Go smoke in your own living room then. New ownership which is intolerant of your second-hand smoke. Go find another place to puff your smoke. This place will survive without you :)

thanks for saving the trouble of bothering. i am a pipe smoker and we were going to go in for cigars and/or pipes but now i'd rather go to a bar that's a little more fun instead.
does anyone know of another cigar bar in the immediate area?

Having lived in Syracuse for beyond 10 years, I have almost always been a homebody, preferring to shy away from the crowds than face them.
In the last year, Al's has changed that for me. The place has a welcoming atmosphere, the bartenders and staff not only remember faces... but preferences, details you exchange in their pleasant banter.
The food is always delicious, the drinks creative and appealing, the service - if not always prompt when it's busy - is absolutely always friendly, welcoming and attentive. You can tell they enjoy what they do, and that makes a huge difference.
I will be sad when I move away from the area and have to leave such a good place behind, but I know when I come back I'll be welcomed with smiles and waves.

I stopped in to have a cigar and beer. I asked the Bartender if I could still smoke a cigar here. He said " No, they no longer allow cigar smoking" I then asked him why they changed their policy. " He rolled his eyes and look at me with distain" and said with attidude " Becasue I want to live longer" That did it for me. I walked out and will never return to this Bar ever again. If this is how they treat customers, I don't ever want to be in there again.

Awful Al's has reopened as Al's Whiskey and Wine Lounge. Much the same as it was, with the usual taps and whiskey selection, and Friday happy hour food offering, but with a more extensive selection of wines and small offerings of cheeses, meats, breads, and sweets. Perhaps more importantly, no cigars and no smoking!

Well, I've seen construction going on there but have no idea what the real story is. Ive heard everything from remodeling to the owner had tax problems. If they do reopen under the same ownership, I hope to god they hire some friendlier help! There are a few miserable people working in that place. From the couple guy bartenders who only serve the pretty ladies and leave us men to slurp beer drippings off the bar with our cash held high in hopes of recognition, to the snotty little girl bartenders that crack under the pressure of a full house and feel the need to treat the customers like a leper colony because of it. The drinks: Perfect! Atmosphere: Couldn't be better! The Help: (most of them anyway), pretentious children. Come on guys, she doesn't really believe your in medical school.

Although it has been closed for awhile, it will be re-opening as Al's Wine & Whiskey Lounge under new management. I'm hoping that it stays true to how it's alway been run and that the new owners don't ruin what was a good place. Good atmosphere, some great live bands over the last year or so and a good place to sit and relax with your friends, especially in the back alcove past the pool table. Keeping my fingers crossed!

Best bar in Syracuse, beyond a shadow of a doubt. The staff is courteous, extremely knowledgeable, and move significantly faster than most bartenders. Good beer and a decent selection, but it's really all about the spirits. Also a nice selection of cigars. Their cigar girls actually know what they're talking about, and can make good suggestions based on your tastes. The atmosphere is like nowhere else I've ever been, and the clientelle (unlike a previous poster seems to think) is diverse but largely a down-to-earth group, particularly on the weekdays.

The name says it all: AWFUL. I was so appalled at the rude, egotistical employees there that I will never go back. There are too many other great bars in Syr to waste your time on this dirty, dark, dive with rude employees.

LOVE LOVE LOVE awful Al's. The atmosphere is great here. Just a great place to chill with friends. Beer selection and prices were ok, not bad, nothing great, but the place in general is just lot's of fun and worth a visit.

Al's is a great place to a just relax and chill out with your friends. True it can get a little crowded, but if you get there early enough, a comfortable, roomy leather couch will be your group's spot until you leave. The music they play, whether DJed or just the house stereo system is always a good, downtempo vibe. They have a great selection of wines, liquors and cigars, owing to the true strength of the establishment. I went to SU and miss Al's, and have to date foound nothing like it.

This is an overpriced meat-market dive for shallow and pretentious locals who like to pretend they're in a Manhattan tavern. When you're packed like a sardine in this narrow, stinky bar, it's quite difficult to enjoy your beer. Furthering your misery, you'll have to witness an endless parade of Syracuse art crimes who actually think they're being elegant and fashionable, when really they're just drunk, wearing something black, and have a lot of product in their hair. Yes, narrow ties live on at Awful Al's. The best place in Syracuse to vomit.

Some good beers on tap, but relatively few compared to other local bars (Tusk, Faegan's MacGregor's).

If you need a beer there is plenty to choose from...all on draft no less. Many local beers and IMO the freshest Sierra Nevada Pale Ale in Syracuse. But the beer is only a small part of the equation. This is the best selection of Whiskey, Scotch, Port, Tequila or Wine in Syracuse hands down!! Not to mention the best bar staff in Syracuse to match it (i.e. knowledge, experience and service). If in Armory Square a must go to spot. Oh yeah Sunday nights they always have live Jazz...sweet!

Past reviewers hit it on the head: there is a small but excellent concentration of booze joints around Armoury Square, and Awful Al's is a top-notch part of it. With a HUGE spirits selection and lots of comfy chairs, you don't have to go there just for the 20+ taps of good beer. I shrugged off a cold and rainy day with a heavy shot of Eagle Rare 17 year old bourbon, while my bro-in-law held up the carbonated side with a pint of Prima Pils. Very relaxing place.

Unique atmosphere - comfortable overstuffed leather couches and chairs, as well as large bar area. Cigar friendly with descent selection. Good tap selection, with many fine scotches, whiskies, ports, etc. One of the best happy hour spreads on Friday night. Great place to spend an afternoon sampling beers and scotch with a good cigar!

360 bottles of top-shelf booze, 35 taps & several humidors. One of my favorite bars ever. Lots of old wood & overstuffed furniture. Bartenders are extremely knowledgable & efficient.

It is hard to stand out as a great beer bar in Syracuse's Armory Square, since Al's is just a block from the Empire, the Blue Tusk, and Clark's Ale House. But the selection of taps, the cigar selection, the comfortable living room decor and the outstanding staff make this place a pure delight.
