After the recently concluded Belgian Beer Fest at Max's, they (and especially Casey) deserve kudo's for doing such an outstanding job, from the planning to the execution. The selection of beers was unsurpassed, with many never before seen in the States, let alone in Baltimore. The beer menu itself was creative and informative, and doubled as the food menu. The food specials were also Belgian inspired, reasonably priced and well prepared.
Prices for the beers on tap were average; the sample size, at $3, was exceptional. The bartenders were doing a great job handling the huge crowd on Saturday afternoon (even when they were trying to decipher some of the inane pronunciations of the various Belgian beers).
There had to be a ton of work getting this event put together. They should be very proud of the results.

I am very surprised at the negative comments. I have been coming to Max's for years, and have always had nothing but great service. Sure, if you come in on a Friday or Saturday night, the place will be packed, and it will be hard to get decent service, but that is the price you pay for going into a place that is so popular. I have seen the bartenders spend several minutes helping out customers who have never been to Max's before and have no idea what to order. They always are ready to suggest a beer you will like based on other beers you like. Also, there is no table service, so if you sit down and get no service, then now you know why. If you want to find a great beer you have never had before, talk to Jaimie. He knows everything there is to know about Max's beer.

The beer selection is truly awesome. On a visit to Fell's Point, I always stop into Max's. They turn over the beers rapidly enough such that you don't get stale beer.
As mentioned by others, the bar can get pretty crowded on weekend evenings.
The bar tenders are very spotty. Some are friendly, helpful, and willing to make small talk about the various beers if it's not too crowded. However, they're very abrupt with people who aren't ready to immediately order from the very large list.
In one illustrative example, I sat by myself one evening and watched a young customer leave a smallish tip on a big bill (something I don't endorse). The bar tender proceeded to insult the kid, provoked a shouting match with the befuddled kid, and then had the bouncers push him out onto the street.

I don't understand the negative reviews.. We've always had excellent service from an extremily friendly barkeep by the name of "Bob". Maybe because we frequent Max's during the afternoon. It's hard to find a better beer selection on tap. It's a great find!

Plenty of beer to choose from, but I got the last Saranac Pumpkin bottle, and my friend had to settle for a draft which was nasty tasting. I ordered one also to see what it was all about. I love beer, but could not even get myself to drink another sip. When I put it back on the bar and complained, I was told I could order another but would be charged. I have been to several "respectable" establishments that will give you another choice if the one you chose socks, but no dice here. I was told "What do you want me to do pour it back into the tap?" He could have poured it on the floor, then it would have at least served some purpose! Overrated in my opinion. There were several other establishments in the neighborhood that were much friendlier and we had more fun in those places. Steer clear and save yourself some time.

I went there the other night with a couple of people after being pointed in that direction by a local of Baltimore. We were told that the beer selection was the best ever and that it's where most of the locals hang out. Granted we knew it would be busy considering it was a Saturday night, but what we experienced was ridiculous. To start things off, the bartender that waited on us was incredibly rude. Everytime someone from our group ordered something, he would mix around our words to make us sound like idiots. I guess that greasy look he was going for wasn't impressing anyone, so he had to go with sarcasm to get attention. Secondly, half of the people there seemed like they were fresh out of high school. Were these kids being carded or was the door man too blind to know what a fake ID was? Seriously, the whole night was ruined once we walked in Max's. I think the only worthwhile thing about this place was 1.the no cover charge and 2.the beer selection. Other than that it was a wash.

This is not a review (Did one previously), but to inform those folks who have had poor service at the bar (something that I personally have never experienced), there is an upstairs bar, Mobtown Lounge, which offers a quieter atmosphere and cigars.

Saw the two most recent reviews and was surprised. Have been in Max's when it was very crowded and when I was the only customer in the place. Every time I have been there the service was excellent. Stopped in earlier this week and had some great beers, some great nachos (with pulled pork, a nice touch) and the usual excellent service. Max's is a local treasure and is a must visit for any person going to Baltimore. I only wish I could get there more often.

Would love to rate Max's based on something other than the beer selection and service, but those were the only parts of the place I was able to experience (or, for service, not experience).
Deceided to go there and have a brew or two at one of 'the world's greatest places to have a beer', and upon walking in and seeing the selection, I was in beer heaven. Beer heaven went in the opposite direction about 15+ minutes later when, after not have even received the slightest bit of attention from a bartender or wait staff member, my group walked out.
During that 15 minutes, one bartender talked on the phone behind the bar, a second sat at the other end of the bar talking to people he knew, and a third poked his head out of a door at one end of the bar once, never to be seen again.
On a weekend night, during a game, or at some other 'peak' time, I could understand a bit of a wait, bit at 4pm on a Weds. afternoon when there are maybe 20 other people in the place? Pitiful service for a 'world's best'...

