Establishment:
Times Square Brewery, New York, NY
It should be noted that all of the reviews earlier than June 2001 are for the previous Times Square Brewery that has long been replaced by an office building. The new estsblishment(next door to the Lion King) has recently opened and deserves to be reviewed seperately. Although I have only been to the place to have a quick look, it certainly looks more appealing as a brewpub. Let's hope the beer and food have been improved as well |

Establishment:
Spuyten Duyvil, Brooklyn, NY
After months of hearing great things about this new beer bar in Brooklyn, I decided to hop on the Subway from Manhattan and head over to Williamsburg. Wow!! The beer selection was one of the best I have ever seen. Although some of the more unusual selections are a bit pricey, there are plently of beers in the $5 - $7 dollar range. The place has the feel of an antique store with lots of great artifacts hanging on the walls (many of the items are for sale). You can sit at the bar or at one of the many unusual table arrangements throughout the establishment (no two chairs or table are alike). There is also a nice beer garden out back. The staff and owner are quite friendly and are willing to answer any questions on the enormous beer selections wriiten on the blackboards over the bar. Speaking of blackboards, the restrooms are paneled with blackboards/chalk and erasers for the grafitti artists that need to practice their skills (a nice idea!). To compliment the beer, there is a small selection of cheese, pate and sausage to munch on while listening to great tunes on the Juke Box.(great selection of Albums which appear to have been handpicked - The sound is crytal clear and does not overpower the bar). As for the beer selections, there is an overwhelming range of Belgium Beers (so of which I have not seen outside of Europe). Ther are also a number from the Netherlands (which is also rare in this Country - Unless you count Heineken).
I will certainly return here on a regular basis. |

Establishment:
Waterzooi Belgian Bistro, Garden City, NY
I have a great passion for Belgian beers, and to find 24 on tap in one establishment was a great surprise. MAny of the Belgian styles are represented in the draft selection , complimented by an enormous bottle selection. Considering that Belgian drafts in NYC average $9 and up, the prices for beer here were very reasonable. I even received a "buy back" from the bartender, which made the overall tab even more reasonable. Yes the dinner menu prices are quite high, but you can get around this by sticking to the Mussels and frites which average $15 and are extreamly good. After 9pm the bar area does turn into a night club scene, however there are people that are there just to enjoy the beer. Another establishment next door appears to attract many of the night clubbers as the night goes on.(many actually be connected to Waterzooi). Although I don't live in LI, I am trying to convince my Homebrew club to make a road trip to this establishment during the daytime, which will allow us to partake in the amazing beer selection without the nightime distractions. |
