We had a spicy chicken quesadilla and the kids had grilled cheese (kids ate free). We sampled three of the beers and all were pretty good. The double IPA didn’t taste much different than the regular IPA though.

Dropped into the Broken Drum today for the first time. We had an IPA and a Terrifico. We loved them both! The IPA proved to be a complex, but balanced ale while, the Terrifico turned out to be an up-scaled version of your favorite mexican lager. The fellow behind the bar was very eager to talk about the beer and we soon learned he was the assistant brewer. He gave us a tour of their 10bbl system and talked about some of the creative work arounds for brewing in such confined quarters. After sampling some super spicy buffalo wings and discovering their secret weapon, the Whamber, we had decided we'd be back for another Sunday afternoon.

I visited this brewpub on 5/7/08 and had the following beers; Hemp Porter, Whamber 7.2%, IPA 7.2%, Wheat 4.1%, Pale Ale 6.4%, Terrifico 4.2%, Golden Ale and Pokemon 7.4%. Most of the brews were not very interesting. My fellow beer travellers and I could find no evidence of this place being a lesbian bar.

The manager Matt Smallback is a pompous, smug individual who could take a few lessons on how to treat people. i could never go back to this place as long as he manages this place.

definitely a lesbian bar but also a great place to get lousy food, your order messed up, and a warm beer.

I am suprised at the number of good reviews on this place. The place looks like a Denny's diner inside and outside is a semi-enclosed patio that is smoking and not vented. On a friday night you can sit inside and scream at people over the loud live terrible music or sit outside and drown in smoke. The beers not good enough to warrent either.

Broken Drum featured 8 beers on tap to go along with a full bar. Had a pint of Amber to start with which was good. Switched to the Prohibition ale which was a blend of their IPA and Stout. It was really tasty but was running low quantity-wise. Had to ask one barkeep for a menu even though it wasn't very busy. Did order some fish tacos that were piled so high they should be renamed tostados. And the Habanero sauce I got on the side had me sweating. Sure makes the beer go down fast. The next barkeep that took over during the shift change kept practicing his Tom Cruise glass swirling/tossing which was a bit disconcerting since I was too close to the action. Both places in San Rafael, Broken Drum and Rafters, seem to be a bit more local-friendly as though they don't mind taking the tourist money but that's as far as it goes. Neither place will be on this travelers list of places for a return visit.

I was extremely pleased with everything about this place. I had two beers, the IPA was fabulous and true to style (maybe a bit strong but who's complaining), the WHAMBER was a strong ale at 8.2% and a cross between a wheat and amber - it was quite tasty. The food was really good. I will definitely be stopping in the next time I head through (or even near) San Rafael.

Great atmosphere unless you are outside with the kids smoking which is a real turn-off. The brews are very consistant and good. Don't miss this one in San Rafael.

Stopped by on a hot day for lunch with no heavy imbibing planned so not a definitive review here-had a pale ale which was good and crisp and my buddy had a Hefe which was equally drinkable. Will return.

This was only a quick visit. I had a brown ale that was good but not outstanding. The brewing equipment, which seemed small, is located toward the back and above the main restaurant level. It is just a few blocks west of Willow Street Brewery on San Rafael's Fourth Street.

Almost all of their beers are great, with the exception of the new lager "Terifico." They make a GREAT double-wheat called Whamber, their food is very good (it's improved greatly this past year), and the staff is nice.

I've been to worse places, but, then again, I've to a lot more better places than this. Purely pedistrian beers on tap, that, while may taste a little better with the pricey pizza's and such, on their own they were unimpressive....//TSB

This place just opened a week ago and their beer is great! They have a Wheat, Cherry Wheat, Amber, Nut Brown, and a Stout. From other breweries, they also have a cider and lager on tap. My favorites were the Amber and Stout. The place isn't quite finished, and the complete menu wasn't available yet, but this is definitely a place to go back to.
