We decided to vacation in D.C. for a few days this year so I was really excited about hanging out at this pub. So much so, we booked a hotel just three blocks away. The food was okay pub grub, the beers on tap were acceptable but nothing super special and the bottle selection was terrific. Our problem with this place is the staff. While they didn't act like we did not exist, it was pretty close to that. They spent most of their time jiving with each other and complaining. The bartender was not very friendly and seemed far more interested in the fact that he was done for the night in two hours than discussing beer or even getting us one. This is for all intents and purposes a neighborhood bar and in my opinion, not really for beer geeks who are looking for a complete food and beer experience. If you are in D.C. and there's a special beer you have been wanting to try chances are you will find it at the Brickskeller. Other than that, I'd say pass.

Stopped in here a couple of times while vacationing in DC over the weekend. Luckily it was within a short walking distance of where we stayed. This place has great ambiance. It's located in the basement where all us "skeller-dwellers" belong. The beer selection is fantastic. It helped me eliminate a couple of brews that have been on my "haven't found it anywhere yet" list. The only drawback was some of the beers I wanted to sample where temporarily out of stock. That can happen from time-to-time. The bartender is a walking encyclopedia of beer knowledge. Sit at the bar and talk to her about any beer they have and she'll probably be able to give you some kind of intelligible answer. We only had appetizers while we were there and they were okay, nothing special. But let's face it - you don't come here for the food.

The beer and very good; no denying that. The waitress, unfortunately, was slow in erving us, brought the wrong drinks, and then made mistakes on the bill. If I go back, I'll sit at the bar

I came to Washington DC to visit my boyfriend after being apart for three months. We were very excited to see each other and went to a fancy diner and ended the night at Brickskeller. We were really excited to find some of our favorite beers from around the world and orded a round as soon as we sat down. One of my friends and I walked by the kitchen and found a friend in the kitchen who made us a special batch of frog legs and was the only polite thing in the bar. After recieving our drinks I snuggled up with my boyfriend and the insane bar "manager" started yelling and screaming at us for falling asleep in her bar. She would not even let us explain the situation and ripped the beers out of our hands and kicked us out. It is such a shame the this amazing bar has such a crazy manager!!

The Brickskeller finally serves Bell's and Three Floyds in bottles. Stopped here last week and was very suprised. This has always been one of my favorite regional micro. I enjoyed the Porter and the exquisite Java Stout. Also available: Avery's New World Porter, Great Divide's St. Brigid's Porter, Ellie's Brown Ale (also Avery) and Pyramid Thunderhead IPA. Always a fine place to spend a few hours - and more than a few bucks.

Stopped by here in June while in town on business. Sat at the bar upstairs, as downstairs was full. Belgian beers on tap? Who ever heard of such a thing in the US! Bartendress poured me a second glass since the first finished off the keg. Was at a loss to order something else, since the menu is so long; she recommended a great pale ale I'd never heard of. It came up from the downstairs on a dumbwaiter. Menu was short, but the fish and chips were excellent. Not a date place - basicly it's just a bar - but would be great with a bunch of beer drinking pals. Bought the T-shirt, got a lot of comments on it back home. Try it, you'll like it! I love DC!

I finally made it to the legendary Brickskeller. We visited three times during my recent stay in DC. Upstairs and downstairs areas are divided into a warren of rooms with a bar on each level. A dozen or so drafts are available upstairs along with hundreds of bottle choices. Food is typical pub fare. The bartender on my first visit showed me around as I was the only customer for awhile early on a Tuesday afternoon. I was impressed by the cans and memorabilia on display. I came back with colleagues later that evening and finally made a third trip later in the week. It was pretty busy both times but there were still tables available. Service was efficient, friendly and knowledgable about the beers. A must pilgrimage for any beer connoisseur.

While visiting relatives in Northern Virginia I had read about Brickskeller in the Mid-Atlantic Brewing News and decided a trip had to be made... And a whorthwhile venture it was. An unreal beer selection coupled with one of the few bartenders that could quote the charecteristics of any beer we asked about. I only wish I could have seen the downstairs bar that hadn't opened yet on this holiday weekend, but I will be back

Brickskeller is amazing! The selection is incredible and prices are fair. They really do have everything you could want. I took my sister here and she found a beer that she could only previously get in California. I recommend going here if you are looking to try imports, not domestic beer.
Don't expect a gourmet meal and outstanding service though. People come here to drink, so expect a lengthy wait for your server to take your order. The food is typical pub grub.

Brickskeller has an downstairs and an upstairs. Upstairs is where draft beers are available, and it doesn't open until 6 pm on weeknights. Our party arrived 5 pm, so we had to "get by" w/ bottles for a while :-) I had a North Coast IPA (Calif), just fine. Needless to say, w/ over 1000 to choose from, you'll find SOMETHING! The upstairs selection of drafts (about 10 of them) was truly exotic, but unfortunately I drank enough that I can't quite remember what I had now. There was a Russian River craft beer from Calif, but the server brought a Russian Imperial Stout by mistake, so somebody got a free stout. The only "ordinary" draft available was Stella Artois, and there was a barley wine. Whoever orders the drafts is a true connoisseur of beer. Wow, I'll be back.

