Tibetan Lhasa Beer ups exports to U.S.
Lhasa Beer Co., the only globally-distributing brewer in Tibet, will begin sending more of its Lhasa Beer to the U.S. after the first batch last August.
American dealer, Dzambuling has confirmed that nearly 3 million bottles will be exported to the U.S. each month through July 2010. They have high hopes for growth as the crisp, light beer finds favor with beer drinkers stateside, as much as a 30 percent increase.
While many Americans seem to enjoy Lhasa, not everyone is a fan. An online petition is protesting the distribution of Tibetan beer on grounds of human rights violation against the people of Tibet, and refers to Lhasa Brewing Company as a Communist Chinese company. However, Lhasa Beer USA talks at length of how they spread ‘good karma’ by donating 10 percent of profits to preserve Tibetan cultural heritage.
Lhasa, hailed as “Beer from the Roof of the World,” is an American lager brewed with local Tibetan barley, Saaz hops, and spring water from the Himalayan Mountains. Though it has a become a recent local favorite since brewing began 20 years ago, Lhasa was given an American makeover (or rather, an ABV boost to 4.6 percent) and can now be found in a number of states.
