Blob's Park, Jessup, MD
Just an update--after a year being closed and then an extensive rebuilding and remodeling, it reopened in January 2009. |

Metropolitan Coffeehouse and Wine Bar, Baltimore, MD
Rebuilt after a minor summer fire, now with even more draft lines than before, including a dedicated Unibroue tower, and larger coolers for more bottle selection. Firkins are routinely being tapped on Thursday evenings. |

Still a live music venue, but the tavern/restaurant has been ripped out in favor of more seats. You won't be able to get a beer without having a concert ticket. |

Establishment:
The Green Room was Mogollon Brewing, Flagstaff, AZ
MAJOR CHANGE afoot: During a May 2008 visit, the brewing equipment had been relocated elsewhere in town, and the bar is rebranding itself as The Green Room. The beer is still being made for them, and the brewers have supposedly separated from the bar end of the business, with an eye towards resuming bottling (which ceased in 2004). The place more accurately is a beer bar with a couple of its own beer now, like Papago of Scottsdale, with a good 20+ taps on hand. The space formerly holding the brewery has been used to expand the place for music performances. No food, but a direct phone line to a nearby pizza place for food orders. What beers I had of theirs were extremely good, including the best amber and stout in town. I should note that I 'crashed" the place when it wasn't officially open for the day yet, and talked what staff there was into letting me buy samples...... |

Raven Cafe, Prescott, AZ
As noted, 30 taps (plus an apparently dedicated root beer/soda line) and hundreds of bottles, representing a wide selection of styles and geoography. The only "pedestrian" tap was a Guinness tap (and the staff said they couldn't get the Murphy's or Beamish they'd prefer to pour!); drafts included a couple Belgians and German beers, as well as various selections from throughout the West. Beers are priced at several tiers and serving sizes as appropriate, with a variety of glassware available. Bottles to go; bar offers an $8.99 mixed six-pack deal. |

Beer bar to be, still a work in progress a month or so after reopening. The place is the former Clayton's, before that the original Sean Bolan's; if you remember and miss Bolan's, you may feel at least comfortable here. The beer selection so far is not the epic one of Bolan's, but enough taps and bottles for a novice to find something new for sure. It's reported they're asking help on beer selection from the former Bolan's manager, so hopefully things will improve even further. |

Has expanded their beer service (and their selection) selection) with more taps and a beer engine upstairs. Cask beer tapped every Thursday night @ 6 pm; other specials and tastings compete with coffee and wine events on the schedule. |

Frisco Grille and Cantina (was Frisco Burritos), Columbia, MD
19 taps, one beer engine (usually Wharf Rat/Oliver products), aggressive selection, rapid turnover (no stale beers), local stuff and exotic stuff from afar (Stone and Lagunitas on as I type), free WiFi, beer-knowledgeable staff...... what's not to like? Small but modern, even a LCD screen saying what beers are on and "on deck" (next for the draft lineup)..... |

Dog Pub, Baltimore, MD
Is now technically a brewpub upon acquisition of the former Clay Pipe Brewing brewing system; however, the beer is brewed outside of town and shipped in, not brewed on premises. The lineup is basically the same, with nothing more adventuresome than a "Dogtoberfest" this autumn. Time will tell if they start doing anything more ambitious than apparently attempting to clone the old Old Dominion recipes. |

Thirsty Pagan was Jack Tar's Brewing, Superior, WI
In May of 2006, the brewery's 10th Anniversary, Steve & Susan Knauss bought the brewery and will phase in the new name of Jack Tar's Brewing. Rick is still the Brew Master and delivering excellent beer. There has also been an addition of a new tower that allows Jack Tar's Brewing (aka Twin Ports Brewing) to pour 8 tap lines and 1 hand pump for cask conditioned ales. |

Business has shifted to all-contract brewing at Frederick's Wild Goose (ex-Frederick/Blue Ridge) Brewery, with the original brewing system sold off. The beers, if hard to find and elusive, continue to be excellent for their styles. Latest release is "Hop-ocalypse", an imperial IPA not as aggressively hoppy/bitter as the stereotypes of the style have become. |

A new brewer has kicked things into high gear; beers such as Imperial IPA, Bull Run Bitter, Fuel (reformulated Imperial Stout), a blueberry wheat, and a rye ale are proving very good efforts in addition to the house flagships.. Service is also improving, at least on my off-hours visits. |

Attempts to be a largish British-style pub or smallish British-style restaurant, and succeeds nicely. Between draft and bottles, a respectable beer selection that appeals to both snobs and commoner alike. |

Smaller and more intimate than the Ropewalk down the street, and seemingly better run; a better selection of drafts and bottles than Ropewalk, dipping much further into craft beers and esoteric stuff, backed by friendly and enthusiastic staff. |

Maybe hitting them on a Monday evening is a bad idea; the barstaff could barely be bothered to attend to me. Place has a large selection of taps and bottles, but skewed pretty well towards mass market (though I did find a Belgian stashed away). Still pretty good in comparison with most American bars, but they could try a bit harder. |

Business sold/transferred, major rebuilding/renovation under way as I type, unknown if the few craft beers they still had will survive, let alone the name. |

O'Lordan's Irish Pub, Westminster, MD
Irish pub owned by the owner of the Johansson's brewpub, which is within sight of the former. Definitely not your "plastic Paddy pub" or pre-packaged Guinness export shack, this is located in a beautiful historic 1810 stone building. The stereotypical Irish pub booze line-up is supplemented by a few better beers such as Sierra Nevada Pale Ale; a special treat is a custom Amber brewed for this place by the Johansson's brewery. Live music Saturday nights; outdoor patio seating. The owner was reportedly in architectural salvage, and the interior looks appropriately vintage and historic. |

Routine visit, had their Whistle Stop Amber (greatly improved over past memory), Pale Ale, and seasonal Wit, the latter decent if not overly adventurous. Only four house beers, but PLENTY of worthy guest beers, including two cask-conditioned beers on handpump! A worthwhile stop, dining is reported as good as well. |

Unfortunately, the review visit occurred only mere hours before this brewpub closed for the last(?) time on the night of June 18, without any warning and with tanks full of Double IPA, English Mild and Belgian Brune conditioned with cherries. News confirmed by now-former brewer Kevin Kazar and at least one customer. |

This place operates like the one in Columbia, Md., serving the house beers brewed there along with some outsider mainstream beers. A terrific mid-afternoon lunch, served up quickly as we requested, very tasty. House beers actually seem to taste better here than at the brewpub location--a paradox I've noticed of a few other similar situations as well...... The beers are a worthwhile "notch on the bedpost" as it were, but not worth a special junket. But at least the neighborhood has a decent beer place. |

Mahaffey's Pub, Baltimore, MD
A new second-floor bar and lounge (non-smoking) has been added, and the menu and cooking quality gradually but substantially upgraded. This is no longer the "beer geek's basement den" that it once was; it's now a top-flight beer bar and restaurant. Tries its darnedest to have cask ale on handpump seven days a week; tries (but occasionally fails, thanks to warmer weather, shipping, etc.) to have fresh firkins every Thursday. |
