A ‘Bear’ of a homebrew

If homebrewed beer is the minor leagues and brewpub beer is the majors, Mark Malowick just received a call up. His Bear Bones Brown Porter, recent winner of Grizzly Peak Brewing Company’s 3rd Annual Brew Off competition, is now on tap at Grizzly Peak Brewing Co. in Ann Arbor, Mich.

After the 4.8-ABV British-style Brown Porter took first prize, Malowick had the chance to brew the recipe with Grizzly Peak brewer Duncan Williams. Williams said the dark amber beer has a sweet chocolatey malt aroma and tastes sweet with a smooth caramel malt flavor that has a toasted malt finish.

Looks like there’s nothing ‘Bear’ bones about it.

Other award-winners in The Brew Off, held May 12, were Jeff and Susan Rankert whose Creative Destruction Barley Wine took second place, and their Other Smoked Beer ironically took third. Kim and Bob Barrett came in fourth place for their Amarillo Pale Ale.

To see what all the fuss is about, try the Bear Bones Brown Porter on the guest tap at Grizzly Peaks in Ann Arbor at 120 W. Washington Street. They are open 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 11 a.m. to midnight Friday-Saturday and noon to 11 p.m. Sunday.
