Good So So Great Great Good

Establishment: Manhattan Beach Brewing Company, Manhattan Beach, CA

This original MBBC location is worth the trip. Just up the hill from beach and pier and very authentic bar interior. The beers are OK, but the pizzas are great. Sit at the bar and talk to the bartenders if they're not too busy. They are usually very friendly and helpful. Small and possibly crowded.

So So Good N/A So So So So

Establishment: San Francisco Brewing Company, San Francisco, CA

If you are walking through North Beach it's worth a stop to check out the authentic corner bar atmosphere and the really cool ceiling fans, but the beer was horrible (I've only been once, but it was so bad, I've never been back). Maybe I'll try it again, because the location and atmosphere are so good. The bartender was a friendly Irishman, but he was somewhat disinterested.

Good Awesome! Good Good Good

Establishment: Steelhead Brewing Company, San Francisco, CA

Chain-style brewpub, but worth a try. If nothing else, this is a good place to stop when you are tired of fighting the tourists between Pier 39 and Ghirardelli Square. You have to sneek by "Bushman" and "Robotboy", two of the more popular street entertainers to get in this joint, but once you enter you've escaped the Fisherman's Wharf ratrace. Try the sampler, you'll get eight or so beers and you'll probably find one you like. The touch all the bases (in terms of beer styles) here. Try the calamari or clam chowder if you're hungry. the service (and atmosphere) is best at the bar. It's poor at bar tables and iffy in the restaurant section

So So Good Good Great Good

Establishment: Twenty Tank Brewery, San Francisco, CA

Tradition "pub-style" brewhouse with very inconsistant beer. It's been great (as in best I've had) and it's been terrible. I don't understand the quality control issues. It's worth a stop if you are pubcrawling, unfortunately they were not serving a sampler last time I dropped in. If your hungry, try the food, it's good. The beer beef ribs appetizer was excellent. Check out Slim's nightclub across the street for unusual 70's and 80's bands. Toto was playing one night I was in the pub...can you say FLASHBACK?

So So Lousy Good Good So So

Establishment: Gordon Biersch Brewing Company, San Francisco, CA

Chain-style microbrewery, but the location on the Embarcadero at the Bay Bridge makes it worth the stop. The beers are marginal at best, so if you are pubcrawling just order the Pilsner and some garlic fries. The garlic fries and the view are the only reason to come here. The normal crowd here is pretty young, pretty yuppy, and just plain pretty.

Establishment: ThirstyBear Brewing Company, San Francisco, CA

Very trendy brewpub in up and coming SOMA (South of Market) neighborhood. Fortunately the beer lives up to the attitude. This place can be very crowded due to proximity to Convention center and new SONY Metreon, but it worth fighting the crowds to sample these very original beers. Order a sampler as almost everything is great. I hate flavored beers, but I'd order the vanilla ale again. The food is unusual for a brewpub (San Francisco, again), but good if you like Spanish-Mediterranean, and bad if you don't. They don't have fish and chip, or even french fries, but the tapas (appetizers) and the paella (seafood and saffron rice casserole) went OK with the beer. You'll come back for the beer.

Great Good Awesome! So So Good

Establishment: E and O Trading Company, San Francisco, CA

Very unusual brewpub, but consider the location. The King's stout and Gecko Bay Wheat (seasonal) are truly great. The decor is very upscale maybe, even snobby, but this is San Francisco. The food is outstanding, if you like asian-fusion. Try the Naan breads (lamb or potato)and satays (pork, beef or chicken). The bar itself is small and crowded, but there are a lot of tables both upstairs and downstairs, and a counter in back near the kitchen. The service is extremely inconsistant, completely dependent upon your server. However, small plates and appetizers do come quickly after you get to order.

Good So So Great Great Good

Establishment: Rock Bottom Brewery, Denver, CO

Chain-style microbrewery, but still worth a stop because of great location (on 16th Street Mall) for people watching. The food isn't bad either. I had the salmon fish and chips which were very unusual and very good. Limited selection of beers and styles, but the nitrogen conditioned stout was a true original. I visited the Rock Bottom in Seattle and Overland Park, KS (now closed). They share an identical menu and beer selection, but have varied decor and atmosphere. The Denver location is probably the nicest one.

Awesome! Awesome! Great Good Awesome!

Establishment: Wynkoop Brewing Company, Denver, CO

Best handmade beer in Denver, and that IS aying a lot! Unbelievable selection (10+) of beers to sample. Great old building in warehouse district (Lower Downtown or LoDo) near Coors field. The food is dinner worthy, but huge crowds can really slow service down. They alos have a wrap around deck for outside drinking and dining. If you only visit one brewpub in Denver...this is it!

Awesome! Great Great Awesome! Great

Establishment: Breckenridge Brewery, Breckenridge, CO

Great brewery in a great town. With all the competition in Colorado, only the best survive. The service is very friendly and very helpful. When weather permits try to sit upstairs on the front deck. If its your first visit get the sampler. You will find something you like--you can't go wrong.
