first visit could not get anywhere near the bar as it was full of suits. Tried again later on and managed to get a seat. bar person just put the samples on the bar and failed to say which was which. None of the beers were fantastic and the toby's old ale was too warm.

I went on a Saturday evening around 5:30 and the crowd that was there was thinning out. I ordered a round of samplers, which is a good way for me to determine which brews I'm going to stick with for the remainder of my visit. The beers were unremarkable, but they had a few which were tasty enough to stick with. The Red, Pilsner and Old Ale were the ones I enjoyed the most. The cost of a pint, as of this writing, is $5 and the samplers were $8.50, which is more expensive than I'm used to, but this is New York. If you enjoy trying new beers for yourself, then this is just another place for you to try. For me, the experience was, like I said earlier, unremarkable.

Beers were good, decent selection. Servers were unattentive, and seemed much more interested in looking good than discussing their brewing process. Basically, this place is a Corporate microbrew. The location attracts the white collar crowd, and some tourists due to proximity to the Today Show. The owners seem much more concerned about maximizing revenue and margin than brewing great beers and having a knowledge staff.

Not bad beer, food is pretty good, crowd can be stand-offish. Oh that's right, this is NYC.

Not bad, but not worth making a special visit. We were there on a Wednesday night, when it was deserted. I would imagine after work hours gets the place packed.

I thoroughly enjoyed the Empire State Bitter. "Naturally carbonated" was a nice way of describing the beer. It was a pleasure to find a cask conditioned ale whilst visiting New York. The fact that we were given a free pint(albeit the smaller American size pint),was an added bonus.

A Saturday afternoon in March found the Commonweath almost deserted--no white-shirts that other reviewers complained about. Service was so-so. The bar tender was more interested in talking to the servers that had nothing to do. Their stout seperated like Guiness--albiet much faster. It had a smooth full flavor--doesn't accost your mouth. The Empire State bitter was not bitter at all. It tasted more like an amber. It had a nice flavor, but was NOT a bitter. It's ok if you're in the neighborhood, but not worth a special trip or fighting a crowd.

Six options, two of which were seasonals: a "Spring Bock" and a "Belgian Grand Cru". Both were quite good, the latter having only the slightest hint of coriander.

We went with 8 men on a pub crawl. On Sat night we were unable to be served at 9:45 because they had last call at 8:30. Commonwealth in Boston would be out of business if they tried this.

The hand pumped ESB was great! It was served at the proper temperature, which doesn't happen at every brewpub. I visited on a Thursday afternoon and the service was terrible. My waiter didn't know much about the brews.

Awesome! Great Good Good Great
I visited Commonwealth on a Saturday for lunch. I sat at the bar with a friend. I had a Prometheus Pilsner and a Gotham City ale. Both were excellent. I like the idea of listing the alcohol content of every beer (it ranged from 4.2% to over 7%) on the menu and on a chalk board over the bar. My friend had a martini, which was also excellent. Being a Saturday afternoon during Christmas season, the joint was crowded. The bar tender did his best to service everyone. I thought he did a great job of making drinks and serving food plus serving the wait-persons drink orders. The location on Rockefeller plaza is convenient to everything in midtown Manhattan. Commonwealth is definitely a place I would go back to.

Have never been impressed with this place. Seems like someone thought it was a good business idea, but had no idea how to brew beer (or how to find someone who does). The beers are fair to good, but nothing to brag about.

Great ESB (9/97). Good Grub. Reasonably low second hand smoke level for a NYC pub (at least during my single visit).

To their credit, they are the only brewpub in town that lists the alcohol % in each brew available. The seasonal pumpkin ale was quite spicy and good.
