‘Canned Beer Apocalypse’ is upon us
Oskar Blues Brewing Co. of Lyons, Colo. added some hardware from Canfest, the inaugural International Canned Beer Festival in Reno. They took home four of the 13 medals, including “Best in Show” with their Gordon Ale.
To those bottle-only snobs with their noses in the air, take notice; Oskar Blues may be infamous for using the can, but their complex creations are worth your time. Many of their brews are combinations of three or four different styles. For instance, the award-winning Gordon Ale is a hybrid of an Imperial Red and Double IPA.
Oskar Blues used cans from the start in 2002 to try and dispel myths about aluminum giving off un-beer-like flavors in their brews. Even better, they claim cans keep beer safer from light and dissolved oxygen, are cheaper to ship, and easier to recycle.
“We continue to look ahead and push the limits into four-dimensional beers without looking over our shoulder,” said Dale Katechis, owner and founder of Oskar Blues.
Other awards won by Oskar Blues at Canfest were a first place in the Dark Ale Category for the Gordon Ale, second place for the Old Chub Scottish Ale, and second place Lager for their Mama’s Little Yella Pils.
See? The can has come a long way since getting smashed on the foreheads of your equally smashed frat brothers.
