Beware Diners!! Went to the bar with 4 adults and 16 year old daughter on Fathers Day Weekend. The place was completely empty except for the bartender and waitress. The waitress informed us that they do not serve food to anyone under the age of 21. There are no signs posted on the front door, on the menu or in the bar or dining room area. Was denied service even though we only wanted food service. Took my $200 dollars and went to a more friendly place to have dinner. Avoid this place unless you want to be asked to leave. Also, the beer prices are $1 to $2 dollars higher than other bars right down the street. There are better alternatives with friendlier service at more reasonable prices in the area.

Make sure you get there early. It is easy to get a seat or a table before 9 but after that it becomes crowded.

this place is a gem. for native pittsburghers, think the brillobox without the hipster pretensiousness. the crowd is varied and colorful, representing a vital cross-section of pittsburgh life, with what looks like a healthy crowd of regulars.
the beer selection is awesome for such a small place. really obscure micros, the essential regional stuff and lots of the best standard options. liquor selection is lacking in variety, but they have rye, which is both awesome and something you won't find in 90% of the bars in pittsburgh.
at first i thought the food existed as a mere formality. the dumplings were salty and sort of one-dimensional. the tex mex rolls were underwhelming. usually when you get shitty dumplings that's a pretty bad sign. the menu is generally sparse and limited to what makes for good apps and bar food. however - i learned that the burgers are great and - and trust me, i can't explain this either - the calimari is probably the best in the city. it's plump, juicy and fried just right. i was dumbfounded but way too happy to try to make heads or tails of it.
the food is cheap but the beer is pricey, but this works well as a neighborhood bar if you go for happy hour because the $2 off draft special makes it all very affordable. the decor is great, too. just shy of trendy and just a cut above the "corner dive" feel, the art deco atmosphere is both retro and no-nonsense. this place is a plasma and a soundtrack away from excellence.
the petite blond bartender is definitely a bitch, by the way, but as far as i'm concerned that only adds to the experience. it doesn't hurt that she's adorable. seems like they are very partial to their regulars and i've noticed the more i've gone the more attention i've gotten, which is also not so bad.
again, this place is a gem, all around. it's got "this will soon be ruined by dickweed hipsters looking for the next great spot" written all over it - so go down there and grab a shot and a beer and take in some true pittsburgh before kelly's is discovered. it's definitely worth it.

As a long time East Ender, I love what they did with this place: Great beers, music, and atmosphere. What I HATE are the man hating bartenders who are flat out R-U-D-E! One of my boneless chicken wings were undercooked, so when I asked to have it heated up, this blonde, gay, punk, busty bartender kicked me a total attitude. Not cool..

Got here at 6:50pm last night in anticipation of being one of the first to try East End Brewing's Big Hop Pale Ale....and there was hardly anyone here. 45 minutes later the place was packed, but my wife and I already had cozied up to the bar. Some great beers on tap - Dogfish 60 minute, Heavyweight Lunacy, Victory Hop Devil, Great Lakes Christmas Ale, etc. Also had Arrogant Bastard's 8th Anniversary in bottle, along with a few other Belgians, Great Lakes Nosferatu and Edmund Fitzgerald Porter. Food was good, nothing out of this world, but well better than average, and the service was great - no complaints there.

This is an excellent place. There is a single page of pub fare for the food and 2 pages for the cocktails & beer. Not a huge number of taps & bottles, but the quality more than makes up for the quantity. Plus, as mentioned, the taps rotate weekly.
The bartenders were fun and the place has great atmosphere, w/ a 50s Diner-ish motif and punk & rockabilly tunes. I did see that the music choices were varied by night, so you may get a DJ playing something else.

This place is a hidden little gem that unless you are from the east-end you wouldnt know about it. As mentioned by other reviewers 12 taps, all usually very strong choices and they are always changing. The place totally changes depending on time of night and day of week. Friday nights its filled with hipster types w/ rockabilly hairdos and tattoos and on a weekday before 9 its postwork coats/ties and yups from shadyside. pancetta BLT is so good it makes you want to slap your mother. the pierced and tattoed barmaids also are very cool. Eclectic jukebox with old school country mixed with punk and lounge. Not a place you would expect in pittsburgh, very new york or L.A. type scene here mixed with good beer. I'm not a hipster however and usually wear jeans and flannel and felt perfectly comfortable.

recently had Heavyweight Scotch Ale on tap and Heavyweight Lunacy. Also, Leffe Brown on tap and Three Philosophers from Ommegang in bottles. The Mac n Cheese is best I've ever had and Burgers are huge and tasty.

selection of taps includes heavyweight lunacy, victory stuff and stone brewing. Groovy juke and massive burgers. bartender was a bit dim but nice on the eyes. crowd is a mix of postal workers, artists, convicted convicts and yuppies. place is sexy and lit with a pinkish light from the deco bar and neon. A good joint.

I enjoyed my first time at Kellys, Unfortunately the bartender was not the friendliest. Since it was my first time I wanted to find out more about the bar and food but could not drag her away from her magazine.

Ok so we crawled our way over to Kelly's Bar to check out what people had been talking about. Kelly's is a real bar, a real old 50's looking retro, black and white checked floor with nice padded booths sort of bar... It's an authentic (mostly) old bar that has been updated. Well its all that minus the 50+ years of gunk that one would expect to find.
The beer selection includes regional favorite Victory products and Stoudt's.. Other micros from Sierra, Anchor, Penn, Sam Adams, Rogue, Ommegang and Hennepin... The import batch includes a Franziskaner, Lindeman's, Hoegarden, Chimay... so the beer list totals 15 micros and 16 imports.. 14 special cocktails...
The food selection is limited to 15 items, which mostly look like sides or appetizers... We tried the mixed green salad, sweet potato fries and tex mex rolls... all are vegetarian... the salad was really green and good... the sweet potato's were over-sized, skin attached and a tad too greasy for us.. The tex mex rolls were alright, but not filling or extremely wonderful...
We saw a nearbly table consuming a char grilled hamburger with fries, which look both filling and more appealing than our fare...
Filling portions are limited to the burger and a char frilled chicken satay..
Kelly's is worth giving a try... A needed destination for people in Shadyside and Friendship areas of Pittsburgh. Recommend it as an after dinner place... Within a few block walk is both Big Bean Burrito Group's Casbah and Buffalo Blues.
Kelly's is the kind of place East Liberty Circle needs to spearhead its redevelopment efforts. It's just 2 blocks also away from the Shadow Lounge, another progressive place just too across the bridge from Shadyside.
