Yes, this is the same location inhabited by 3 previous brewpub incarnations. And yes, it has been re-opened with improvements to the kitchen, food, and all around. But as for the beer, it's not yet their own. Although they opened in December, they are still waiting for BATF clearance to begin brewing. In the mean time, they offer some routine domestic choices, plus 5 area micros on tap. The Honest Injun stout comes from Catawba Valley. The St. Terese pale and Kashmir IPA come from Highland. And there are two selections from from French Broad River. Servers make clear that the draught is not of their own making - just yet. Hopefully it will be soon. Establishment: Florida Brewery Incorporated, Auburndale, FL

This was once a microbrewery, turning out private label e.g dunks's) and contract beers (e.g. Gator Lager), but it closed in 2002. It's still operating but now produces only non-alcoholic malt brews like those popular with the latin market.

Establishment: Tanner's, Winter Haven, FL

Located midway between Tampa and Orlando is Winter Haven, most notable as the home of Cypress Gardens. Newly-relocated in the up-and-coming downtown pub scene is Tanner's Pub. They environment is cozy and friendly. Live bands play regularly. Along with a good menu and full bar, they go to great lengths to offer a wide range of quality beers, many of which are on tap. Like most bars in the state, the primary offerings are those from the large domestics or British Isles - fortunately it's mostly the latter here. While the place might be out of the way for many, it's the best place in town if you happen to be there. Keep up with southern beer & brewing at www.beersouth.com

Establishment: Cock and Bull Pub, Sarasota, FL

Don't know if I would have had a better time with a baby and dog in tow - fortunately for me that situation didn't come up. The C&B is truly a marvel - their current ad touts 450+ beers, mostly bottled of course as only 16-20 are on tap. I saw no wine or liquor offered. To supplement their local availability, the owners travel to Orlando to get more. While the selection leans a bit heavy toward strong or Belgian beers, there's good choice for everyone. Prices are comparible to other area bars. My only beef, and this applies to almost every bar in the state, is a lack of craft brews, especially on tap. This may get better with the recent additon of a couple of new micro-brewing ops. Note that the place is marginally easier to find in the day as signage is poor. Definitely a must-stop for the traveler - it's about 5 mnutes off I-75 Fruitville Rd. exit. Read more about southern beer & brewing at www.BeerSouth.com

Establishment: Rock Bottom Brewery, Charlotte, NC

Here is a comment I place for the Atlanta unit...they also apply to Charlotte.>>>> Rock Bottom owns irs brewpubs and doesn't franchise - The Atlanta and Charlotte units are separate from the larger company of the same name as they were part of a division of assets that took place when Rock Bottom went from a public company to private several years ago. Big River in Chattanooga was a partner in a particular joint venture created when Rock Bottom was still public, and to resolve ownership issues that allowed Rock Bottom to cease being a public company, Big River walked away with the two locations as part of the settlement. Big River is often now called the Gordon Biersch Group and is based in Chattanooga. It should not be confused with the Gordon Biersch Brewery, which produces the bottled beer of the same name and divested the brewpub group (to Big River) to comply with manufacturer-retailer (3-tier) legalities. As for the quality or styles of beer, since Rock Bottom has no control over the two locations, Big River is likely under no obligation to brew to company lines or standards, and if you go to the Rock Bottom website, no mention is made of the aforementioned units. The relationship seems a bit icy at best. To keep up with southern brewing news, go to www.BeerSouth.com

Establishment: Preservation Pub, Knoxville, TN

This is a welcome new entrant on the Knoxville scene that has quickly become a downtown neighborhood gathering spot. Highlights include a 100+ roster of bottles beers - from the usual domestics to regional craft brews and imported high-alcohol beers - and a select (and soon-to-be expanded) variety of drafts. Also available are wines and spirits, plus gourmet catered-in meals. There's live music several times a week and it's open late every day.

