So So So So So So Great So So

Establishment: Millrose Restaurant and Brewing Company, South Barrington, IL

Primarily a restaurant (a large one at that) with eight beers on draft and I can only say good things about one. The Bohemian Pilsner was outstanding. I forget what they called it other than a Czech Pilsner... It was very crisp and clean. The other seven beers all tasted virtually identical with slight variations in color and hop profiles. I also had the chicken wings and I would order them again if I were in danger of starving. Don't drive too far out of your way to visit this brewpub/restaurant.

Good Good Good Good Good

Establishment: O'Grady's Brewery and Pub, Arlington Heights, IL

They had seven beers on tap. All but two were plagued by a house flavor. It may be time for new yeast. All of the beers were incredibly bright and severly thin in the body, likely due to over filtering. The Stockyard Stout was thin in the body but had a great roasted aroma and a roast/chocolate/malt sweetness balance in the flavor. The Sahti was the best (and only) Sahti I have ever tasted. I do not know the style guidelines, but O'Grady's had a big, fruity aroma and an interesting rye flavor balanced with a fruity taste. It was unique and worth trying a pint. On the food side, the Irish Nachos were pretty cool. It was a plate of waffle fries made into nachos. My only complaint was the cheese "sauce". Put some real cheese on this dish and you will have something worth ordering again.

Great Awesome! N/A Good Great

Establishment: Flatlander's Brewing Company, Lincolnshire, IL

I quaffed seven keg beers and two real ales. The Harvest Amber Ale was complex, well balanced and had a great nose and mouthfeel. The 80 Shilling Ale made me want to go back to Scotland... A clean dry, bitter, and phenolic aftertaste and great kettle carmelization make it a good speciman of an Export 80. Abe's Honest Ale was a nice IPA, very similar to an Anchor Liberty Ale; try this one from the cask. They even had an excellent fruit beer, (hear me out on this one), good enough for me to bring a growler home. Olde Orchard Ale is a Cherry Ale and I am guessing the cherries are still in the serving tank. It actually tasted like cherries with a marriage of the malt (not wheat) sweetness that made it taste like cherry pie or cobbler. As it warmed, I got vanilla notes and laughed because it made me think I had put vanilla ice cream on my cherry pie. It was VERY unique. Try it and email me your thoughts...

Awesome! Awesome! Great Great Awesome!

Establishment: Mickey Finn's Brew Pub was Libertyville Brewing, Libertyville, IL

This brewpub is definitely the best in the Chicago 'burbs. They had eight beers on gas and two cask ales; there was not a bad beer in the house. The 5th O'Rye Anniversary Ale was unique and fabulous from the keg and slightly less impressive from the beer engine. The complexity and balance were amazing but the real ale version was slightly unbalanced, possibly due to dry hopping. The two-time GABF Medal winning Gudenteit Hefe-Weizen was world-class!!! This is the best brewpub produced Hefe I have ever had! The aroma and flavor were textbook examples of the style. The only food I tried was an order of authentic buffalo-style chicken wings that were quite good, better than average. I can't wait to go back :-)
