about placing a food order.
Fortunately, the "Grand Reopening" weekend special was 6.50 pitchers, so we inhaled 2 of the cask IPAs...still an excellent value at 8.75/pitcher regularly vs. 3.50 per pint. The other beers are nothing to write home about.
Reflecting back to the way this place used to be when it first opened, it has really slipped. The beers used to be something really special and the food was once exceptional. It was nothing to have to wait a very long time for a table, even with multiple rooms upstairs and down. When the original head brewer left and the original head chef left, things began to change and not for the better.
Our opinion is they need a new business plan, a new menu and more aggressive marketing, as well as better beer. I don't see how they can downgrade it much more...when I think back to what it used to be, it is SO freaking SAD. NOTE: This is the only non-chain microbrewery left in the Toledo area.
We do feel the need to support it occasionally just for the cask IPA beer, no other reason...

Beer left alot to be desired, nothing real bad I was simply not impressed. Food was pretty good but my service was real bad, probably not their fault there was a 9 top and a 5 top in the same section as me. I really liked the building and the atmosphere, if they could just rework the beer they would really have something going.

An honest embarassment to the City of Toledo as the only Brewpub left in the city. Maumee Bay Brewing has some of the worst beer you'll ever have.
The Russian Imperial is much more like a porter and is honestly just plain wimpy.
The IPA came off as a flat version of Vernors Ginger Ale that was lightly hopped.
and as for the Irish Red, Raspberry Summer Wheat, and their pride and joy, the Buckeye dry lager, well, let me put it to you this way...
Lets say you love apples, apples of everykind, from Red Delicious to Granny Smith to Fuji and beyond, You love them all.
Then some one comes along with this apple flavored candy, and tells you it tastes just like eating a real apple, and in the end you just wind up getting pissed off and disappointed.
Thanks Maumee Bay, Great music, crappy excuses for beer.

Kind, kind beers. The bock was stellar, and the Imperial Stout is as good as I've had. Too bad the food sucks. Why, if I order a Philly cheesesteak, do I get 7-11 nacho cheese?!? Why do the "Macho Nachos come out looking like a wilted salad?!? Good thing there's a Big Boy nearby, the food there better complements the great beer. Too bad they wont serve the beer there!

This really is a beautiful place. Too bad the beer doesn't hold up to it. Some of the worst beers I've ever had at a microbrewery. To say they were "watery", does a disservice to water. The brewiana in this place is incredible. Worth a stop just to see that. But as they say, "don't drink the water". Wink-Wink.

Only had time to quaff a couple of quick prints this visit. First I tried the Dry Stout which I found to be weak, watery and completely flat. Next I asked to try a sample of the Rye which had some type of infection or funk going on in it. I couldn't even finish the sample it was so bad. I've been here on previous occastions when a number of there beers had this characteristic. Possibly the lines need more frequent cleaning? I settled on the Pale Ale which was also weak and watery but clean. This place used to a good brewery years ago, I wonder what happened?

This may be the best brewpub building that I have ever seen, but the beer leaves a lot to be desired. The food was good, and the service too, but they need to try harder to brew truly good craft beer.

If you like to look at old breweriana, this is the place to go. Located in a historic building, The brewpub has dozens of old neon and moving signs, as well as displayed collections of beer cans, trays, openers, crowns, bottles, etc. Certainly worth checking out! The beer is pretty good. They have purchased the "Buckeye Beer name" although I think they are brewing it as an American Pale Ale, rather than the lager it once was. Other beers are pretty good. Excellent IPA. Food was pretty good as well, but the bartender was not very friendly.

I live in Toledo and wish we had a real brewery but this all we have. The only good beer they have is the IPA cask. The rest are below ave. Service is always slow and the food is ok. The complex is very cool, a 19th century building with a ton of charm. Too bad the beer does not live up to that.

