Very nice variety, wish this place was in Central Jersey. Love the Lab Dog theme and the very relaxed atmosphere. We sat outside which could have used a bit of fixin up, a bit hard to find, but worth the walk, we didn't even want to think about driving on this Beer Tour including the Or. Beer Fest down at the park in July, so choice........

Really good beer, good food, slow slow slow service. Employees look and act like they'd rather be anywhere else. 50 minutes to get a couple of sandwiches? Please.

Came here for the first time with my wife and a friend yesterday. We had heard a lot of good things about the Lab, and decided to check it out.
The beer is very good. I had a pint of Hawthorne's Best Bitter, and my wife had the Organic Golden Ale. Our friend was the designated driver, so he had a diet Pepsi.
We ordered a sandwich each, and some chips and salsa. The guy who took our order looked and acted totally bored and uninterested. He poured our beer and soda, and gave us a number to place on our table.
Then we waited. And waited. And waited some more. There was a group in the private room, and there were several patrons, but also lots of empty tables. After about 35-40 minutes, we noticed that people who had ordered after us were being served. So I asked the waitress if our order had been forgotten, but she said that since the place was "packed", 40 minutes was not unreasonable. She said she'd check on our order. 10 minutes went by and no sign of her, so I went up to the counter and asked for a refund. The guy went back to check on our order, and I was told that it was in the process of being prepared. It came a few minutes later. The food was very good, but the service was pretty awful.
I'm willing to assume that this was a fluke, and will try them one more time. But it was a disappointing experience.

Interesting location, has the looks of an old warehouse, barn, workshop? Comfortable location with indoor and outdoor seating, counter service for some good food and your beer. while there I sampled Crystal Wheat, Bike Route Rye, Super Dog IPA, Crazy Ludwig, Blue Dog, Rose City. The IPA had a fruity flavor and great aroma, and the Rose City was very creamy. Very friendly people. I will return. Good news for tours Bridgeport Brewing is not far.

This is the place we should have had dinner at. Unfortunately, we didn't realize we were right in the vicinity. We blundered across Lucky Lab after dinner - trying to walk off a couple of pints imbibed elsewhere. Their selection was outstanding, and didn't seem to be out of anything. They had everything from barleywines to IPAs to rye, wheats, etc. The Superdog IPA was excellent, but apparently they occasionally offer a "Super Duper Dog" IPA that's even more potent. The sample of barleywine was entirely too smooth, and could snare the unaware into trouble very quickly. The food looked considerably better than Roots, and there was plenty of room to spread out. The bar server was very accommodating with samples, and I really regret we didn't stop here first...problem with visiting Portland for the first time. (My companion still thought I enjoyed too much microbrew - although I still had sufficient margin to drive unimpaired. Next time she rents the car!)

Love the Lab. Great beer, well awesome beer and I sure love pizza too. Chilled atmosphere, I agree with the warehouse feel. Feels really spacious and confortable, really cheerful people working too. Reccomend it to anyone, along with Rogue Ales too.

They let you bring you dog(s) but you do have to sit outside in back. Beers were great, really liked the IPA. The food selection is very limited; they have sandwiches and the occasional soup or chili. The food was very good, but this isn't the place if you like full meals with your beer. Also if you brew your own, or care to see it, they keep the brew book behind the bar.

Went to 13 brewpubs/breweries in one week 4/29-5/6, so I cannot write too much for each one, but "Beervanna" is the appropriate name for Portland. Every BP, beerbar we went to was top notch and friendly with great to awesome beers and service with few exception- the ones filled with smoke. But overall, compared to east coast, Portland is THE place for real beer lovers to spend at least a week. And we only did 2 McMenamins. Fly to Portland, grab an offcial beer map, hop on public transit (every BP was on a bus/tram/train line or a short walk) and have a beer blast!

Warehouse atmosphere. Good beer. The stout is excellent. One of the better places along with the bridgeport brewery and rogue ale house. If you enjoy trying different beers, go to the concordia ale house.

My wife and I visited the Lucky Lab during a trip to Portland in the fall of 2004. It has become our benchmark for what Ray Oldenburg referred to as "third places". Outside of home or work this is the place to be. A good cross section of clientele with a relaxed atmosphere. The perfect place to meet after work! Highly recommended.

Great place to have a good beer. I had the black lab stout which was excellent. The place is like a big warehouse. Tied for my second favorite place with bridgeport with the rogue ale house being the best out of the five i went to in portland last weekend.

