After visiting the sister store in Nashville, my general impressions are that the food and the service is much better than the beer. Being an IPA fan I tried that first. It was a little different than most and not nearly as hoppy as I like. Also tried a seasonal, Espresso Stout which I found quite good

I enjoyed their pale ale and their stout. The pale ale being in the American Pale Ale style. Service was excellent, even though the place was very crowded. Food was delicvered rapidly and was delicious. The desert was enough for two and delicious . . . now if I could only remember what I ate:) I will certainly visit this establishment again on my next rip to the Chattanooga area.

Considering that this is a chain brewery, it had a very comfortable, local feel to it. We started off with a sampler which allowed us to try the 6 beers normally on tap and the 2 seasonal beers currently being offered. My favorite was the Sweet Magnolia Brown Ale, but the Iron Horse Stout was also good. As for the food, it was excellent and the portions were more than generous. Our server was very attentive despite it being full house on a Saturday night. I'd certainly go back on my next visit to the area!

You guys dont get out much, do you?? This is a Gordon Biersch brewery, and they are always inferior. The food was too fishy and the beer bitter. We won't be back. Try a Rock Bottom or one of the better local brewpubs.

This is an update to my review from October 2004. We were lucky to be able to return here again this weekend (October 2005)for a conference and we had dinner here both Friday and Saturday nights, again on Saturday with a large group. There are so many times we have seen places go downhill over the years. However, this is not true of Big River. The beers continue to be fantastic - we had the Oktoberfest Bier, since it is only out for a short time, and we were not disappointed. It is served in its own Oktoberfest 20- ounce glass, so there's lots of great beer to drink! We also had the Sweet Magnolia Brown Ale and the Iron Horse Stout - both excellent beers. The service was as good as can be expected with a large party of 33 people, but no one complained. Food was great, especially the shrimp and grits. Whatever Big River is doing to stay busy and to satisfy its customers should be copied by other brewpubs. It again appears to be frequented by locals, including those with young families. Something is good here! Keep up the good work!

The Iron City Stout was everything a stout should be, but I wound up really liking the seasonal wheat beer. Nice palate with just a hint of citrus zing. Our dinner was good as well. The 10% off coupon from our hotel didn't hurt either. Looking forward to going back

I ate (and drank) here several nights while in town working. All three times, I had pretty bad service. Their beers were pretty good. The seasonal Winter Porter was great on cask.

Obviously, from my "Awesome" ratings, I am very impressed with this brewery. This is a terrific place, located in a prime spot in downtown Chattanooga. Right by the Aquarium and just a couple of blocks from the Lookouts new ballpark. Lots of hotels within walking distance, so there's no need to drive. We went here for dinner and to try out their beers on Friday evening. (We had been here when they first opened, about 10 years ago, and remembered being impressed with the establishment at that time.) I started out with their seasonal - an Oktoberfest - a very fine lager. Since I especially like Browns, I had to try their Sweet Magnolia Brown Ale. This, too, was excellent. I could see that the next night at this Brewery was going to be tough making a decision as to what beer to have. We were one of many large parties with a convention and had about 20 people in our group the next night. I did not hear one complaint about any of the beers. I settled on the Iron Horse Stout the second night and, again, I was not disappointed. Some ohers had the Imperial 375 Pale Ale and the light beer. The food here is also outstanding. From the enchiladas, to the meatloaf, to the shrimp/cheese grits, to the lobster/shrimp pasta, no one had a complaint. And the portions are huge! Even with our large party, the service was excellent. The staff seemed to have everything under control. It also appears as if many locals, including young families, frequent Big River.

The Iron Horse Stout is a must try for people with a real respect for the flavor of beer. Definately not for the watered down light, light....beer drinker. The Sweet Magnolia is an excellent second runner up, while the seasonal Wowzer Wheat is a great tasting wheat beer.
The food is an excellent compliment for the great beer selection. One should not have any trouble finding a beer to match the grilled samon, or the heartiest steak.

I was happy with the food quality, but was VERY, VERY disappointed when I got home and realized my card had been charged an extra almost 6.00 that I DID NOT AUTHORIZE (I had also left a cash tip on the table, and this extra gratuity was still taken out of my account.) We were only a party of 3, so extra gratuity should not have been charged. I had thought I might return to this establishment, but now question the honesty of the establishment.

Located across the street from the famed Tennessee Aquarium, Big River Grille and Brewing Works offers weary travelers a nice break from the from the tourist activities in downtown Chattanooga. This combines good- tasting brew with a full menu of food selections along with billiards and lots of televisions to watch your favorite sports.
There are six beers in the regular lineup: Southern Flyer Light Lager, Vienna Lager, Sweet Magnolia, Iron Horse Stout, House brand IPA, and Imperial 375 Pale Ale. The standouts are Sweet Magnolia- a sweet brown ale with the taste of chocolate malt, molasses, and maple syrup; and Iron Horse Stout- a beer with a roasted malt taste with touches of coffee and burnt flavors. These latter two products have won awards at the Great American Beer Festival, adding further proof of their superiority. The others are pretty good, although not outstanding. There is usually one seasonal beer on tap, to round things out, for a total of seven choices.
Food portions here are large and the cost is reasonable. A sandwich platter sells for between $6 and $10 and dinners sell for between $9 and $20. Sports viewing and billiards round out the experience, making Big River Grille and Brewing Works a nice place to stop if you’re in the area.

I went to Chattanooga for the weekend with my wife, and we loved this place. It was nice enough for her to feel comfortable, but laid back enough for me to hang out and enjoy their beer. The house brews are great, and the chicken pizza and desserts are wonderful. I definitely recommend this restaurant if you are in the area. Be aware, however, the wait can be pretty lengthy. Enjoy!

I am not usually a berr drinker, but decided to try the Nashville Steamer they had on tap at the Nashville location. This is the BEST beer I've ever had. They've also got great pizza, and friendly servers.

There were seven beers on tap including a seasonal Oktoberfest which was quite good. There was a light lager which was basically a locally-brewed Miller. All the other beers were above average with the IPA being superb. Suitably bitter finish, with a smooth head. The food was excellent, with shrimp and grits and a seasonal Wurst sampler. A previous poster was right about the portion sizes. My wife ordered an appetizer and I ended up eating most of her shrimp. Service was great and attractive. A highly recommended stop in a state not particularly known for good beer.

After about 20 visits over the past 2 years, and a lot of bragging on food and servers.we took my neighbor to dinner on 8-7-03 and had the worst service i've ever had in a resturant of this caliber(great timing to show your friend your favorite place to eat). But we will be back and we will ask for james next time.
