Oops, that's a different, even sadder story for the brewing community. The Heavyweight story is here:

Another Rock Bottom goes up, another great craft brewer goes down. I just don't get it.

Tom actually has the balls to do what most (green with envy) brewers wish they could do; open a brewery & make world class beers. Heavy Weight, Much success in all your endeavors, & keep making those Awesome brews. You are what I want to be when I grow up.

This place takes beer seriously. Nice variety of styles of beer here, gruit ale, farmhouse ale, altbier, and smoked beer just to name a few. Stop by the brewery or check out an open house if you get the chance, you won't be dissapointed. HEAVYWEIGHT REALLY NEEDS TO BE ON TAP AT ANY HALFWAYS DECENT PUB!

Who woulda thunk it? Great Belgiun-style beers from the middle of New Jersey. The amazing thing is that I know a lot of people that live within 30 miles of the brewery who have never heard of the beer. It's a little biblical isn't it? Y'know? Jesus not being honored in his own hometown? Y'know what I mean? Ah well, I digress.

Perkuno's Hammer was the best beer at the recent microbrew festival at Stoudt's.

This guys beer is awesome! went to a tasting at andy's corner last night. The '02 Old Salty was great, good news; no hangover, the bad news was I think I was still drunk in the AM. Tom was great and really friendly, theres a guy that really cares about his craft.

We (Allen & Kip) would like to sing- no- scream the praises of Tom's line of artisanal beers. This is a brewer with integrety vis a vis making quality, WORLD CLASS brews for the love of it, not the cheap as possible of it. A lot of FAKE micros could learn a thing or 3 from Heavyweight.

Just got back from the GABF. I went two nights out of three and sampled dozens of beers. It wasn't until I went to the Falling Rock Tap House Saturday night, however, that I found the rare beer that makes you obsess over how you'll find it again. Perkuno's Hammer is like a roller coaster. It starts out powerfully with a burst of dark chocolate and raisin. Just when you think its rising to barley wine/ bock sweetness it gives way to smooth roastiness and a warming alcohol sensation. It ends with just enough hop bite to make this opaque, thick beer a perfect porter. There is only one problem- how am I going to find it in Minnesota?

I just found this site and wanted to put in my 2 cents even though it is from June of 2002. I tasted their beers at the Craft Brewers Festival at Waterloo village and have to 'give them the show'. They easily ran circles around the other participants. My only disappointment, I cannot easily obtain their beer in my area. Oh well, good reason to take a ride.

Beers that defy the trend of "light" beers. Bold, flavorful beers that would be the trend if the masses actually had tastebuds. Highly recommended beer lineup!

Great line of beer with depth, flavor and dedication to making a quality beer. We need more beer like this made on the East coast. A taste with some *guts* to it without the overpowering aftertaste of overhopping *prevalent* (with a disregard for the malt) in American brews.

The Two Druid Gruit Ale is a very usual but great tasting beer. Well worth a try. The Cinderbock is excellent as is all the beers.

Such big beers from such a small place! Lunacy, Baltus, Perkuno's Hammer, Two Druids Gruit Ale and then his seasonals, Stickenjab, Old Salty Barleywine, Cinderbock...all big and full of flavor! Look for his Biere de Garde coming out in limited edition soon! If in the area, call and see if you can stop by and visit! Look for all of Heavyweight's beers in NJ, PA, New York City and now MD and check out the website for events. If you haven't tried any of these, do it! You won't be disappointed.

All of these beers are top rate products that need to reach many more pallets. The idea of brewing "big" beers is just the shot in the arm that the brewing industry needs. These are top rate beers made by a hard working brewer. Truly something that you do not find to often anymore.

Any brewery hopes to establish a positive niche for itself. Heavyweight has done that. The lineup is outstanding and continues to evolve. Owner/brewer Tom Baker has added an Alt called "Stickenjab" which must be tried to be believed. If you've never had a Baltic Porter, look for "Perkuno's Hammer." You'll drink this all 12 months of the year.

Recently sampled their Sticke Alt at Andy's Corner - an excellent spin on the style. Nice and smooth and also a little weaker in alcohol than some of their other offerings whcih helps if you want to have more than a few beers. A big thumbs up.

Is this a great idea, or what? A little one-man brewery that only makes big beer. Let the bigger micros worry about "we have to make something for Suzie to drink", Tom Baker is making beer with big hairy... er, I mean, with real guts. Is it a niche? No, it's a market left unexplored by brewers who are still shackled to conventional wisdom. Maybe it is a niche in that it would be tough to make money if too many brewers tried to serve it, but... I doubt many of them would do such a great job as Heavyweight. All huge, all the time! Try these beers, try anything you see from Heavyweight, because Tom might make anything. Good to see the positive reviews on Perkuno's Hammer, I helped formulate that one, named it, too. Baltic porter rules!

Haven't been to the brewery yet. Have meet the brewer and his wife a few times. These guys/gals make awesome stuff. The Hammer is a very good beer. If you like strong stuff you have to have some. Can't wait until the Barleywine comes out next month.
