Time flies when you are having fun and Drake's is having fun. Now that they've opened their "Barrel House" shopping at Wal-Mart has become a lot more fun. One stop does it all. Couple dozen taps to taste from. From growlers and bombers to sixers and kegs. And they've really expanded their hours. Still BYOFood but that's not a problem. Walked out with a bomber each of the Black Robusto porter and the Imp.IPA,Denogginizer. The IPA lasted me most of the 49er-Falcon game. Great stuff on both counts. Go '9er! Go to Drake's!...Hopocalypse DIPA and TIPA coming out soon. Time to go shopping.

This is what beer drinking's all about, sitting in a parking lot behind a Wal-Mart sucking down a few pints of great beer with friends and/or total strangers. For $8 you get a souvenier glass and four tokens for pints of your choice. I tried the Halo Xtra Pale(8.3%),Amber(5.7%),Blonde(4.2%) and the Red(6%).All were outstanding. They even have a BBQ going that's set up by donations and contributions to the cause. Nice touch. Every silver lining has a cloud though. Drakes is there's only a three hour window of opportunity on a Friday afternoon. And having to make a forty mile drive up I-880 from San Jose was no treat. But the beer is so good and the atmosphere so cool it almost makes me want to move to the East Bay. ALMOST!!!

This is a micro-brewery that has an open-house every Friday afternoon, which draws a bunch of beer lovers hanging out outside and in the brewery warehouse. The beer is very good and hearty, and it is worth stopping by the unmarked blue building behind the Walmart. They usually have about 4 beers on tap. Drake's Blonde Ale which tastes like a pilsner. Drakes Amber Ale which is a solid, tasty California amber. Their flagship is the award-winning Drakes IPA, which has loads of flavor and alcohol. If you are lucky they will have their Expedition Ale, which is a dark, full-bodied IPA. They have a few other seasonals and a hefe-weizen.
