Establishment:
Trainer's Midway Diner, Bethel, PA
The menu touted homemade food, so we ordered the "special #2," baked haddock with stewed tomatoes and macaroni and cheese. I knew something was wrong when our waitress came back with our plates 3 minutes later. None of the food was freshly prepared and was only lukewarm, not hot. The haddock had been baked earlier, with no seasoning or sauce other than a plastic cup of melted butter on the side. The macaroni and cheese was runny and pasty tasting, most likely from a can. The mac n cheese was served in a separate bowl and was ice cold on the top, but lukewarm on the bottom. Explain that? The stewed tomatoes resembled a berry cobbler and were sickenly sweet and inedible. Not at all what we expected! This restaurant definitely has some safety issues with keeping prepared food at the proper temperature. Several other diners sent their food back to be "heated up." I did complain and the cashier gave us $3 off each. We saw what appeared to be homemade cakes under cake domes, but we didn't stay to test our luck. I wouldn't recommend this place unless you order something that has to be fried in hot oil! We were fortunate to escape without food poisoning. |
