Great Great Great Great Great

Establishment: Lefty O'Doul's, San Francisco, CA

I don't know why this place isn't already in the Pubcrawler index. It has a very nice draft and bottle selection, beautiful bar, and a great steam table of mostly German/Irish food. You could have lifted it straight out of Milwaukee or Chicago. If you're looking for a place near Union Square I would go here anyday.

Good So So N/A Good Good

Establishment: E and O Trading Company, San Francisco, CA

I tried to find this place while killing time near Union Square. First, no one had heard of it. Second, it sure as hell doesn't look like a brewpub. The pale ale I had was good, but that was all I tried. It looked like they were set up for some serious asian/polynesian food menu, with a kitchen all along the back wall and chefs running around in their hats. Not what I expected, but at least it's a place to go hide from the shopping.

Based on the reviews in Pubcrawler I was going to skip this place, but it turned out to be right down the street from the hotel. We stopped in twice the last week in December and loved it. A beautiful old bar and good beers. A selection of Chimay to go with the drafts. This is where we first ran into this $2.00 "happy hour" thing that seems to be all over San Francisco. That was a nice surprise. Hang out here while you wait for your table at the Stinking Rose down the street.

Visited twice at the end of December. A spectacular location that rivals the Pelican Pub in Pacific City, Oregon. The beer styles were done a little differently, with a hoppy Octoberfest and a malty IPA as examples. All were very good. Great food, popular place - you'll need reservations or patience to get a table.

Awesome! Awesome! N/A Great Great

Establishment: Toronado, San Francisco, CA

Ditched the family on vacation and visited the Toronado 12/30/02. A truly unbelievable selection of Belgians, in what seemed like an unlikely setting. Live and learn. Very local with dogs sitting at the bar eating along with the human patrons. Everyone knew each other except me and a trio of other beer-hunters. A great place to have in your neighborhood. Maybe it was the lousy weather, but for environment I think the Map Room has it beat. Not as near as funky and a little more friendly (?). To be fair I need to go again and spend much more time.

Great Great So So Great Great

Establishment: Brewhaus, Springfield, IL

A nice little funky bar in downtown Springfield. Kind of hard to find, so ask somebody. Friendly locals. Ten beers on tap, including Hacker-Pschorr Weiss, Oberon, and Paulaner Salvator(!). Huge bottle selection. Walking distance from the hotels, which is important if you're going for the Salvator.

The Paulaner Ocoberfest on tap 10/26/02 was delicious. They rotate it with Spaten. The bartender/owner was a very knowledgeable, friendly guy. I absolutely love this place.

Good Good Good So So Good

Establishment: Emmett's Tavern and Brewery, Dundee, IL

We visited 09/01/02, the Sunday night before Labor Day. What a beautiful tavern. The service was very friendly but a little slow, and our waitress admitted they were short-handed. I ended having go to the bar for a refill, as did folks at other tables. I had the beer sampler and there were no real duds or standouts. All were good. The pale ale and amber worked best for me. Their seasonal beer was a very flavorful (I hate that word but it's the one that works here) hefeweizen. The most interesting American hefeweizen I think I've had. The menu has a lot of very unusual stuff and we loved what we got. Prices were a little above pub fare (in the teens) for some entrees, but there were also plenty of huge (cheaper) appetizers. Emmett's is worth the stop for the hefe and good food.

Establishment: Palmer Place Restaurant and Beer Garden, La Grange, IL

Visited July 30, 2002, with three hot tired kids after several hours at the zoo and this place was a BIG hit with everyone. The 35 beers on tap included a lot of standard stuff but it was nice to find Paulner Weisse and some others. No Three Floyds or other local/regional micros. Hundreds of bottled beers included Bell's, Capital, Dogfish, Ommegang, Summit, Two Bros. The food and service were very good and kid friendly. This will become a regular stop.

The Firehouse has gotten better in the past two years in every category. They currently have a bock available (doppelbock, if you ask me) that is very good. The food on Tuesday, 5/14/02 was excellent.

Visited on 4/20/02. It's always a mystery when a bar/restaurant is almost empty but the service is super slow. That very nearly ruined my impression of this great place near Greektown. They have a draft beer selection similar to that at the Clark Street Ale House, but with the addition of (at least) Leffe Blonde. Very nice. The food - pizzas, quesadillas, burritos, appetizers - was excellent. Seems like this place would be fine for kids, too. We'll be back here often.

Well, what more do you want than Alpha King on a hand pump, a couple of goodies from Two Brothers, and Sierra Big Foot? Next time in Chicago I may just take a sleeping bag and camp out here. What I REALLY appreciated was the huge air filter hanging from the ceiling that did a great job sucking up all the cigar smoke from the kids in suits sitting at the bar. One of the best beer bars I've found.

A tiny german place with a truly gorgeous draft beer selection. Weissbierhimmel. Julius Echter (sp?) Weiss on draft that I think it was even better than the Franziskaner. Totally unpretentious. A zillion beers and two big dinners came to $45. Go here.

Establishment: Titletown Brewing Company, Green Bay, WI

Visted Titletown 04/05/02 with three kids on spring break. Hadn't been there since it opened and it was great to see that the beer, food, and service have gotten even better. They still have the excellent pale ale that I was so surprised to find (in Wisconsin) on my first visit. I also had a very good Marzen. Places like Titletown are making my vacations one hell of a lot more fun.

A beautiful place right at the head of 5th avenue. Excellent german food at reasonable (for Naples) prices. The german beers on tap are perfect. The Franziskaner was particularly perfect. 01/05/02

We must have caught these guys on a bad night. The kitchen/server connection had completely broken down. The food was very good, a little expensive, and there was way too much of it when it finally came. Tried the amber lager, pale ale, and a Belgian golden ale. All were very light bodied, not what I expected.

Establishment: Blue Cat Brewpub, Rock Island, IL

Visited August 1st, 2001. This place must have changed from the earlier reviews. It's a restaurant with very good food and selection. The beers we tried were excellent, a special pale ale aged over oak and the Big Bad Dog old English ale. The oakey pale ale took some getting used to (about half a pint) and reminded this KY native of bourbon, while the English ale reminded me of Samuel Smiths Winter Welcome. A great compliment in my book. This is a definite stop for beer lovers on I80, I74, or I88.

Ran across this place while lost looking for Bridgeport 07/01/01. My kids and I were almost the only people there on a Sunday evening. It was near perfect. Lego table for the kids, beautiful beers for dad. I fell in love with the IPA^2.

Visited 06/29/01. I would have stayed here for days (who wouldn't) but this is not a place for kids. It was a huge treat finally to have Dead Guy on draft. If you're with the family visit the Rogue Public House in Portland instead.

Visited on 6/19/01. Good menu, the kids really dug the buffalo burgers. Best beers were the Firehouse Red (malty, 6%+), and the English IPA. The only drawback was that sitting on the patio we were served beer in plastic glasses. Yuk. The location in downtown Rapid City is very interesting.

Establishment: Sioux Falls Brewing Company, Sioux Falls, SD

Visited on 6/18/01. Tried the wheat beer and pale ale and both were "OK". Thin compared to the zillion others I've tried. The restuarant was closed and service in the pub was not good. A visit to beautiful Sioux Falls Park afterwards redeemed Sioux Falls in my book.

We visited Pelican based on the great Pubcrawler reviews. We weren't dissappointed. Didn't try everything but the pale ale was delicious.
