Beer’s next growth market: Pakistan?
Murree brewery is the only beer producer in Pakistan. Considering 97 percent of the country is Muslim, and religious law outlaws drinking, this isn’t surprising.
However, despite the ban, the war, the Taliban, and all the other problems plaguing the nation, Murree reports huge increases in the amount of beer it’s sold. We’re talking 20 percent, year over year.
“Sales are good, but we don’t want to shout about it because that also brings negative publicity and criticism, because this is a Muslim country — and yet sales are growing,” Murree’s CEO Isphanyar Bhandara told The New Zealand Herald.
The brewery says it gives the government almost $1 million in tax revenue each month, and recently spoke with Carlsberg about producing the beer in the UK. It’s also expanding the slate of beer locally, having brewed the Muslim world’s first 20-year-old malt.
