I was at the State College Festival this weekend and heard that Poor Henry's recently closed the restaurant and temporarily ceased brewing.

Please read my review from March 13th, 1998. PH's used to be the best brepub around. Recently, the Ortliebs sold the restaurant portion to a management company and the food and service has gone downhill. In addition, the beer prices have gotten out of hand. I paid $5.50 for a belgian. This place is still worth checking out as they have excellent beer. Thats about all they have now.

Henry may be struggling. I stopped up on a Sunday a month ago and they were closed. Joe 6 indicates hours may be irregular. Call ahead to confirm availability.

Went for dinner with a friend. Food was very good for both of us. The beers where very good to. Dock St Amber was the best for me, and Poor Henrys Scotch Ale was my friends favorite. Also make a pretty good Barley Wine. The only draw back about this place was the price for the beers, but over $5 for a pint of beer at your own place is to me pretty steep. www5.50megs.com/danjohnbeer

Truly excellent beer. What happened to all the good food? Did they fire the Chef? It was a shame they didn't have anything worth eating to go with such good beer.

I don't know why it has taken me so long to rate this place. I have been to many brew pubs and I can say that this is one of thee best. I am an hour away but I seem to get to PH's often. The beer quality is awesome as well as the selection. There are always 10 or more beers on tap at any time and there is always something different. They make a birch beer here that is wonderful. My none drinking buddy loves it(my DD) The food is very good too and the service is also on the money. So if you are looking for a really well made brew come to Poor Henry's. They have a large parking lot just across the street so you won't have to worry about parking.

Excellent place to each, drink and play darts. Located in a quaint, but seedy part of town. My kind of dive.

I haven't been to the brewpub but have had their Dock Street Bohemian Pilsner in bottles and it is excellent. a nice amount of Saaz hops balanced againt a firm malt body. A nice buttery finish. Very smooth. This one is in Michael Jackson's Ultimate Beer in the pilsner category, probably listed before the brand was sold to Ortlieb's. Glad to see it hasn't lost anything.

I was really glad to be able to get to Poor Henry's late in July. I have been wanting to visit them for quite a while. Parking across the street is a piece of cake. The works behind interior windows is very impressive. I went through the whole slate of the Henry's and the Dock Street beers, including a very nice root beer. I thought the Select Lager a little on the wimpy side and the Amber was eminantly forgetable. The Stout was OK but somewhat sweet. They had a Cream Ale, which you don't run into very often, and it was pretty good. The Wheat was alright as well. The Awesome Ale was pretty decent, very much like the bottled version. I really liked the IPA; also a tad sweet but very full bodied and satisfying. I thought the bottled version of the Dock Bohemian had more hop zing but the beautiful malt balance of this beer really showed on draft. The Old Stock Lager is one of my favorite bottled beers and on tap is a wonderful, toothsome brew. This beer, and the IPA, were well worth the trip. We had the potato wedges with chili and a pizza, which was very tasty. Two flights of tasters, several pints, and the food only set us back $25. Hopefully, I'll be able to get back soon!

The food was reasonably priced, but everything we ordered was very oily. I starting to get that feeling of nausea that comes with too much oil. Also, even though the restaurant was rather empty, our waitress was slow with the drinks and food.

The beer selection is outstanding as is the quality. The food, I thought, was fairly bland. Service was slow for dinner, but at the bar, the bartender service was excellent. Man that is good beer!!

Nothing special, however their black cherry stout was much better than the one Red Bell makes.

A great beer selection,a superior tasting brew(Octoberfest), an outstanding lunch (veal Parm),coupled with great service at a reasonable price. This place has to be Philadelphia's best kept secret.Without a doubt the BEST.

The beers were good. My favorite was an E.S.A.- Extra Special Ale which I thought was a great sessions beer! The Octoberfest was also good and drinkable. If you are a hophead like me the I.P.A. was not hoppy at all. The food is very good. I had the Brewmasters Cheesesteak and it was great! The location is at the old Ortlieb's Brewery and it is sad to see the old run down brewery next to the new micro-brewery.

The place is GREAT...... I would recommend all beer lovers to try it! Also, Carolyn, our waitress/bartender, was very helpful.

I'm in it for the beer and that's where I was let down. No infections or flaws, but no real character. Beer flavored water to me. There is better in the Philly metro area I know for a fact.

Service was awesome. It's great that they are preserving the building. Tour was excellent. Management went out of their way to make our party feel welcome. Worth the trip to the north of Vine Street.

Been going since they opened; they need to brew some Hefe-Weisen for this summer heat, but the manager told me they didn't have any plans to brew it!!!!

Food was better than the beer for me, oddly enough. Shrimp-pasta dish ordered just from smell alone from nearby patron; apple tart a la mode was stupendous. Beers were certainly good (on the dry/hoppy side), but not earth-shaking. Was I having a bad day?

Stopped in after a Phillies game and had an extremely enjoyable dinner and beers. Prices were very reasonable. The beers had that tasty malt character that is hard to find. The stout was delivered on nitrogen so it had that dreamy milk-shake quality to it. We'll be back!
