Establishment:
Gordon Biersch Brewery Restaurant, New Orleans, LA
My first trip to any Gordon Biersch. Pretty far off the beaten path, but worth a walk for something different. The staff was very friendly and professional; the space is clean and modern feeling. Food looked good. The line up was a little short on character, but there was some decent stuff. The marzen was too sweet. The schwarzbier was different and a little smoky. The Maibock was powerful and bitter-finishing. The pilsener was strangely floral, but I liked it. Overall a nice change of pace from the idiocy (I say that in semi-admiration)in the Quarter. Actually, this place ended up being our best beer bargain. |

Pretty nice, all things considered. In the middle of tourist hell you would expect some corners would be cut. That's not really the case here. The beers were fair, with the seasonal "Tomahawk" attempting to shoot some hops (only semi-successfully) into the line up. Not such a good selection, although I find it interesting that a schwarzbier was on the menu. The space is very cool, though. Worth a stop, but bring your piggy bank. |

Good beer in New Orleans? I thought this was only a booze town. However, DBA does a pretty good impersonation of a high end beer bar. The place has a real classy appearance and is cleaner than you would expect. Nice wine list, single malt selection. Only a decent beer selection, but I would chalk that up to May being a transitional beer month. Enjoyed several Rogue products, a nice Chimay Cinq Cent, and even St. Bernardus 12. The bartenders were mainly disinterested in us being there or engaging in decent conversation. I think that's the norm in a city where you can walk out the door with a drink to perhaps never return. I will though. |

After schlepping around town for a while we finally found Dewey's. Nice, fresh selection. Some good local beers and some distant American "imports". The only nicely hopped beer was SNPA. Finally came across a bartender willing to talk to out-of-towners. So many other bars in town come off as completely ambivalent to your presence...not here. That's why we made it our HQ. |

I really wish this place was located close to the waterfront. Comfortable environment, optional non-smoking, and decent beer makes for a reasonably enjoyable visit. As a hop-head I was disappointed by every beer except the appropriately hopped stout. That's ok, because the bitter and the pale are pretty true to style. Hand pumped bitter is real good; the pale is built for sessions; stout is very dry and good. If only the bartenders around Portland were interested in conversing with people other than their industry buddies... |

Fairly nice selection in good condition, and the samplers are a great idea. Maybe this is a rough time of year selection wise (summer beers, ugh!), but this place is most definitely not a hop-head's destination. I was not expecting it to be mainly a restauraunt wafting greasy food odor all over everything. Is this place actually considered one of the "six best" beer bars in the country? Yeah, it's ok, but I don't think I would go that far. |

They make one of the best whites in the country, which I really enjoy due to it's rarity. Some of their other stuff is sort of hit or miss, though. Not quite sure what the Speciale is suppposed to be. Bottle conditioning seems to be the way to go with this stuff too.
I seriously beg to differ with respect to the tour, though. I made reservations just to walk into, literally, a 5 minute walk through with a person who had serious limitations to her brewing knowledge. This was followed up by a 2 oz. sample of warm trippel. We were out of there in less than 10 minutes. Way too short on the tour, the sampling, and all-around beer geek comeraderie. Very disappointing. |

Drove from Chicago area to Cleveland in a snowstorm...just to come here. Not too smart? Oh, yes it was. We laid our travel woes on the bartender/hostess, who lined up a special tour of the brewery.
Even in sideways snow, the smell of mashing grain filled the neighborhood. The plant is absolutely primo. It looked like they may have cleaned it up for the New Year's party, but I could tell it is probably always fairly spotless. Brewhouse, tankfarm, packaging, and (of course) the tasting room were spectacular. Even better when you can enjoy an Edmund Fitzgerald during the tour.
Speaking of beers: Fitzgerald porter-Second to none. Burning River Pale-I used to think this was hoppy, but then I sprained a tastebud on Alpha King. Cleveland Brown-Just OK, but I'm not a big brown ale lover. Christmas Ale-Stupendous, with a lot of coriander. Could have been bigger. Oatmeal Stout-Too thin. Didn't do any lagers. Disappointed by the lack of a big winter beer. Food was great (Huge pierogies). Fantastic, friendly service. The pub building is a real historical treat.
Next time I explore the midwest the weather will be better, but I doubt if this place could be any better. |

With such a perfect location I can't see why they would need to make a good beer. Well, they don't! No body, no character, nothing. The black forest was just a different color than the red, no other difference. If it wasn't for the beautiful room, and the oysters, this place would be way off any suggestion list I would make. That's ok, New Orleans isn't a beer town, it's a booze town. |

An update of my previous review: this place has made good progress in most departments. They finally decided to start using hops. Red Ale was quite good with lots of mouthfeel and bitterness. Brown ale much more well balanced. Imperial stout always good. The begians they make will give you a headache, but maybe worth it. We lucked out and got an attentive waiter, but the cold shoulder from the hostesses. We only do appetizers: Great "riblets" and wings. Nice to have a place like this in the south suburbs (even though Flossmor thinks it's on the north shore!). |

