"Thank the gods of barley, hops, yeast and agua we know what a real Irish Bar is supposed to be here in not-so-sunny New York (this weekend was monsoon season). The brogues on the Paddy’s behind the bar were so thick you had a hard time understanding them. I thought I knew what a perfectly poured Guinness was but the bar has been raised - the one’s poured here are a work of art. In the two hours I was there the Guinness tap was off for a total of two minutes maybe. Frank (don’t ask me his given Gaelic name) was a grandmaster behind the bar with a perfectly choreographed assembly of Guinness glasses passing under the tap on the way and back from their first and second pours. The young Lad that came in behind them was no slouch either. Normally I take Guinness intravenously, but I spotted a tap handle down the end that said, “Tir na Nog Stout.” I rarely experiment in the areas of Stout, but curiosity got the best of me. I’m glad I did as this was the nicest example of a dry stout that’s ever hit my lips – a touch sweeter than a dry one usually is with very nice subtle hints of coffee notes without being overbearing. I asked who made it and I was shocked (I’ll let you find out for yourself).
The atmosphere here is warm and inviting, with rich, dark woods throughout. You barely hear the sounds of the city inside, and you quickly forget where you are on this planet after ten comfortable minutes on a bar stool. The service here is the best I’ve ran across in a long, long time. This will be my first and last stop in the City from now on. It’s not cheap (nor is much else in NY), but well worth it.
