I too was introduced to Schlotz many years ago... First entered the establishment in 1972 and one of my UT professors used to have our class meet there periodically. The place had and has a soul, a spirit, a personality! It's good to be back in Austin and have the pleasure of finding the old hangouts again. sm

I am perturbed by the fact that the comments about Scholtz are few and shallow. They reflect a sparse and flat nature of the observers. My first visit to Scholtz was about 32 years ago when I was a vagrant hippie. The place was just magic. About 5 years later, my family moved to Austin and I took 2 of my brothers there. We were mesmerized by the intense good vibes, and we will never forget that night. A Russian professor from OU was there and told us about legislators that mingle with blue collar, white collar, paisley collar, dog collar people. He told us our names in Russian. (Mine is Michelob) He told us that he came to our table to visit us because we had “Migelschmeldt” or something like that. The word, he explained, means a high spirit of good nature which conquers all things. This remains to be true about myself and my 2 brothers. One of them is now the manager of Scholtz, and the other manages the company that manages Scholtz.
Scholtz Bier Garten is the oldest continually operating business in Texas. The “waste” staff, and the beer, and the food and the attitude you have when you come in are all irrelevant. This place has Grace and Soul, and contains the true spirit of Texas. When you go to Scholtz, you are among magic, legacy, history, spirit and pure magic. It is not just a place where you go to get laid or have a drink. It is “Migelschmeldt” (or whatever).

They have lots of different German beers. I think they had bottled Diebels, which was pretty cool. The decor inside really adds to the atmosphere. The wait-staff are total crap though. Have been to Scholz three times (third time was the last) and the waste staff was progressively unresponsive and slow each time. Skip this place and head to Posse East on the other side of campus.

It's the place to be during football season on game day. Plenty of people to watch and hand food booths. Beer selection is mostly american lagers (why bother) with Guiness on tap and some german and local craft brews on tap and in the bottle. The good stuff on tap goes fast.
