Hi Aj-It sounds like a bottle of Saranac Ginger Beer, which is actually a soft drink, inadvertently made its way into your package of Saranac Beer! Your description of this product is not surprising, since it is not actually supposed to taste like ‘beer’, even though the word is part of its name. We apologize for this and wonder if you might e-mail us at info@saranac.com so that we can discuss this with you directly. We also hope that despite your unpleasant experience that you will continue to try Saranac Beer in the future. Cheers!

This brewery concentrates on the Saranac line of beers. They brew a wide variety of beer ranging from India Pale Ales to Lagers to Wheat Beers to Stouts. My favorite is their Black Forest which is a Bavarian Black Beer.

FX Matt's Saranac line is surprisingly good stuff for a place whose primary focus is contract brewing. Nothing to hunt down from all corners of the earth but I wouldn't be ashamed to serve it at a backyard barbecue.

My 12-pack of Saranac Lake beers contained a bottle of ginger bear. I tell you, it reminded me of nothing so much as the purgative I had to drink before my colonoscopy. To call it swill would be charitable. Please take it off the market. This beer does nothing for your reputation. --ajv

It's worth a visit just to see the beautiful building, built in 1880's splendor. But they pastuerize their beers, so there you go.

This review is for the F.X. Matt brewery tour. Well worth it! Matt's still contract brews as well as turning out it's own Matt's and Saranac lines of beer. Caution: Matt's is not their best product. In fact, it isn't very good at all (but Saranac is great). F.X. Matt's is one of the oldest breweries around, predating prohibition (they made non-alcoholic ginger ale to stay in business). It is a great tour, lots of history, and the tasting session at the end is the best. Big, beautiful old carved bar. Hint: stick around and jaw with the tour guide until most of the group has finished their free glass and left. Then, with far fewer people around, they start breaking out some of the 'specials' and contract brews. These sessions can last well after the tour is done, so please have a Designated Driver or take the bus.
