Tasting Notes: Thomas Hooker Watermelon Ale
Thomas Hooker crafted this fruit beer for the first time last year, but began bottling it this year just in time for summer. It pours a pink-hued light copper color, clean and clear with a gigantic watermelon Jolly Rancher smell — the most intriguing presentation of any beer we’ve seen in a while. Wheaty, sweet flavors distinguish the taste more than watermelon; the beer’s not as watermelony as, say, 21st Amendment’s Hell or High Watermelon Wheat. We’re guessing that’s because the beer’s (disappointingly) artificially flavored. Still, the mouthfeel boasts a satisfying fluffiness, and hop bitterness and a bit of dryness in the finish make for nice touches. The 4.5% ABV beer is strangely refreshing, and the sweetness makes the mouth water for more. Find the beer at stores in Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Pennsylvania, and soon, New York.
