The Ginger Man offers 68 fine draught beers and more than 120 domestic and imported bottles. Open since 1985, this is the pub that started it all! You been to the rest - now come back to the best.

The G-man is the best place for beer near Rice (SRC'00) and one of the best in Houston.

My experience is with the Ginger Man in NYC. However, the Ginger Man in Houston is a nice little destination. Not quite the same atmosphere as Manhattan, but still a great selection of draught and bottled brews. Sitting at the bar, the service struck me as busy and efficient - that is, not friendly and welcoming but not rude or testy. More to the order of, I have a lot of people to take care of, know what you want or I'll be back. There is no kitchen although they do have a handful of snax. Nice neighborhood in Houston - one that you can actually walk around in as opposed to the car mandate that the rest of the city seems to suffer from.

This is my favorite bar in Houston. Probably anywhere. It's much intelligent than the Flying Saucer, and by that I mean, it's not as trendy. By that I mean it's better. I've never had a testy waitress, like some of these people, but for that matter I've never paid much attention. Beer's too good.

Good selection of Belgian beers in a cozy, pub environment. If youre looking for a wider selection though, hit up Flying Saucer downtown.

I have been going to the Ginger Man for years and keep going back. The selection of beer is outstanding and I love sitting outside. As for the help, well that is another matter. Even if you get to know them, they are still grouchy and rude. I think if they smiled, the world would stop spinning on it's axis.

This is good place to try many types of beer. The service is up/down. One night the barmaid is friendly, the next they are total asses. Get some good help and this place would really be a bigger hit than it is. Refinish the surface of the bar....really trashy looking. You only get one chance to make a first impression! Be sure you specify no lemon in your wheat beer.

Just in case you did not know...MOST establishments put lemon in the heffeweisens...if you don't like it, then say so BEFORE they serve the beer.

Cool hangout, tasty brews to choice from. I'll visit again when I am "H-town" but the battleaxe barmaids need to take some major chill pills though. Lighten up, life is too short to be dissin' your customers all the time.

This pub was recommended to me by some friends who immigrated to the US from my homeland. After visiting, as a black man, I would avoid at all costs as service was contemptible.

Tried to return a beer that had gone off and bartenders were extremely rude and discourteous. They told me they could not replace the beer and I would have to pay for another. I have been going to this pub for more than a decade and was amazed at total lack of professionalism by these two female bartenders and their caustic attitudes and remarks. I hope this is an isolated incident, but it is something I will not forget for quite a while.

The G-Man is an institution. It keeps the quality of beer, ambience, customers at the same level since I have found it in 1995. The bartenders and waiters are always laid-back and friendly. Advice: be prepared to speak many languages.....I love it so much.

On our tour of the 5 Ginger Man pubs (NY, Connecticut, Dallas Austin & Houston) last week, this was the last boozer we visited in Texas before flying back England, superb beer, great pub, in a buzzing area of the city, another splendid establishment.

First visit was in'91 - I had a fraternity brother that lived RIGHT BEHIND the place and we crawled thru a hole in the fence. Great beer, great staff, great selection. The staff knows beer and can make a good suggestion if you're at a loss for a choice. Not plush by any means, but the beer is fresh and the crowd friendly. Worth looking for? You bet.

I love the Ginger Man. My friends and I come here pretty often, and the bartenders know us, the bouncers know us, and they're always very friendly. The building itself is very cool--it's dark wood, and it feels very cozy and relaxed. Don't come here if you're looking for a meat market; it's much better as a chill place to enjoy beer, meet the random drunken patron, and just hang out with friends over a multitude of fun beers!

Their selection of various imports and domestic regionals/micros are better than most beer bars in the Houston area; however, this could be a nice place to sample beer....if you do not mind drinking with arrogant -elitists-, gold diggers, or stuck up Rice students.

I found the staff very friendly (cheers to Patty and Lindsey). A relaxed atmosphere where it's easy to get talking, good beer, staff that actually know enough about the beer to help with selection. You can get up to three samplers to help you choose. This will be my first port of call next time I'm in Houston. Go try it!

One of the interesting things about enjoying a pint at the bar at a place like the Ginger Man is seeing what other people order when they come up to the bar. On my most recent visit to the Ginger Man, I was totally dismayed at three fellows who approached the bar and ordered two Bud Lights and a Miller Light. If that is their choice, why come to this place?! My faith was restored, however, when the next fellow who came up to the bar ordered two pints of Saint Arnold's Cask Conditioned Amber Ale for he and his friend.

Rude bartenders can make even the incredible selection intolerable. Would it hurt to hire bartenders that didn't treat patrons like they were doing them a favor by pouring a beer? Too bad, the folks that work in the G-man in New York are MUCH friendlier!!

there is a reason why it is called the Gingerman and not the Gingerwoman - it's a swordfight on most nights (bartenders are always attractive women), but the selection of beer is worth it. There are far better places for ambiance, conversation - well, just about anything - but you would be hard pressed to find a better beer selection or a place that feels like an authentic pub.

The G-Man is one of the better beer establishments in Houston, save for the occasional over-abundance of nazi fratboys. The beer is well kept (particularly the Abbott Ale), and the service is downright pleasant. A must-visit establishment for serious beer drinkers and people watchers alike.

I loved the outside seating area. Unfortunately I found little to like once I stepped inside. The place appeared grundgy in the light of day, so you best go at nite. Begrudgingly is the best way to describe the service, and I imagine you have to be a regular to get two words and a smile from the waitstaff. By the time they overpoured dumped and overpoured my hefe weisen it was nearly flat and to add insult to injury they insisted on excreting a lemon slice in my brew without my consent (like finding a turd in your punch). I find this affectation offensive in a so-called beer drinkers pub. Keep the lemon and lime for the Corona, not real beer, or at least ask first. All that said, their beer selection is first rate, and the customers are friendly. The waitstaff persons need to lose the attitude.

Travelors who visit Houston and not experience the Gingerman .... It's the only place you can feel like a native, but don't have to wear a tall hat. The St. Arnold Amber Ale cask conditioned is to die for.

My favorite bar in Houston. They have a great selection and very comfortable ambiance. And you have to drink the St. Arnold Amber Ale cask conditioned. It is served using a beer engine. Very authentic real ale. I believe this is the only place in Houston where you can find this beer.

As you can see by my ratings, I really like this place. When looking for it, don't blink or you will miss it. It is that small. Gingerman has the look and the feel of a fraternity house (for a rather poorly-funded fraternity). You feel at home inside (or out on the back patio). The beer selection is unbelievable. They even have a "menu" which defines different styles (of beer) and then categorizes them by style and place of origin. This is not necessary if you know what you want, of course. But with their huge selection, you are bound to find a new favourite if you take the plunge and try what they have to offer. Go see this PLACE!!!

The only problem with this bar is that you can never get up to the bar to get another round because it is always so packed. They have beer tastings the 3rd Monday of the month. 15 bucks gets you 10 four ounce samplers, a host to describe the beers, a platter of fruit, cheese and bread, and sometimes free pint glasses, bar towels or bottle openers. The beer garden out back can get a little cold in the winter and the front porch / yard is a wonderful place to do some people watching. They have 2 claustrophobic dart boards and a great juke box. Beware of yuppies though, the Rice area is full of them.
