Great Awesome! Great Awesome! Awesome!

Establishment: Brew It Up! Personal Brewery and Grill, Sacramento, CA

Yes, you read correctly, 22 taps! Clearly the selection in this place is fantastic. The service is also excellent and friendly. It has a neighborhood bar feeling to it, despite its size. The darker beers are particular standouts. The Nitro Porter is excellent. The Vanilla Cream Stout is very creamy and a good dessert beer. Likewise the Oatmeal Stout and the Imperial Stout are excellent. The Marzen had nice body and good malty overtones.

The ales are pretty typical. The Hallertauer Lager, though, was nice and crisp. It was also fun to watch some people come in and bottle some batches they had made (and sample a little too!), as well as others start brewing new batches in the steam powered Canadian brew on premises (BOP) equipment.

Don't miss this place. It is fun and friendly. with new beer constantly coming on.

Awesome! Great Great Lousy Good

Establishment: Capitol City Brewing Company - Shirlington, Arlington, VA

I went here 2 times last week - once at lunch and once at dinner. Neither time was particularly busy, but both times the service was slow. During lunch I sat at a table, after being seated by a hostess, and for 10 minutes there was no service so I gave up and went to the bar. The service was slow even at the bar. Perhaps the bar is just too large.

The beers, on the other hand, were outstanding. Very interesting selection. The SourPuss, a Flemish Red style, was a little thin but a great effort. The FruitCake was a wonderful fruity belgian style, despite its horrible name. In addition they had a spicy belgian style and a double IPA, in addition to their usual lineup. The brewers clearly care about their product and have tremendous talent. The service is unfortunate.

Great Good Good Great Good

Establishment: Pyramid Alehouse, Brewery and Restaurant, Sacramento, CA

I went here for lunch today. They are in the process of removing their beer system and downsizing - going from a 35 bbl system (?) to a 3 bbl system (the old pilot system from the Seattle site). This may actually be good though, as it may signal more experimental and seasonal beers for the Sacramento site, given the smaller batch size. The beers are great quality, but getting a little tiresome. 4 out of 8 taps are wheat beers mainly differing in color or filtering (with the exception of Apricot). Still not a huge difference.

The food is good, but not stand out. This would be a lot more interesting with some different - out of the ordinary - beer selections.
