Establishment: Five Seasons Brewing Company, Atlanta, GA

Five Seasons is a very nice brewpub with a large, multi- room layout and beer that is brewed with a Germanic influence. There is a Vienna lager, Hefeweizen, Kolsch, Dunkleweizen, and other great- tasting syles to choose from. I enjoyed everything I tried when I visited this brewpub, and many of the products were exceptional.

One negative point I need to mention about this establishment is the prices. A small appetizer will run you at least eight dollars for almost no food at all and a full meal will cost you between fifteen and twenty dollars. But keep in mind that this is not ordinary food. In many ways, the food is even more exotic and memorable than the beer.

Besides the beer, music is on tap every Tuesday and Sunday evening, with local artist offering some smooth music to complement your smooth brew. The brewpub is located in the Prado shopping center, north of Atlanta. It’s a nice place to stop and relax if you’re in the northern suburbs- just make sure you bring plenty of cash!

Establishment: Downtown Grill and Brewery, Knoxville, TN

Downtown Grill and Brewery is Knoxville’s premiere brewpub, with about six or seven products on tap at all times. Every product brewed here is ale, and that means all the beer products have a pronounced hop flavor- quite different from what you expect in the typical brewpub. I enjoy them all, from the lighter colored Downtown Blonde Ale (Kolsch style) to the darker and richer State Street Stout.

Food at this establishment is pretty good, and the prices are excellent. During happy hour, all pints are reduced by fifty percent, bringing the price down to about $2. Add to that the fun atmosphere with pool tables upstairs, televisions throughout, and bands on weekends and you have all the makings of a great American urban brewpub.

Establishment: Park Tavern, Atlanta, GA

Park Tavern is located next to Piedmont Park, close to downtown Atlanta. This establishment features a full menu with a good wine selection and a handful of craft beer selections brewed onsite.

The beer that I sampled when I was here included Park Tavern Light, Druid Hills Pilsner, Park Trail Ale, Olmsted Amber, and the seasonal offering, Spring Wheat. Park Trail Ale and Spring Wheat were the best among the bunch, but nothing was exceptional. The Park Tavern Light was really far too light to take seriously and the Pilsner and Amber, while better, were still not as full- bodied and flavorful as I would prefer.

What Park Tavern lacks in beer it easily makes up for in atmosphere and food. The tavern is located adjacent to the park, and it has an outdoor patio with open views of the area. Once you are finished, you can get up and walk directly into the park. The food was also pretty good, with a menu that includes everything you would expect in a full- service restaurant, like appetizers, salads, sandwiches, steaks, barbecued ribs, fish, chicken, etc.

I wasn’t as impressed by the beer as I had hoped to be, but when you combine everything together, Park Tavern is still a good place to visit, with plenty of positive aspects to make your visit enjoyable.

Establishment: Max Lager's American Grill and Brewery, Atlanta, GA

Headed up by brewmaster John Roberts, Max Lager’s is an excellent place to visit for great food and great craft beer. Four products are brewed year round: Max Black, Max Gold, Max Red, and Max Pale. The pale and the black are the standouts among the annual offerings. Seasonals are also part of the lineup, and you can expect to find two to four of them on tap when you visit. I had the pleasure of trying the Maibock, Hefeweizen, and Barleywine when I was there a few weeks ago. All three of them were very good, with the Barleywine ranking as the best of all.

Food at Max Lagers is just as impressive as the beer. This establishment uses a wood- fire concept, which it uses for preparation of pizza and other foods. Each and every food that I tasted was prepared properly and was as delicious as I could expect food to be.

Max Lagers features a brick construction, giving it the appearance of a warehouse. There are two levels, with a second bar and dartboards upstairs. The upper level is not used very much, usually only for private party rentals.

Overall, this is an excellent place for lovers of craft beer and delicious food. It’s located in downtown Atlanta, and it ranks among the best brewpubs I have ever visited.

Establishment: Preservation Pub, Knoxville, TN

Preservation Pub has become a favorite among locals for its friendly staff and large selection of beer. This tavern is located on Market Square in downtown Knoxville, with the front of the establishment facing the large, pedestrian- only square.

The inside of Preservation Pub is long and narrow, with an area for live bands to play (which they do, several nights per week) and a long bar with lots of beer to choose from. There is a small outdoor patio, too.

During the summer season, this pub can get very crowded as locals crowd inside and around the outside. Each Thursday night (April through June), there is a live band on the square, so it can get very rowdy in this pub and in the nearby vicinity. It all adds up to a solid place to go for some good beer and entertainment.

Establishment: Barley's Taproom, Knoxville, TN

Barley's is located in the Old City area of Knoxville, close to the downtown. This establishment covers all the bases of what one would expect to find in a complete, full- service tavern: A great selection of craft beer (about 40 on tap, many of which are very hard to find), great pizza and other grub, pool tables, darts, electronic games, live music, and big screen televisions.

Barley's is divided into two levels, with the upstairs housing the pool tables, dart boards, and a second bar with about 15 taps. The excellent craft beer is discounted by half during happy hour and this discount extends upstairs for an additional hour. So, if the happy hour is about to end on the lower level, never fear- just walk up the steps or take the elevator to the second level and enjoy another hour of cut- rate prices.

