Beer Quality Beer Selection Food Service Overall
Good Good Good Lousy So So

Establishment: Tir na nOg Irish Pub, Raleigh, NC

One of the least authentic Irish Pubs in Raleigh. Oh it's got the look, the pile of turf at the front door, even the thatched roof cottage in the back. But it's more than stolen street signs and Guinness murals that make an Irish pub. And one thing that's missing here is an attentive bar staff. On several visits, I've had the foam on my empty pint of Guinness harden to the glass while I waited. Under new ownership now, I hear, and some things are changing. Still, if you're out for an Irish evening, arrive early 'cause after 10pm this place turns into a 70s retro-rock bar...

Good Good Good Good Good

Establishment: Hibernian Pub, Raleigh, NC

One of the most authentic Irish pubs in Raleigh (I've been to Ireland several times, so I've been to a few real Irish pubs), where every new bar seems like it's an Irish pub. Here again, the noise level can get very high, but the food is good, they know how to pour a proper pint of Guinness, and there's always a few "real Irish" in the place. This could be the "local" you're looking for...

Good Great Good So So So So

Establishment: Flying Saucer, Raleigh, NC

This place is as big as an Oktoberfest bier garten, and can be just as noisy. The food it okay, but could use a new menu. The wait-staff seemed a little indifferent, and the beer-tenders are not quite PhDs in the suds they serve. With this selection of beer, as you might suspect, they sometimes pour an off-taste pint. But they're happy to switch to something that's not gone off. Worth at least one visit just to see the "souvenir plates" mounted on every flat surface, and the copper back bar made entirely of pennies!

Establishment: 42nd Street Oyster Bar, Raleigh, NC

Good bottle beer selection, and the draft selection CAN be good. Having some of the best oysters around (I prefer raw, but they serve pecks and pecks of steamed, too), this would be a perfect place if it was closer to home -- and a lot less crowded! Worth a visit!

Establishment: T S Elliott's City Market Bistro, Raleigh, NC

This place went out of business a couple of weeks ago. Too bad -- it WAS good. Bad news for the Market Square area...

Establishment: O'Malley's Tavern, Raleigh, NC

Neighborhood pseudo-Irish pub... Open mic on Monday, OK pub grub, pool tables... Good crowd of regulars...

Establishment: Barley's Taproom, Asheville, NC

Nice ambience... Review would be better if they hadn't messed up the food order -- they ended buying our lunch... The beer selection is very good... I'd try 'em again! Good Beefalo burger!

Establishment: Raleigh Pour House, Raleigh, NC

Furnished like a frat house/your basement. Game room upstairs. A great alternative to the Irish Pub next door when it's packed... Live music once in a while -- no food, I think!

They pour their Guinness too fast when they get busy, there's almost no interaction between barstaff and customers, and they play disco after 11pm on weekends! So, arrive early for a seat, enjoy the great food, and hear the LIVE music before 11pm!

I'm partial to the Porter, but the IPA is good, too. This place has a full bar and the food is good -- especially the pizza.

Great Great Good Great Good

Establishment: Four Green Fields, Tampa, FL

Live music on Thursday - Saturday. Call for details. Irish "sessions" on Sunday evenings. Professional pints of Guinness any time! Food is good, try the goat cheese! Tell Pat Ryan, the bartender Steve sent ya! Friday night is definitely yuppie night, loud crowd early and no respect for the musician. Saturday is better for the music and the craic (Irish for fun)!

Great Good N/A N/A Great

Establishment: Ybor City Brewing Company, Tampa, FL

YCBC makes 4 styles of beer. Gold, a great lager. Calusa Wheat, a very good wheat beer (no yeast visible). Gaspar's Brown, not as good as the wheat or Gold, and another brew whose name and taste slip my mind. Try any of these when you're in Florida -- you'll come back for more! And someone tell me what Bingo Bob was talking about, ok?
