Establishment: B.X.L. Cafe, New York, NY

Anytime a new Belgian bar opens in NY , I immediately have a look. This place is a very friendly establishment that reminds me of the small Belgian bars in Brussels and Bruge. Understated with a high quality slection of Begian drafts and bottles. One element that was impressive was that all of that Belgian drafts had the proper glasses to go along with the beer (including Kwak). While some places have a few glasses from each Belgian brewery, I counted at least 12 for each beer. This ensures that you get the right glass to enjoy your beer. Prices on the Beer seemed to be a few dollars lower than elsewhere in the city. Didn't have a chance to eat there, however the plates that I saw going by certainly looked interesting. Definately check to place out.

Establishment: Monk's Cafe, Philadelphia, PA

As a frequent pub crawler with my local homebrew club, we decided to make another trip to Philly for our Winter Crawl. Our last Philly crawl ended at Monk's, which unfortunately was too crowded by the time we arrived, and could not be appreciated. On this trip we decided to make Monk's our first stop, literally 10 minutes past opening time. We arrived with 14 people, and were immediately wisked to the back bar and seated at a number of tables pushed together. Unfortunately the person that sat us was confused with another group of 14 that had reservations (what are the odds of 2 groups of 14 people). When the staff realized that some of us were not going to eat, we were told that those people would have to sit at the bar( the tables were for eating only!). I found this extreamly rude, as the place had just opened, and there was no one waiting for tables (there were plenty of tables in the front bar at this hour of the day). Secondly , someone having three beers at Monk's is probably spending double the cost of someone having just a burger. There were other annoying things that occurred such as a well done hamburger arriving rare, a few requests to return beer were rejected. I guess that since Monk's now has a worldwide reputation, their occassional customers probably are not valued. Despite the service, Monk's is still a fabulous place to sample Belgian beer. Both bars have their own character, and I wish that I lived closer than 2.5 hours from Upstate NY. I will return to Monk's anytime I am in Philly and will overlook the bad service experience.

Establishment: C.H. Evans Brewing - The Albany Pump Station, Albany, NY

Decided to stop by after attending the Jet/Giants practice at SUNY Albany. Since this was a Saturday, I was lucky to arrive before the dinner crowd started to fill the place. Had three excellent beers in addition to two great appetizers on the menu. Even though I was seated by myself at one of the high tables near the bar, a number of people constantly asked if I needed anything. By the time I left, the place was filled to capacity, and there appeared to by a wait for tables. Judging by the upscale atmosphere, this seems like one of the top places to eat on a Saturday night. Will definately go back on my next visit to Albany.
