Rich Os Public House& Now this is what a brewpub should be. A highly uniquely decorated small pub with various rooms and corridors filled to the brim with young patrons, seasoned veterans and everyone in-between.
Besides the two tiny bars, there are couches, leather chairs, coffee tables, and other randomly accumulated furniture to sit at and have a beer, appetizer or food. There are also tables and chairs, but few (if any) are the same. Its a dark, smoky pub that just screams authenticity.
Now on the other side of the wall is Sports Time Pizza, which is much more family friendly. Its cavernous, with a good mix of booths and counter-style tables. Kids are welcome, there are a few plasma televisions for the sports game, and theres a decently sized bar. And lets not forget about the GIANT chalk board with the beer list, even though they can only fit about a quarter of their massive selection on it.
The food is pizza, pizza, and more pizza! There are other things on the menu, but I dont know why anybody would even bother. The traditional crust (which I had) was simply delicious, and possibly the best pizza Ive ever had. You can get up to 10 toppings, which somehow costs the same as 5. But they also have deep dish, and these are works of art. They truly look like pies with the crust, perfectly baked to a golden brown, sticking several inches above the thickly piled toppings, cheese and sauce. They also have upside-down deep dish, which I didnt see, but it sounds pretty interesting.
Their own brews were the one weak point of this establishment. They typically have four of their own always on tap with a constantly rotating seasonal. The Old-15 B Porter was a decent choice with a complex malty taste and mild hops. The community dark was rather bland, mainly because its a dark ESB (which Ive never heard of) meant to appeal to the masses. Their Elector and Croupier are very hopped, and would please any hophead, which I, however, am not. And they didnt even have their famous Hoptimus, which probably has a hoppiness off the charts. Their seasonal at the time was the Elsa Von Horizon Imperial Pilsner, and this was my favorite. Delicately hopped, slightly sweet, and very complex for a pilsner. My only complaint was the lack of a description for each of the beers on a handy menu, although maybe I just didnt see it.
The service was very prompt and kindly, they never let my beer go dry, and kept me happy even though I was by myself passing through town on a busy night.

I just wanted to post about the pizza. Richos pizza is the best around-I'm not sure what kind you ordered to think it tasted like sugar, but thats a bit strange for this pub. I've ate there often and the pizza is better than any I've had-and I've visited Italy for theirs. If you give it another try and still don't like the pizza, try breadsticks and beer cheese. The beer cheese is also infamous. Thanks!

Rich O's kicks ass. Every time I plan a trip north I dream about visiting Rich O's. I was there a few weeks ago for the annual Lupulin Land Fest and was not disappointed. My new favorite beer is NABC's own Oaktimus, which is an oak aged version of Hoptimus. I cannot wait to go back.

They have 200+ brands of beer. If you can't find a beer you like there then you must like old commercial big boy breweries aka AB and Miller. The HOPTIMUS was fantastic. It lived up to its name. The Croupier was also an excellant brew. HOWEVER, being from the pizza capital of the US, The garbage that they called pizza lacked any kind of flavor. No basil, oregano or garlic in the sauce. It tasted like tomato sauce and sugar. The only saving grace was the Italian sausage whick was hot. Maybe the other food is better. I'd go back for the beer only.

I have been to many brewpubs, this place goes in my top 5.This is beer geek heaven. The selection of beer is almost overwhelming. They have about 10 of their own plus maybe 30 guests on tap. Then there are maybe 150-200 bottled selections including 15 lambics and about a dozen vintage beers. The have Lindermann's on tap which allways impresses me. We had pizza which was very good as was the service. But what elevates an establishment in my eyes is the beer drinking atmosphere. This place has it in spades. We met the owner and the joy for craft brewthat she has shows in her place. The next time I visit family in Loisville or are even remotely in the area we will be back.

I visited this brewpub on February 24, 2006 and found that they no longer sell sample rounds of their own brews. Needless to say I was very disappointed. The plus side is that I just happened to arrive for the beginning of their annual Gravity Head Festival. The brewpub brought in more craft brews from around the region than I could shake a stick at. The brews were served in half pint glasses which was a blessing. Putting down more than a couple 9 to 15% ABV pints will send anyone straight to a DWI conviction. I actually would have preferred even smaller samples so that I could try more of them. My companion and I asked for extra glasses for each brew so we could share and therefore try more of their offerings. There was not a brew in the set that didn't received my highest marks. We of course started our tasting with one of their pizzas, which was good, but I have had better. No one was smoking while we were there, but our clothes did reek after we got back to the hotel. I managed to again pick up the six regional brewspapers offered to their clients. Now that is what I can hospitality. If I can make it back in town for next year's Gravity Head, you can bet I will be there.

