Dropped in here midafternoon Sunday, we got a table right away. Place is hidden at the end of a strip of shops in the Target plaza of the massive Robinson Town Centre shopping city. More people need to make a point to find it.
The first thing that greets you as you come in the door is a row of coolers loaded with (they say; I didn't count) around 400 great beers in bottles. I gave that a once-over, most of your better beers were well represented. I noticed big bottles were 25% off Sundays, but I fell for the tap selection.
There isn't an overwhelming number of taps, around 15, but they and the cooler space were ALL dedicated to good beers, no mass-market crap.
One thing that's very cool they do here that no other non-brewpub beer bar I've been to does is let you buy 4-ounce samples of whatever's on tap, low test $1, high test (barleywines and such) $2.50. The menu suggested a three-IPA sampler for $3 (Clipper City, Ithaca Flower Power and something I forget), which being a hophead I happily ordered. Later on tried Victory Limited Lager, then switched to more potent stuff and tried Lagunitas Gnarleywine and Arcadia Big Dick's Olde Ale. I could have stayed all day. I hope the stupid new Allegheny County drink tax doesn't screw with this feature too badly.
Food was pretty good. Spouse was mooching off my cup of chili, and she's not a big chili fan. It was meaty and not too spicy. I had a chicken stack sammitch that was juicy and good even before I started using the spicy dip. Spouse loves her some reuben. She declared this one good, but not as excellent as at a similar beer bar a few miles down the highway in Collier. Daughter said she enjoyed her steak sandwich, declared it "very good." We all shared a plate of fries (good ones, looked hand-cut) with a little cheese (not globs) and bacon on them.
Daughter had key lime pie for dessert, the real thing, not the green stuff (her puckerface at the first taste was a big clue).
I didn't catch the server's name, sadly, but he was very prompt, food and beers were served in a very reasonable time. Decor is a little warmer and cozier than one might expect from a strip-mall place.
Planning on stopping in again Saturday, probably going to get the mystery beers six for $12.
This makes at least three excellent beer bars within a few miles of each other in the Parkway West/I-79 corridor, with Pgh. Bottleshop to the south and Sharp Edge to the north. So the best place to live in Pittsburgh is ... Carnegie?
