Great Good N/A Great Great

Establishment: Six Row Brewing Company, St. Louis, MO

Visited Six Row as the second of three breweries. They are fairly new, but appear to have their ducks in a row. The porter was very good, especially since it is tough to find a porter in the land of lagers.

The building was originally part of Falstaff Brewing. Great place and will visit again.

So So Good N/A Lousy So So

Establishment: Capitol City Brewing Company - Capitol Hill, Washington, DC

Not sure what's going on here. I've been to Capitol City at least a half-dozen times since I moved here two years ago. Their beer is usually pretty good. The food has been good, too. But I went here last night and had a bad experience. In November their brew newsletter (email) announced the late night happy hour was back; 10 to close M-F = half priced beers and appetizers. I finally wrangled 7 of my friends to join me for this "happy hour" last night.

First, happy hour only applies to "the bar" even though the booths are literally three feet from the bar and the place had less than two-dozen people in a place that could fit a couple hundred (Brewpubs that do this annoy the crap out of me. I'm not ordering dinner if I'm at the bar. If I'm in a booth, I'm ordering dinner and I'm ordering beer. You are going to make more money. Why don't you make happy hour for the whole place? That's what we do in the Midwest!

Second, there was no barternder for more than five minutes after I arrived. None. When the two did show up,we were told about the late night happy hour "oh they stopped that a couple weeks ago" even though it said on their website (and still does as I write this)"Enjoy all of the happy hour specials- half priced beers and apps- Monday to Friday from 10pm till close! See you on the Hill!". My buddy pulled the site up on his Blackberry and the bartender said something about asking a manager. We never heard back, but they gave us happy hour beer prices.

Finally, the staff was cleaning the place like we weren't there. I get you have to clean, but we are still buying beer (all eight of us), so maybe you could not splash us and re-fill our beers?

Maybe I caught it on a bad night. If you've stopped happy-hour fine, I know how expensive ingredients are; I read about beer and I homebrew, so I feel your pain. But update your website, fill my glass (that's all I want, I'm really not needy), and treat me as something other than a pain in your a#@. There are tons of places to get good beer in this city. I'll give Capitol City another chance, but only once. It is a recession, after all.