Very attractive place. Great sized bar room...Looks like it's used to seeing a big crowd. According to a very friendly bartender they get a nice diverse crowd in here both locals and students from Purdue. Beers I had during a brief session : East side bitter was quite good and hoppy; Oatmeal stout was a little too bitter at the finish and not as smooth as you would expect; Summer red bock (Greg's first lager) was nice and hoppy but had a flavor I can't identify (tasty though). Food: Good sized menu with what you would expect, and good quality. Overall, I expect to make this a regular stop during another winning Boilermaker football season! |

Even though they gave me a hard time for ordering only a half-snifter of barley wine ( I was driving), I really liked this place. Nice small tables that hold just enough drinks. Excellent beer selection such as several Bell's products, and several of my favorite Three Floyds ( Best Pride and Joy I've had on a hand pump anywhere). It's kind of funny watching out-of -town yuppies wrinkle their noses at the old "Stop&Drink" sign that has not been removed from when this place was kind of an old-man porno bar! But, inside is as inviting a place as you'll find. |

Sorry Kath, but this is not a prototype of anything...except a way to squeeze $$ out of an uneducated beer drinker. The brown (mild?) was fair at best, the pale was horrid. The red had no hopping whatsoever. The food reflects the generic corporate M.O. Cool looking room though. They obviously have a lot of money backing them. |

From what I've been able to tell, this place is out of the way enough to not draw too many way-out-of-towners. That's good because there doesn't seem to be that ever-present Indianapolis corporate sheen. Just decent beer here in a nice cozy barroom ( which is very small). The ESB tasted just right, the porter was too thin, and the seasonal was a steam beer. It was ok, not excellent. Maybe next time I'll get to try all of their offerings. Oh well...Pizza was no big deal and rather expensive. I'll go back. |

Kind of a mixed bag here. The old train station is really nice, although with a very small bar area. Good pub food. The beer, well... my wife says they need to learn about hopping. Not enough of them in almost all selections except for the red ale. My opinion is that these beers have simply not been aged long enough. Stouts are ok, brown is too much, wheat ales are ok too. They're shooting for the inexperienced fine beer drinker here. Still a nice place to hang out though. |

The guy from Northbrook must have this confused with somewhere else. This brewery has been out of business for several months as far as I know. When it was still going, it was fabulous. Steve Dinehart is a real beer guy, and I hope we see him again. |

With such a great beer selection, I would have thought this place would have been a bit nicer. Kind of funky, but I didn't go in for the ambiance, just the beer. Cask conditioned real ale out of a cellared firkin on a well maintained hand pump (Three Floyds... what else?). Nice broad selection of ales, lagers and Belgians. |

This place is on a 5 way corner within falling distance of the Capitol building. It's a cozy place with a nice selection of midwestern micros on tap, most notably New Glarus products. This may be as artsy-fartsy as Madison gets, but everyone's friendly. |

Started with a barley wine. It wasn't good because it wasn't aged long enough and served in a dirty glass. Made my way out of the student-crowded upstairs down to the "Rathskeller" for hand-pulled IPA. It was pretty good BECAUSE it was raw and unrefined! They were serving up large amounts of weiss. It was reported to be good, but I didn't have one due to hang-over implications. This is a large place with plenty of different spaces. Quite nice. |

Nice atmosphere here. The bitter was nice and hoppy. They also had a trippel and a usually hard to find dunkel-weiss. They were ok too. The food looked good. The brew house was tough to get a good look at though because they had a wall of conditioning tanks in front. Overall, a pretty comfortable place though. |

Finally went there! This is a well known but out of the way place on the southwest side. Great New Orleans type cuisine (couldn't help it, had gumbo AND jambalaya). Beautiful bar room. The really beautiful thing here is the great selection of tap handles, mostly from midwestern breweries. Three Floyds is featured, and they even had FFFs Behemoth barleywine. WOW! Other notables at this time were SNCA, Anchor Old Foghorn, Rogue Dead Guy. I think they have a good selection of Belgians too, just not now. Live jazz on the porch. A real NO MISS. |

This place was obviously designed by a charlatan trying to pull the wool over the beer drinking public's eyes. Pale ale, amber, brown all tasted alike: Like stale Bud! No character whatsoever in any of them. I would love to see what a REAL brewer could do with such a nice brewhouse. It's a shame that a bunch of money can buy a scam like this, when there are hundreds of true beer lovers who would give their eye-teeth to have the world taste their product. |

Nice seasonal selections, cool music, and one of the nicest beer gardens in the city. The bartenders have good knowledge about all of the beers on tap. They even publish a small "beer almanac" to aid in your drinking pleasure. Nice corner windows let you watch all the fans leaving another Cubs loss! |

As far as beer goes, this place is OK, but its real strong suit is the atmosphere. This is what a modern brewpub should look and feel like, in my opinion. It's dark, industrial looking, ambiguous, and just cool to be in. Plenty of space, weird characters, and bier-stube type benches make it a nice place for a rainy day beer. |

Spent a few hours a day at this place while visiting family. It was an unexpected pleasure since most places around the area don't seem to have the selection we are now used to across the country. Not only a great selection of beers, but a tremendously cheesy set of movies playing all the time! |