Nice atmosphere. Very casual and unpretentious. Great music vibe. Beer was very good. You have to go to the bar for service, but they're very nice once you get up there. On the other hand you can go in thwere and do your own thing and no one bothers you. If I lived in Portland I'd be stoping here on a regular basis.

Although their beer didn't make me want to stand up and yell, this place was fun. Indoor and outdoor seating. The Black Lab Stout was probably my favorite beer. It was pretty heavy--which I like but I'm sure it will come off tap soon as most won't want to drink it in the summer. The Cask Nitro Dog Day IPA really didn't tast much like an IPA--it really wasn't bitter at all. The food was very good and the staff was very friendly. To an easterner, the view and friendly attitude of the employees made it a good time!

On my first trip to Portland from Albq. NM, (and having 2 Labs) I had to visit and was very impressed. Had been to a few other brewpubs that day and the Lucky Lab had the best beer. Their Irish was very smooth and the Stout had a nice balance. Plus, I got to pet a few Labs and wished my boys were there. I'm definitely going back.

Amazing this place hasn't caught on more. A smaller number of brews but very well done at that, and an almost equal number of guest taps from some of the more obscure breweries in the state. Very large place, which makes it easy to get a seat, as I was worried with the large ratio of Subaru's parked outside it might be packed. Also came here with a group ranging from 22-25 in age all were asked for ID's all brought them expecting they might be asked no problems, thats how it works in Oregon, sometimes u get asked sometimes u don't has never been a problem. Check this place out.

Always a joy to walk over to the Lucky Lab. It's a self-service place with simple food and good beer in an old building. Nice to see everyplace doesn't need to have a menu designed to make everyone spend $20 on lunch. Plus, if I had a dog and lived in Portland, I'd walk him there everyday! I'd love to see more brewpubs with the simplicity of Lucky Lab.

Hold on, don't take this review as an insult, but a just an honest review. Beer? satisfactory. No boldness either in hop or malt content. Big glasses of average ale. Better by far than the ale I drink in England however. The thin menu is fine (I don't eat their food) but the most monumental drawback at the Lucky Lab is the cold and distant service people. And that, my fellow beer nutz, is the god honest truth. I understand that some of us have a bad day, but a bad decade? No problem though, as I'm not in need of befrending my over educated angry waitress, I'm just looking for a beer. Oh.... did I mention the hollow vibe?

The atmosphere is very cool and laid back. They have a beer garden in the back where you can bring your dogs. This plce is super friendly and is a lot of fun. The beer is very average. None of the beers stand out at all. There are better places to get good beer but it is worth a visit just for the atmosphere.

Having lived in Portland for 4 years (mid eighties), it is nice to find such a great lil' ole brewpub in town.
Great beer, friendly staff, yummy food, and the dog-friendly beer garden just can't be beat.
As a fellow professional brewer, I've got to give Alex (The guy in the brewer's uniform there) a big thumbs up! My wife and I wouldn't dream of missing the Lucky Lab when we're in town.

This was one of many brewpubs I visited while in Oregon. The beers were very good. I enjoyed talking and touring with the assistant brewer. He took time away from his work, and gave me and two other people a tour. It was very informative. I enjoyed this place! If you have a dog, they are welcome too!

so, no-name from Portland, are you the owner or the owner's dad or just one of the workers there?
the point is, my 'little friend', as you refer (in 1/2 @ss attempt at disparagement) to her, had already been served.
for the next reviewer who thinks our disappointment was unwarranted, please have the nuts to post your email- or just refer to my email- so this subject no longer runs through the posts.

My husband and I visit the Lucky Lab about once a week. We've always been pleased with the beer, the service and the atmosphere. And you meet the best dogs here. Try the Bitter or Stumptown Porter. (I'm not sure why the gentleman from CT was so incensed about the ID check for his little friend. Any 22 year old should expect an ID check, even if her companion happens to be 42. Them's the breaks, fella.)

On a trip up to our lake cabin in WA, we decided to do a microbrew tour of Portland. We of course had our two balck labs along with us, so the breweries we could visit were limited. This place was the best on our stop by far. It had great beer for my husband and I and lots of water for two thirsty pooches. This place went out of their way for two dogs (Brandi and Stoli)who were quite appreciative after traveling all over Portland. I would definatley recommend this great brewpub, the best we visited in Portland for beer and service. My dogs even got their picture taken in front of the sign.