Maumee Bay Brewing Co. is worth a special trip because the breweryiana collection is awesome. You can eat and drink in the museum section adjacent to the bar! In addition, the Toledo Brewers Hall of Fame material is fascinating and very well displayed. The building (converted mid-19th century Oliver House Hotel), on the Maumee river in downtown Toledo, is an architectual treasure. The food and beers are very good, but not outstanding. Don't miss this unique brewpub!

Had dinner tonight with a party of 8 (5 adults, 3 kids), upstairs in front of the bar area. Service was very poor. Slow to bring drinks, food was cold, and the pizza for the kids was served 10 minutes after the other meals were served. The burgers were cold and the meat was dry. Waited around 15 minutes for the bill to come after asking for it. No apologies from server or management for the slow service or the late pizza. The only good thing about tonight’s visit was the beer. Will think twice before coming back.

We visited this place on a trip to see family, Actually we brought all 8 Of them with us. Everyone ordered beer.I ordered the IPA on handpump This beer was blended perfectly. I tasted a porter/stout too and that was good. The brewery bought a beer advertising collection and moved that into their tap room, It looks great. I was impressed, We bought a growler of pale to go. The pale ale was not as good. What is it with pale ale on our trip to OHIO we could’nt Find a good pale ale. There food was good just stick to the standard pub grub.

I agree with some of the previous comments regarding the food here; the beer cheddar soup was the worst I've had anywhere(it tasted like cream of chicken?), and the rest of the meal was average at best. I thought the beer seemed to be hit-or-miss. The cask IPA was excellent, the Hefe was decent, and the Brown was pretty tasty. I felt the Pale needed some work though, and both the Imperial Stout and Red Ale were subpar. The collection of breweriana was about as impressive as I've seen anywhere, and the service was very good. Upgrade the food, weed out some of the below average beers, and Maumee Bay would be one of the best in the area.

Steer clear of the food in this place - simply awful. The beer is consistently average (with the occasional exception of the Blitzen Winter beer). The saving grace is the cool atmosphere, and usually good service. Since they're the only game in town, trapped Toledoans like myself have to drive to Cleveland or Detroit to find something decent.

Great line up of beers from a light and a kolsch to a holiday and a imperial stout. All were well made with no detectable flaws. Food was good but not great, atmosphere with large quantity of breweriana was outstanding. I will make this a regular stop.

Yes, the atmosphere is great (especially for Toledo), but the beer is another story. First, don't serve the beer frozen - i mean, it must've been hovering around 33 degrees, which was far too cold to truly TASTE it. That's a sign that they're not on top of their game. Next, if you can't brew a decent Pale, beware of the rest of the lineup. The Pale was virtually hopless (and no, I don't necessarily like my Pale stupid-hopped, either) with little malt to boot - i.e. it was THIN, THIN, THIN. The selection was ok, although the Red was equally thin, the Vanilla Bean Stout was a bad experiment, and the "Summer Stinger" was just plain awful - a wheat beer loaded with artificial lemon flavor. Yuck! On the plus side, the service was better than average, but don't go out of your way to stop here, unless you enjoy tasteless beer.

The food, the beer, the atmosphere, and the staff were all absolutely wonderful. I would need to write three pages to explain everything that I liked about this place.
If you have any appreciation for the architecture of old buildings, it's a MUST see. It's an old brick building with an enclosed courtyard within its walls. Narrow hallways between the rooms downstairs really add to the charm.
I would highly recommend this stop to anyone passing through the area. If you're not hungry, just stop in at Mutz (a pub within the same building, also serving their house-brewed beers) for a drink.
It's easy to find -- just a minute from the highway. WELL WORTH THE STOP! We're from Pittsburgh, PA, and we will be back.

Been going there for 6 yrs. or so,food has been getting worse, except the burger! Handpulled IPA is SUPER! Eric does a great job on it,Thanks to Brian Cook, who came up with that recipe.Beer is served in plastic cups in the Pub,if you don't belong to their "elite?" mug club! No slam on the good people that do. I'm very disappointed with the owners! Great atmosphere for quaffing.
