Found: A (Second) Beer Haven on Coronado Island
Coronado Island, the little slice of beach off downtown San Diego, used to have two good things going for it: the historic Hotel Del, and the copper-color Coronado Brewing Co. (Islandweizen and Mermaid Red? Yes, please). Now there’s a third draw, and it comes in the form of a beer-and-barbecue joint. Lil’ Piggy’s parked itself at the foot of the ferry landing less than a year ago, after the Spatafore family rang up their odometer on a barbecue trek through Memphis. They brought back inspiration for a low-and-slow barbecue spot that offers wet and dry ribs, and opened Lil’ Piggy’s a few months later — but before they did, they lined an entire wall with coolers that now brim with a diverse collection of 100 beers. The selection includes big micros like Stone and Flying Dog’ California mainstays like Lagunitas and North Coast; far-reaching options from Abita and Big Sky; and yes, even a slew of brews from Coronado Brewing Co. down the street. The one thing they’ve all got in common? They all pair perfectly with the Piggy’s smoked chicken wings and barbecue nachos.
