Establishment: Gordon Biersch Brewery Restaurant, Virginia Beach, VA

For a brew pub G.B. seems to have it all...all except good beer. The place looks great, service was relatively quick and friendly. Not being from the area I can't speak to location, but it is on a corner, and I think that must be worth a few points; and it is in Virginia Beach, though a long way from the actual beach.

The fatal flaw at G.B. is the beer. All their own brew is light and pretty tasteless. I go to brew pubs for the beer and hope the food etc. is good. The G.B. brewer just can't seem to find any hops. A couple of lighter beers on one end of the scale is ok for those who don't care very much for beer to begin with, but for those of us who do like beer....well.....go somewhere else. This place ain't for us.

As one reviewer put it, the food was "typical". Nothing spectacular to report. One order was for something with shrimp, but it arrived with scallops instead. My order came warm, and I prefer my food hot. An appetizer of humus was horrible. It wasn't made with the correct bean and the beans were not even blended. It was just a small plate of beans. Nasty!

The reason for going there was the beer. In that category I'd agree with others that the 44 Magnum was excellent. The seasonal Pumpkin ale was the best I've had. You could really get the pumpkin flavor rather than just a trace flavor as is common at some pubs. The other beers were so-so at best. We had a sampler platter. The selections, which did not include the 44 Magnum and the Pumpkin ales, were all quite light and forgettable. Oh--it rained and the roof where we were sitting leaked in several spots. That's the glassed area, not the main bar area.
