Great Great So So So So Good

Establishment: Olde Towne Tavern and Brewing Company, Gaithersburg, MD

Some great beers--notably an outstanding Scotch Ale--but a few rough spots. Weekend nights are impossibly crowded. Menu in flux with too many attempts at high end cooking that aren't pulled off. They'd be better off simplifing the menu instead of trying to be all things to all people. And a potentially great upstairs tap room too often polluted by both cigarette smoke and bad live music.

Awesome! Great N/A N/A Great

Establishment: Old Dominion Brewing Company, Dover, DE

Is there a better craft brewery on the East Coast? I can't think of one. A tour followed by a long linger in the expanded pub is a must for any serious beer fan. Only bad thing one can say is their darker roasts--porters, stouts etc.--have never measured up to their ales and lagers let alone the seasonals--Spring Brew, Oktoberfest, etc--or the massively fragant Hop Pocket.

Awesome! Great N/A N/A Great

Establishment: Potomac River Brewing Company, Chantilly, VA

One of the best brewery tours, small and clubby. Potomac also resists the trend of brewing 57 different so-so beers. The handful they do make are high quality and distinctive.

Great Great So So Good Good

Establishment: Twenty Tank Brewery, San Francisco, CA

Kinda off by itself but a great space once you get inside. Beers were wildly uneven--an unreal brown ale and several other only so-so brews on my visit. I'd ask for what's good but who knows what you will get. Better off eating at the killer Mexican joint across the street and then go pounding, too.

Good Good Good Good Good

Establishment: Baja Brewing Company, San Diego, CA

Nice location down by the convention center with a big deck to catch ocean breeze. Beer is OK, a little low on flavor. If you're in the area drop by, but don't make a special trip.

Awesome! Great Great Good Great

Establishment: Wharf Rat At Camden Yards / Oliver Breweries, Baltimore, MD

Fine bitters and ESBs and some truly outstanding cask-conditioned stuff from time to time. For a complete experience, order the plowman's lunch with lots of stinky stilton cheese. Area is crowded on game nights, though.

Awesome! Awesome! Great Good Great

Establishment: Four Green Fields (Former Four Provinces), Washington, DC

Insanely huge glasses of stout, ale, lager; live entertainment and real nice pub grub (top off the evening with brie and raspberries)and you just might forget which side of the Atlantic you're on.

Great Great So So Good Good

Establishment: Big Hunt, Washington, DC

A fully functioning basic beer bar on top of the DuPont Circle Metro station. Nice jukebox too.

Lousy Lousy Lousy So So Lousy

Establishment: Capitol City Brewing Company - Downtown, Washington, DC

Known evidently not far and wide enough as Crapitol City. Plastic beer for plastic people.

Awesome! Great Great Good Great

Establishment: John Harvard's Brew House, Washington, DC

This opulent space used to house the short lived Dock Street operation in DC. Dock Street went for the expense account crowd and flopped. John Harvard seems to be playing for the tourist crowd and is making a go of it, but is still an afterthought for locals. The English-style ales for the stand-outs here--the bitters, ESBs, porters--if any are on hand go for them. Or ask for a nice free sample to help decide. Food is noveau-ish but well prepared and a decent value (for downtown DC.)To get the most of JH, plan to linger a little.

Great Good Great Good Good

Establishment: Hard Times Cafe, Rockville, MD

House brew on tap by Old Dominion, several other regionals too. Nice rotating selection of bottles as well. Big draw is the cheap, great chili. A party of four can eat and drink well for $60. Very laid back and very reliable.

Great Good Good So So Good

Establishment: Shelley's Woodroast, Rockville, MD

Nice selection of regionals on tap, especially the hard to find (in Mont. Co.) Potomac brews. The menu has several winners but quite a few duds too--woe to those who don't like smoked things. The wait staff is surprisingly young and apt to make mistakes or forget about you. My porter showed up as a stout, for instance. Still, worth a visit for the Neo-Twin Peaks vibe alone.