I totally agree with the writer before. Everything but the "smoke from cigarettes" is wonderful at Rich O's. The beer selections and the Pizza are the best available in the Fall's Cities area.

Beer and food well worth the stop. The stench of smoke does take some of the pleasure away though. If smoke bothers you, stay away. Other wise it is a gem in the rough.

This place is hard to describe--strip mall meets clubhouse meets pub meets Eugene Debs. Four of their own beers on tap; good but not outstanding. Community dark is a mild for the long haul whiole Bush Hog was a hoppy and refreshing ale that I enjoyed. There a several other tap selections and many bottles as well. Defintitely a good place if you want a well-rounded beer experience. Tried Mostreech Aajit, king of a Rodenbach Red clone from Holland. A little more sour tha Rodenbach, with a cherry/plum nose; good but not great. Server almost went out of his way to not interact with customers. Perhaps he thought I was related to the czar?

From Arrogant Bastard to Sierra Pale Ale they have bunches of good American beers in this pub. Also they make their own. From a solid hoppy IPA to a nice non-hoppy dark ale with clean finish / hi octane. The food was good too, I had the Greek Lasagna. Small sign, no advertising, and a full house.

My wife and I discovered this place when we had to come to New Albany my grandmother's funeral. It was the highlight (well, duuuh) of an otherwise sad trip. However, New Albany and Louisville have now become a place where we can honestly say we want to visit more often. We make it a point to take the 5 hour trip at least a few times a year JUST to come to Rich O's. The beer is incredible. The people who work here are great as well. We got a personal tour of New Albanian, and even got the FIRST taste of Bourbon Daddy beer - that was quite an honor. My wife can't stop talking about how much she loves Elector beer, and the food? OMG! I am a Pizza Snob, having had pizza from all over the world. I used to work for years in a pizza restaurant, and my wife is quite the gourmand. We can both honestly say that you will never, NEVER find a better pizza anywhere in the world.

I agree with the other reviews in that the beer is OUSTANDING, especially if you have the chance to try the Bourbon Daddy. Pizza is really good and so is the breadsticks with beer cheese. The place is usually pretty smokey but fight through the smoke and you will be rewarded!

Hidden in a small suburban strip mall just across the river from downtown Louisville, KY, rests one of America's most obscure treasures: Rich O's Public House. A smallish neighborhood pub, one would not suspect upon entering that he has stumbled upon the veritable Ripley's Believe It or Not of Beer! The world's most eclectic beer menu is constantly changing to offer strange and fascinating brews from around the globe. All world-class, all hand-picked by proprietor and resident beer deity Roger A. Baylor. The New Alabanian Brewing Company shares the building and offers its own very passable house recipes, but the true heart of Rich O's is its unequalled smorgasboard of domestic and imported ales, lagers, barleywines, meads, and countless other assorted oddities. The Gravity Head Festival, which features herculean strong beers, has become an annual rite-of-passage for devotees of the genre. The inaugural Saturnalia Winter Beer Pagan Festival, with a plethora of rare seasonal treats, kicks off on Friday, December 17th, and promises to rival Gravity Head's popularity. The Saturnalia line-up can be viewed on the brewpub's excellent website at www.richos.com. The food is good (and wildly necessary to offset the natural effects of the beverages). The service is largely hit-or-miss, paticularly when busy, and sometimes reflects the haughty "beer snob" attitude in which Rich O's revels. Thankfully, the beers themselves are the real stars here and well worth the occasional delay in sampling your next choice. The highest compliment I can give this ultimate hophead shrine is that I live six hours from Louisville and still make it a point to carve out a weekend two or three times a year just to visit Rich O's. Cheers!!

I visited this brewpub on 11/24/04 and had the following; Bush Hog, Beaks Best ESB, Elector, Tunnel Vision, and Community Dark. The watier delivered the wrong pizza to our table and then delivered it to the correct table as soon as we handed it to him. It is a good thing I am not mischevious enough to tamper with the misdelivered food. The locals seem to love this place as it was packed. The best thing about this place was that it had 6 different regional brewspapers available. I try not to travel without my "Brewing News".

