I have to temper the review a bit since I stopped at Pizza Port in Solana Beach before stopping here. Karl Strauss had very good beer, excellent food, in a very nice location. Well worth the visit.

I was fortunate enough to be staying one block from Karl Strauss and believe me, that IS fortunate! This small chain has great food and beer, and is all around a wonderful brewpub.

The senior-most of all currently active San Diego brewpubs, Karl Strauss is King. While the beers are not always true-to-style (e.g. the Amber Lager the flagship brew of the company, is more of an ale), it's a very rare day indeed when you don't get a tasty brew off the tap...//TSB

Visited the brewpub in La Jolla north of the city. Loved the atmosphere. Food was great and service (eat at the bar) was even better. The Pale ale was hoppy but not overwhelming as some can be. The Amber Lager was very smooth but watch out as just one can give you a little buzz.

Whenever I get a chance to get to San Diego this is where I go to eat. Nobody here in the Bay Area matches Karl Strauss for beer selection and quality and prices. If you make it to San Diego and you only can make it to one brewpub, this is THE one.

My old friend and I were lucky enough to do a beer jaunt in San Diego during the first week of December. We finally wound up at the Columbia St. location of the Karl Strauss chain. The Columbia St. facility was in the northwest part of downtown in a less traveled district than the Gaslamp. Some of the 10 or so beers available were brewed on premise; the house standards are centrally produced at a decent sized facility visible on the right from I-5 north. The original microbrew enteprenure, Karl Strauss now stares out from cash register video screens at patrons throughout San Diego. My bartender assured me that, at 85, Mr. Strauss actually keeps as good an eye on operations as he virtually does. The highlight for me was the Golden Bock. This was a wonderful beer, full of character and very well balanced. It was light in color for a bock, very flavorful but not a load. It was as good a bock style as I have ever had. The lager was also extremely nice and had a structure similar to the bock. It was incredibly drinkable and would make as good an outdoor summer afternoon keg as any beer you might find. Unfortunately, the advertised “best pilsner you ever had” turned out to be not that. Indeed, turned out to be some distance away from the best pilsners around which I have found in the Mid Atlantic area.

I tried the sampler and added a couple of others. Found all beer to be above average with no bad aftertaste in any. The Oatmeal Stout was the only disappointment. It was more like a watered down porter. Not as dark as a good porter. The waiter said that the beer was made to appeal to a larger client and not to the beer expert.

Nice place. Twelve beers on tap when I was there. I tried five. While the "hoppy birthday" was not at all hoppy, the pale ale more than made up for it. The brown was also very nice. The blonde, however, might as well have been the King (of Beers).

Excellent pale ale, rye beer, and dark lager (light body, mildly "toasty" flavor). Menu fairly ordinary for a brewpub, and the food arrived lukewarm. Good atmosphere without smoke or loud music.

For my money, still the best brewpub in a very crowded San Diego market. Quality of the beer is uniformly good, often excellent. Food is well above average for a brewpub, especially the black bean chili and onion rings. Service is generally lame, and during crowded lunch periods you may need to light a flare to attract attention. An attractive establishment in the downtown area. Parking can be a challenge.

What a nice brew pub. It definitely has the look of a fine brewing establishment. Samplers are available. However, be prepared. I was presented with Nine four ounce servings of all the house beers, and it took all my powers as a beer geek to get throught them. If you are going to sample, eat light. The beer is not only tasty, but filling. The bartender was even nice enough to provide me with a glass of water. Speaking of water, the city of San Digo should really do something about the taste of their water. Not a bad beer in the samplerI found the new Pale Ale to be my favorite, although it was a little shy on hops.