Establishment: Cottonwood Brewery was Howard Street Cafe, Boone, NC

Wrong. Wrong Wrong. Clearly the preceding review was written without a recent trip to the facility or a clear knowledge of the facts (which, given the writer's home of San Diego, is understanable.) Cottonwood Brewpub closed 2 years ago - so don't be mislead into going there. Also, Don Richardson, the Cottonwood brewmaster, moved to Carolina Beer & Beverage of Mooresville NC when Cottonwood closed to become CBB's head brewer and took his proprietary formulas for ENDO IPA, Low Down Brown, etc. with him - so now CBB OWNS the brands, along with their other line (Carolina Blonde, et. al.). In other words, Cottonwood is NOT contract brewed. CBB (not Carolina Brewing of Holly Springs NC, btw) is becoming something of a regional brewing powerhouse (they are already in major areas in NC, TN, SC, & GA), so I'd say they are getting wider exposure, although I'm sure they'd like more. Since Carolina Blonde is their dominant brand, it does get most of the attention, at the expense of all the other birds in the nest.

Brickstore Pub, like all Georgia bars, DOES NOT carry Belgian or any other beers over 6% in alcohol. Only these southern states allow high-gravity brews: FL, KY, LA, TN, VA.

Establishment: Barley's Taproom, Knoxville, TN

Anchoring the shopping & nightlife disctrict known as the Old City, Barley's is pretty much the top dog when it comes to places to get a good beer in Knoxville. And why not when they have 40+ craft beers, free pool tables, an outdoor patio, a menu with no fried foods that's reasonably vegetarian friendly, free parking, and free live music at least 5 nights per week. Topping it off is a staff that is knowledgeable and cares about beer. Every tap room should be this way.

Man, was I disappointed when I drove up and found it closed. To my shame, I had not checked pubcrawler before arriving - else I would have seen Sparky's comment on it being closed. If you hear of a new brewing operation or find one closed in the South, a good place to send that info is Beer South. Establishment: Top of the Hill Restaurant and Brewery, Chapel Hill, NC

The night I was there, it did not really seem to matter if the beer was brewed on premise or not - the place was hopping with large numbers of guys and gals on the prowl. Definately a happening spot. Had the porter - it was very good. Will return another, less crowded, day.

Establishment: Tobacco Roadhouse Restaurant and Brewpub, Durham, NC

Yes, this place was quite a let down. They had a fair number of bottled choices available, but as mentioned before, only three "Roadhouse" brews on tap - made and shipped in by Rock Creek in Raleigh. The brew plant is idle and supposedly for sale. As for the facility, it's a fung-shei nightmare - too large yet claustrophic. The patio is nice, but you can't get beers on tap at the garden bar. Go figure.

My understanding is the brewpub was bought by Cottonwood out of Boone and became Cottonwood Grille. Brew plant not in use as all beer is now trucked in.

I'm not sure when the prior reviewer actually visited GSBC as it closed May 1, 2000. Regardless, another investor group has stepped forward to re-do and re-open the site as City Brew sometime late 2000. [check citybrew.net for updates]

Establishment: Southend Brewery and Smokehouse, Raleigh, NC

Well, it obvious from the long list of negative reviews this place is on the shit list - but I went in today during mid-afternoon and had decent service and a decent beer. I did taste the so-called chocolate beer (now re-named a porter) and did not care for it [way too carbonated] so I opted for the Pale Ale and found it quite to my liking. It was very hoppy in the Northwest tradition and had a nice clean taste and finish. I also agree the facility is quite handsome and, according to the bartender, the place gets packed on weekends. If you find Southend lacking, other nearby choices are plentiful in this emerging nightlife district. Plus it's across the way from the fabulous 42nd Street Oyster Bar & Grill which has excellent food and an extensive beer list.

Not too far from Diamond Knot, just back up the ferry approach lane. This place is almost hidden in the bushes and there's no signage for the brewery. Look for Riley's Pizza instead. There are a couple of their beers, plus some guests, on tap. For a picture of this brewpub and others in the area, go to: http://NWBrewpubs.homestead.com
