One notices that the reviews have really tapered off - and almost a full year elapsed between the last two. Maybe that's not a accident. After striking out at Maloney's, we walked here. From a quick glance on an early Saturday evening it was basically dead. Looked like your basic small town pool hall, with a bar thrown in as an afterthought. Nothing to entice folks in like decent music or some customers. While U of Arizona was on spring break, we saw plenty of other activity in that area; the total lack of patrons seemed extreme.

The Shanty is a beautiful bar with a fabulous patio (with fountain and plants) and an out-of-this-world beer selection; the beer list is organized by country of origin. Service is generally good-to-great (friendly & attentive), with the odd exception. I also found it to be a good place for striking up interesting random conversations. Note that Tucson, but especially the Shanty, is hyper-diligent about checking IDs.

The Shanty is one of those very special places neighborhood bars where you are always welcome and feel very comfortable. The owner's attention to detail (check out the bathrooms!) and the atmosphere out on the patio make The Shanty a home away from home.

Some minor remodeling was done to improve the things that were deficient before (bathrooms, total indoor space) without ruining the character of the place. It continues to be a comfortable and fun place to hang out with your friends, especially on the big patio when the weather is good. Oh yeah, and the scenery is the best (college girl hangout).

This is a great beer bar. They don't have much on tap, but have an incredible bottle selection. They specialize in imports--including some fine Belgians. The owner/bartender was extremely friendly and hospitable--actually giving us free t-shirts. Also when he realized that they were out of a beer he had recommended, he bought me a different one. (And we're talking about a high-quality Belgian triple--not some cheap macro.) Inside or out, great atmosphere and well worth a stop.

There's just something about this place... It has the atmosphere of an old bar, the kind you see in a movie from the '50s or early '60s. They use small copper-topped tables and captains chairs. I kept looking around for a Schaefer or Schmidt's of Phila. neon sign. For this Pennsylvanian, it was like going to a social club, except that I didn't have to use my key or the sign-in sheet. It's what you'd expect in "beer bar!"