The staff here actually has knowledge and appreciation and enthusiasm...how refreshing. This place is a brew lover's dream. It was kind of hard to locate (maybe because it was our 4th brewpub on our Brewpub Roadtrip that day?) (just kidding folks we had a designated driver) maybe a bigger sign would help. Easily the best of our recent brewpub finds. Brews, food, service, atmosphere was all exceptional, even entertainment was included when some idiot wandered in and sat next to me at the bar and proceded to carry on a loud, one-sided conversation about how much different this beer was than his usual Bud lite.

The selection of both tapped and bottled beers is fantastic. Many beers regularly available on tap at Rich O's are not available on tap anywhere else in the region. The Pizzas and sanwhiches are very good, and the knowledgeable staff always makes you feel welcome. Oh, did I mention that they brew a variety of their own beers, too? For me, all of their own brews rate at least a 7 on scale of 1 to 10, and some are in the 9-10 range. Good job.

Richo's/Sports Time/New Albanian has been a great establishment for many years to partake in many of the best beers in the world. They have always strived to go the extra distance to bring in the beers no one else can get. Now they have expanded and added a Brewery with a selection that is fantastic. Far in a way the widest variety of brews brewed at any pub locally. The atmosphere in totally unique and a beer enthusiasts dream. I can not speak for the entire staff because I have not met them all but I have nothing but wonderful times everytime I have been there. They are for sure per capa the most beer knowledgable staff in the metro area. Once a year they have a Gravity Fest that is a must for any STRONG BEER lover. This year I looked at the beer menu and I almost began to weep I was so impressed. FYI plan ahead you will not want to drive home from this place!!! IMHO

I must say that I agree with the majority of the reviewers that the beer at Richo's is awesome; however, I believe that these people are referring to the wide selection of fresh beer from inside and outside of the U.S. - and, yes, the lack of macro-swill. It is true that no bar in the Louisville area comes close to Richo's as a beer bar.

I was fortunate enough to visit Rich O's the other night. I had a bottle of Merlin's Ale and a Skullsplitter, both very fine (I enjoyed the Skullsplitter more). My girlfriend asked for a Blue Moon and while they didn't have that, she was offered something that was very close and was pleased with her brew as well. So, why do I rate the service lousy? Well, we ordered a pizza at 7:10 and at 8:23 the server came buy and asked if we'd gotten our pizza yet..."no"...so they went off to look for it. One of our party made a joke "they probably gave it to someone else". I figured they'd just go make another pizza. Well, my girlfriend's sharp eyes caught the server at another table opening a pizza box, taking it off their table and disappearing into the kitchen. Within seconds, he was bringing our pizza to us on a platter. So my girlfriend said "I just saw you take that pizza off that other table." The server said "It was in a box." As if that would make a difference. We declined to take it and said we would like a new pizza...we heard the server angrily toss the pizza and platter onto a table in the kitchen after he left our table.
Was it not enough that we had waited over an hour for a pizza that had been delivered to another table, but we had to be subjected to a rude server who lacked the common decency to get us a WARM pizza?
I'll probably go back to Rich O's because, as has been mentioned in other reviews, the beer selection is amazing. But you can be sure I'll be checking regularly on any food that I order.

I've been going to RichO's regularly for years now. My husband introduced me to them. He's a beer snob and I'd never tried any beer that I liked. My husband said that's because I'd never tasted "real" beer, what they sell at the grocery store is NOT beer. And he was right. There are very few places that I can go that serve the quality of beer that I like, so RichO's definately has a corner on that market. They have a wide selection of beers and now that they're brewing their own, too, there are even more choices. I tend to like the fruitier drinks, so I'm grateful Roger has not dropped the Woodchuck line from the menu yet, as they are 2nd my favorite, next to the Lambics. The beer selections change often and they've added several new apple ciders that I'm in the process of trying out. My husband tends to like the heavier, darker beers, so a place like RichO's allows everyone to be able to have what they like. And I solemnly swear that swill beer never touch my lips again :)
As far as staff behavior and snobbery goes, well, that's just the way it is and they tell you straight up that they don't cater to "the Bud crowd". RichO's tends to be a place for people who have been able to develop their tastes past the mundane norm of mass society. It's a place to go enjoy the drink, the food, the atmosphere, and your fellow patrons, with class and style all its own. There's no other place like RichO's. I've been to other micropubs that have good beer, but the atmosphere is stale and commericialized. I'm glad Roger made RichO's what it is. Thanks Roger!