Easy walk from Metro. Beer selection is outstanding including a claim for the Guiness World Record for most number of beers in a bar. Selection of German and Belgian beers like I've never seen in the States. Great selection of American micros. I had a bottle of Bachus from Casteel and a bottle of Mahr's Weisse Bock. Both were delicious. Food is pub fare. I had the gouda and turkey sandwich with fries. It was as good as any turkey sandwich I've had.
The manager really knew his beers and beer styles. He was definitely a beer geek. The bartender who relieved him was adequate, but her attitude could have been better. She was also quite slow.
I will definitely be back to the Brick since you could try a new beer every day for a year and still not try them all. Don't expect to be in a hurry, but then again, why would you want to be with a beer selection like they have?

The beer selection is almost as vast as I've ever seen (hundreds of brews). It's literally impossible for a beer drinker to be dissatisfied. The food leaves just a little to be desired. Brickskeller could use a little touch of "home cookin'", rather than serving processed dishes. The service is outatanding; the server was bordering on overattentive (a good thing, consiering the alternative).

Awesome beer selection from around the world but don't under any circumstances go for the food. In the words of our waitress "no one comes here for the food as its lousy" and boy was she right. If only she told us this before it arrived which was an experience in itself. Four Buffallo steaks with fries were ordered which became one steak (ordered rare but came well done) 1 burger (ordered well done but came with blood dripping from it), a buffalo stew and another burger that were just about OK. Oh and they ran out of fries and onion rings when ordered for starters but they managed to find some cold ones for the main courses to replace the onion rings.
So the moral of this visit to the Brickskeller is enjoy the beer but eat before you go.

I probably should have had some food, maybe I wouldn't have gotten so wasted. The downstairs bar is a dump, but who cares? The beers are fantastic. The crowd is a mix of families, old geezers like me, and some spectacular young women.

You can't find a better beer selection ANYWHERE! Period. The food is pretty good, but nothing to write home about. Just like most anywhere else, the service you get depends on how you treat the bar staff, be cool with them and you'll get great service. Just don't be a dick. Pretty simple. I find the atmosphere different bewteen the upstairs and downstairs bars. I prefer the tables downstairs if at all possible, upstairs seems to have more of a scenester crowd. Hands down,my favorite bar anywhere to go for good beer.

if you can't deal with rowdy crowds, stay away on weekend nights, if you come during the day on the weekend or weekday nights you'll get a table and can better enjoy the beer selection. the food is standard bar stuff, but not bad. but who comes for the food? the beer is where it's at, and the people who work there are friendly, especially when they're not harried with a bunch of people like on the weekend nights.

Just moved to DC area about 5 months ago and have been there about 5 times. I have had little if any trouble receiving what beers I order...except that one time when they didn't have the '92 Thomas Hardy's and I had to settle for the '94.....Like, totally unacceptable. Gimme a break! Murky atmosphere aside, any serious beer drinker will tell you that if you want beer, this is THE joint. The food is bar food....buffalo burgers are tasty enough to eat. To the cheap bastard complaining about prices, since when is $7 for a '94 Thomas Hardy's pricey? The 25 ounce Belgians get a little pricey.........but they're 25oz bottles and they're pretty damn tasty...worth every penny of the hardly over priced fifteen-twenty bucks. Anyone with a job (or a steady source of income) and a decent frame of reference will find the prices to be just as agreeble as the beer selection and the staff. And people, unless you server uses profanity or insults you, you just plain have to tip at least 15%. Not doing so is the equvalent of saying F-you....and is a huge insult!

The best beer bar ever! Those who complain about the lack of taps are missing the point. If a Bud Light draght is what you're looking for, you might as well save yourself the trouble and stick with you local Applebee's. But if you want to sample beers that you'll never see anywhere else (except their native country, of course), you've found the right spot!

I lived next door to the Brick for 3 years, and once you know the menu, it's a fine place to eat dinner. The bacon cheddar burger is always worth it, and the cheese steak as well, although it's unworthy of the "philly" bit, it's tasty. Beer is restocked on tuesday mornings, so if you hit it on a sunday or monday, expect them to be out of whatever is the flavor of the month. Servers WILL take your inability to determine 15% of the tab as a personal insult, and they will be pissy about it. It's basic math, learn it. If you leave someone a dollar tip on a $57 dollar tab, don't be shocked when they hand it back to you.

A really amazing selection of beer but pretty grim ambience. The Brickskeller looks like a student dive and the only place to find more smoke in a bar is in Prague. The food is wretched. Really awful. When was the last time you had half-cooked French Fries? But I have found the service fast and helpful and the vast selection of interesting beers and ciders makes up for the distressing atmosphere. Maybe it encourages you to try even more of the beers...
