A friend and I hit McGillin's in the evening, after some trouble in finding it. It was worth the effort. A classic, rough-hewn, classic pub with rickety tables and chairs and a long bar. The beer selection was good, and included Dogfish Head 60 minute and two beers brewed for McGillin's, an ale and a lager. Food was excellent pub fare and hit the spot on a cold night. Our server was very attentive and friendly. Worth a stop.

Went for NEA convention last summer before joining crawler. Had to go back a couple of times while convention was on. Very friendly and helping to Iowans in the city. Closed the 4th of July but directed us to Ludwigs which was open. The prices were fair and will enjoy another pint or so if I visit again.

I just arrived in Philly and went for a walk before checking pubcrawler. I walked a few blocks and happened to look down an alley and see a sign for an "Ale House". I thought I would check it out. I walk in and see a huge line of taps and think I am in heaven. The list was predominantly Northeast craft breweries but since it was a blue collar bar, they also boasted american lagers such as PBR. Food was standard pub fare. Go for the regional beers, and great local feel.

In that they received their original liquor license - still posted behind the well-worn bar - in 1860, McGillins Ale House is considered to be the oldest existing tavern in Philadelphia. Not so hard to understand given that its Drury Street location, which is your basic alley, is well hidden among the warren of cobbled City Center side streets, secluding it from modern day.
Anyone interested in the history of a city needs to visit the local haunts, taverns and drinkerys of the wags, scoundrels, rogues and rakes who are part of this history; and McGillins fits this purpose as well as providing business types, tourists and young Philadelphians with a convivial spot to stop, lunch and relax over a few pints of finely crafted regional microbrews. And McGillins does this as well; this is a great place to taste such excellent quaffs like OReillys Irish Stout from Sly Fox Brewing Company in Phoenixville; the slightly hoppy Philly Pale Ale from Philadelphias own Yards Brewing Company and the incomparable Stoudts Brewery, of nearby Adamstown, which makes several of McGillins house beers.
Perhaps Ben Franklin, local wag and notable elbow-bender, was right when he (supposedly) remarked: Beer is proof that God loves us and wishes us to be happy.

Very nice pub. The oldest in the city. I was in town for King Tut and someone recommended I try McGillin's. The beer selection is good and the food is excellent. I ordered the seafood special and received a huge bowl of mussels and shrimp. Some of the best mussels I have ever had. Typical of most pubs the beer is served too cold. So I had to order two at a time and let them warm up. Actually that may be an advantage. They have two house beers brewed by Stoudt’s. The Ale was quite good. I will definitely visit next time I am in town.

As soon as I arrived in Philly and checked into my hotel I went to this pub. I found a seat at the bar and ordered a beer and paid the bartender with a $20 and he gave me change for a $10. I called him over and stated I paid with a $20 and he said no it was a $10 and walked away. There is no doubt in my mind it was a $20 so I got ripped off for $10 at McGillins, welcome to the city of brotherly love!!! With that said as a tourist this is definetly worth a stop, great beer selection and food and the history that surrounds this pub. Just be carefull when paying with cash as I outlined above

Cool place - we just had a beer here on a rainy Saturday evening after enjoying dinner at Monk’s. We saw the transition toward a younger crowd while we were there. I had the Stoudt’s Abbey Triple and my wife had a Troegs Sunshine Pils. The draft beer choices included beers from several regional craft brewers (but no Yards at this time) and a handful of imports, but seemed to underachieve on overall style variety – a few too many golden lagers and summer wheat beers for me. I’m sure I would have liked the draft choices better if I had visited when fall and winter seasonal beers were on tap.

A great bar in an alley that you might miss if you weren't looking for it. A real gem, be sure to put it on your Philly "to-do" list. We had the best time here & Susie, the bartender, was awesome. Several local brews on tap. If you can only pick one bar on your visit, pick this one!

this was the greatest bar we visited during our trip of 09/24/05. this is a must do when in phila. this is the oldest bar in phila circa 1860. old world charm meets with present day beer nuts. it has a german atmosphere with steins and pictures every where. while sitting the bar and looking out the windows you would swear you were drinking in germany. we found the staff to be charming. we had john the bartended most of the afternoon. he has a great energetic attitude, he was a pleasure to "hang" with. we found the food to be very good and very inexpensive. i had the shephards pie for 6.95 and it was good. i expect to visit philadelphia again soon and mcgillins will be the first place i go. i hope you enjoy it as much as i did.

Enjoyed the McGillin's beer on draft, & the service & food were both fine. Could have used just a tad more light and a lot less volume on the music, but still enjoyed my visit. Nifty atmosphere, & worth a stop.

Went for a happy hour here and ended up stayin until close!! Great atmosphere and 20s/30s single scene--my only complaint is that it gets very crowded on fri/sat nights and its way too loud (I think I was partially deaf for about an hour after leaving) and you had to scream just to talk to people standing right next to you--yet, still a good time?!

Don't forget to try the wings!! Had an order at the bar and they were extremely hot and great with a tall draft. Met co-workers there, it's very noisy, you have to scream! but still a great place for after work meetings/meltdowns, if you can find it.......

Great beer specials-5 bucks a pitcher for honey brown, miller lite and rolling rock on every nite except for fridays. 10 cent wings on tuesdays, too!always a mixed crowd of college students from all over the city, businessmen/women, vacationers, etc. mcgillin's is always a great time! it may take you a little while to find it, but it is definately worth looking for!

I stumbled across this bar by accident but what a lucky find. It is tucked away down a small side street but worth looking for. Good beer and a great atmosphere in a traditional bar. Must be one of Philadelphias best.

I went for another meet the brewer night, it's once a month. See below for the beer reviews. Had the chili, was very good. Nice and spicy. Bartender must been having a bad day, wasn't very friendly.

In my opinion, the finest bar in the city. It can be difficult to find but if you can make your way to 13th and Chestnut, your not too far away (about a block). I recomend that everyone in the Philadelphia area make this a destination on your next drinking excursion. I also recomend you visit McGillins on tuesday nights, cheap wings and cheap beer!

I've been going to this place for years. And I've been looking for another place to go, but I always end up here. This place is truly Philly's best.

McGillin's is a Philly classic. They have a fair number of beers to choose from, with nothing out of the ordinary. It's just a cool place to go...lots of history to it. The bar is fairly decent-sized, but can get crowded on weekends. It's a good stop if you're doing a pub crawl.

I recently did a beer bar run in Philly and this was one of my many stops. The oldest bar in town and it is really a cool place and I encourage everyone to check it out. They have a nice selection of micro brews, nothing great but several to choose from. I will be gong back to this place and will take my freinds to show them another great bar in Philly.