I think all previous reviewers have it right. After livign in Baltimore for many years, pretty much everyone I know has a love-hate relationship with this place. Needless to say the beer selection is the best in Baltimore and probable in Matyland. The rest always has to do with the staff. A few of the barmen are great at what they do and are extremelly friendly, if you happen to go when they are serving you are in for a great night. About the other half of them are true @$$holes. I have been told and have seen other peopel being told that if you ever wave at the barman you will not be served for the rest of the night. If it takes you more than 1 second to make your order, you hessitate, change your mind, ask for suggestions, or have a large order for these guys they will blow you off and go serve somebody else, they treat you as if it was your privilidge to be there. And yes... I also requested to see the manager once about being treated rudelly, and yes he also told me "if you dont like it go somewhere else" Do I recommend people to go there??? Luck of the draw, hit or miss, awesome night or horrible night... depends on how is behing the bar... worth taking the chance every now and then. If they are rude, just head oevr to any of the other bars a few feet away...

I live in Baltimore and at first was exited to find a bar which had such a wide selection of beers. The first time I went I had no problems with the place, I had little interaction with the staff, just a new bartender who was nice. The second time I went I had problems. The first time I tried to order at the main bar I stood there while at least three guys waved down the bartender, some knowing him by name, cutting in front of me. Finally I decided to try and wave him over, he came over and said he would not serve me if I waved at him and he sees me waiting. He did this in a very rude manner. Finally I got a beer from another bartender. I continued to pay pool and had a few beers. At closing time very aggressive bouncers run through the bar slamming chairs yelling at everyone to get the "F" out and such, treating the same people spending good money like trash. I thought this was supposed to be a classy place but obviously customer service is not stressed to the staff. A good friend of mine went on his birthday and asked the server to recommend a certain style of beer, the server recommended two beers which he had already had before and he asked if they had anything else similar. the server was very rude about it and my friend asked to speak with a manager. The manager came over and basically said if you don't like our service you can get out. Overall I am very disappointed with Max's, they do have an impressive beer selection but I can't justify giving my business to an establishment that lacks so much in customer service.

Stopped by this weekend for the Belgian Beerfest. Truly an event worth attending - over 60 Belgians on draft & over 100 in bottles! What a selection! Service was outstanding, even with the horde of patrons. To paraphrase Winston Churchill, "Never have so many been served so well by so few". Thanks for a memorable experience!

I visited Max's for the first time in Dec. 2004 while at the American Towman convention and loved it. Great varity of beer and almoet a tutourial in finding the one that best suited my taste, thanks Jessica. The ATHS had their annual antique truck show in Baltimore in May 2006 and I could not stay away. Wanted to taste as much of their varity of beer as my body would allow and have a bite to eat, both excellant. The cigar bar upstairs is wonderful, not as crowded, quieter but has cigars and all of the other amenities. I can't wait for a reason to get back to Baltimore, Max's is my first stop. I may make a trip east just to get back there.

A perfect ten and absolute gem of Baltimore! Wednesday happy hour features Pinch a Pint--take home the glass you drank out of featuring a new, often local microbrew. Max's caters, too, and their food is formindable to any casual diner. Hefty burgers and exquisite fries. They have wraps and hummus dips--fare you'd never expect at such an establishment. Of course, the beer selection is unmatched. If it's not on the list, ask for it. I discovered Cooper's dark ale this way. Also, they have an excellent Belgian selection including my favourite Affligem. For the ladies, try a cosmo, skillfully assembled and elegantly presented. Max's also has an extensive tobacco selection complete with upstairs cigar lounge.
It's not a sports bar, and not everyone knows your name, but the beer is always flowing and the memories are fond. Max's is a place you can proudly call your haunt.

I'm back, because I went back ...to Max's that is. Here is some of the current taps (those I tried): Rogue Schwartzbier (ABV 6.0), Blue Ridge Hopfest (ABV 6.2), and Whitemarsh Gunpoint Pale Ale on cask. BTW, Max's has an outstanding bottle selection, one that includes the magically delicious Three Floyds Alpha King. I am unable to stay away from here. Help! Please!

The word "Awesome" pretty much defines this gift from the beer gods. Rotating taps, clean lines, excellent bottle selections (though honestly I have yet to venture beyond the extensive draft list. Having pubcrawled all over the world, back and forth across this grea land, and up and down the East Coast, I can sincerly consider Max's one of the greatest beer bars in the world. Here is what I had on my last visit: Belhaven's Wee Heavy, Coniston's Blue Bird Bitter, Monty Python's Holy Grail Ale, Troeg's Dead Reckoning and the indomintable Victory Storm Imperial Stout. Whew!