Unlike Peter dV below, found the bartenders very friendly, but of course being 40, I look like I'm over 21. I think his experience was very unfortunate, but I have a hard time criticizing any establishment for not serving someone unable to show ID. Anyway, our Saturday afternoon out back was nice and quiet, and the beers--an IPA from the cask, and a stout, quite good. Met some nice dogs. (Here or at Bridgeport look for Tasha--she's a sweetie.) If you're staying in downtown Portland, LL is a little harder to visit than the other BP's, but definitely worth a stop.

Here's a little story for ya: My girlfriend and I drove a total of 15,000 miles one trip last year and visited dozens of breweries, brewpubs, and beer bars. The ONLY place that had an a-hole beertender was here. In Sept. 1998, we had dropped our truck off for brake repairs, and, armed w/ our handy Oregon Microbrewers location map, trekked on foot for a 1/2 hour to check out a brewery, which was closed. We walked back to the truck, and took another 30 minute walk to the Lab. We were as dry as the desert, and ordered up 2 pints, and went outside to the picnic tables to quaff our refreshment. Ready for round 2, we went back inside to choose our next brew. Unfortunately, the friendly female bartender had been replaced by a young guy, who requested ID from my girlfriend. She reached into her pocket, but realized she had left her wallet in the truck! The punk beer boy wouldn't budge. "I will not risk this establishment losing its license!", he emphatically announced. We said, hey, the ID's in the truck, we've been walking for an hour, she's 22, and she was just served 15 minutes ago! Couldn't break through that cement head of his. It ruined our visit, obviously. It was the only time, in 3 months and over 15,000 miles, that we had ANY altercation w/ anyone! This place is cool??

This is an interesting place. The beer quality could certainly be better-the bartender thought the stout I served may have been from a bad batch-very watered down, lacking depth. However, the environment is really cool-pictures of people's dogs all over the walls. The place was full of college and graduate student age people-guess Portland State and Portland Community College (actual schools) aren't that tough. Great service . The bitter ale was pretty good.A good place to pick up a cool t-shirt-you can see them directly on their web site-Advantage of this place is it's friendly, cozy, and a true microbrewery which is not too commercialized like Rogue. hungry like Rogue. Great place.

Why is this place so enjoyable? Must be the atmosphere. Unlike many brewpubs whose idea of outdoor seating is putting two tin end-tables on the sidewalk, Labrador seems designed for the outdoorsy life. We met locals & their dogs, had beer & sandwiches, enjoyed the sun (!) at picnic tables on the spacious covered porch (formerly a loading dock?) The beer is top-notch, but there aren't many choices (only 5 when I visited, but a nice variety). The food was good and reasonably priced, but limited selection. The inside is concrete floors and stained wooden rafters: the opposite of trendy, which might be why it feels so comfortable. They are just relaxing & having fun, and inviting you (and your dog) to join them. Great place.

I only had time for a couple of beers and a quick snack - but it would be worth a second look on the next Pub Crawl!

Apparently, a very popular place with the locals. The food selections are limited (mostly sandwiches, soups, snacks). The beer selection is varied - a little bit of everything. Worth a visit when tooling around Portland.

The dog friendly Portland brewpub. The beers are delightful, my favorite was a robust porter. Very laid back (if dogs hang out there) place to enjoy a beer with friends.

The Konig's Klosch was awesome. Their webpage (www.lucklab.com) was the most informative of the microbreweries that I found. Relaxed atmosphere and not at all crowded. A little out of the way (not within walking dist. of downtown) but well worth the trip.

Do not let the looks of the place scare you away. This is a must for any pubcrawler! The beer is great! I am not a stout drinker but this stout tickled my taste buds.

A comfortable old warehouse bar with great brews. Paws down the best beer in Portland.

I had a good lunch here and a taster. Went back for the porter. A 'picnic' atmosphere? The only way I know I got service is because I didn't pour my own beer.

Typical Portland scene. The service is almost always grumpy, but they never screw up an order. The IPA is a bit strong, the Red is better. The Curry Bento is to die for.

A great place to stop while passing. Looks like the kind of place that can get rocking, yet also mellow at times. Go Dogs!

A fun brewpub to visit, especially if you enjoy fine porters, stouts, and labrador dogs. Located in a cavernous industrial building decorated with many polaroids of labradors apparently brought in by customers. Best brewpub T-shirt I have seen anywhere. The place is loud at times, the furniture is mismatched and looks like college leftovers, but this is always a fun stop.