The area of town where Barley's is located might appear old and worn out, but don't let this stop you from visiting this fun establishment with its great selection of craft brew. It's one of my favorite places in East Tennessee!

Establishment: Beer Sellar, Knoxville, TN

Beer Sellar is a pretty nice place to sit back and relax after a long day of work or school. It's located right across from the University of Tennessee and it currently owns the bragging rights for the number of beers it offers. There are approx. 50 on tap and another 100 in bottled form.

The inside of the Beer Sellar is nothing spectacular, in spite of the fancy entrance which makes you think you are entering a more upscale place. There is very little food offered, and only a few games, a jukebox, and televisions for entertainment. But it still ranks as one of the best places to go in the city to find some good craft brew. No other establishment can match the Beer Sellar's selection.

Establishment: Asheville Pizza and Brewing Company, Asheville, NC

Asheville Pizza and Brewery is a unique establishment that was constructed out of a former two- screen movie theatre. One side of the theatre still shows movies while the other side has been converted into a game room with a giant screen television for sports viewing.

Six different craft brews were available when I visited: Looking Glass Gold, Roland's ESB, Houdini ESP, Shiva IPA, Rook Porter, and Scout Stout. All were good, with Shiva IPA and Rook Porter the standouts.

The pizza here is incredible, and so is the staff. Head brewer/owner Doug Riley is a nice, friendly guy- the type you expect when you visit a brewpub. The combination of great food and beer, combined with a unique atmosphere, makes Asheville Pizza and Brewery one of the nation's best brewpubs.

Establishment: Brixx Ice Company, Dayton, OH

Brixx Ice is a newer establishment in the City of Dayton. It is a tavern, with a main level that seats about 100 with a few television sets, jukebox, etc. It also has an outdoor patio, open in the warmer months.

Beer selection is ok at this place, but it could stand to be improved. Food is pretty good. Prices are a little higher than average, and they can really add up quickly. Don't be surprised when you get your bill- it could be higher than you expect.

Probably the best aspect of this establishment is the fact that it is located diagonally from the Dayton Dragons Baseball team ballpark. Several of the inside seats face outward, next to the glass, so that fans can watch the game. The front of the building, in fact, is all glass for viewing the baseball games.

Overall, Brixx is a fun place- the first tavern/restaurant located within an arms throw of the ballpark. I hope that more will come later.

Establishment: Sophisticated Otter, Johnson City, TN

Sophisticated Otter offers about 4 to 6 beers on tap, some of which vary depending on the season. When I visited, I sampled the IPA, Pale Ale, Raspberry Wheat, Porter, and Honey Blonde. None of the products were very good at all, and some of then even had a staleness or sourness, which is indicative of a beer than has gone bad.

The menu here is also very limited, with only salads, appetizers, sandwiches, beverages, and one dessert. Just like with the beer, the food lacks character. It is almost devoid of any type of seasoning and it all tastes very bland and very forgettable.

The atmosphere here is ok, with two separate rooms- one of which is used for live bands. There is also an outdoor patio. Service is pretty good, too. But if this establishment wants to grow and thrive, the management really needs to make some improvements to the food and the beer. The products are bland and unmemorable, with nothing noteworthy in the entire lineup

Great Good Good Good Good

Establishment: Calhoun's, Knoxville, TN

Calhoun’s is a restaurant just as much as a brewpub, with a full- service restaurant to accommodate the large vats of beer. There are usually about seven beers on tap at any one time. The year- round offerings include Mountain Light, Cherokee Red, Thunder Road Pilsner, Velas Helles, Black Bear Ale, and Tuckaleeche Porter. Seasonals include Winter Warmer, Capricator Bock, Windy Gap Wheat, and Harvest Fest. Some other beers that are brewed from time to time, but not on a specific schedule, are Brown Trout Stout, Appalachian Pale Ale, Kilt Tilter Scottish Ale, and LeConte Lager.

Calhoun’s beer products range from the very light (Mountain Light) to the more rich and full bodied (Tuckaleeche Porter). The beer is usually served very cold- a little too cold, in some instances. But the products are all drinkable and some of them are noteworthy. My personal favorites are the porter- with its roasty, chocolatey body- and Velas Helles, a former Gold Medal winner at the Great American Beer Festival.

The restaurant is just as large of a draw as the beer. While nothing incredible, the menu does offer some good food selections and the prices and atmosphere are similar to O’Charley’s and other chains. A solid, consistent establishment overall.

Establishment: Big River Grille and Brewing Works, Chattanooga, TN

Located across the street from the famed Tennessee Aquarium, Big River Grille and Brewing Works offers weary travelers a nice break from the from the tourist activities in downtown Chattanooga. This combines good- tasting brew with a full menu of food selections along with billiards and lots of televisions to watch your favorite sports.

There are six beers in the regular lineup: Southern Flyer Light Lager, Vienna Lager, Sweet Magnolia, Iron Horse Stout, House brand IPA, and Imperial 375 Pale Ale. The standouts are Sweet Magnolia- a sweet brown ale with the taste of chocolate malt, molasses, and maple syrup; and Iron Horse Stout- a beer with a roasted malt taste with touches of coffee and burnt flavors. These latter two products have won awards at the Great American Beer Festival, adding further proof of their superiority. The others are pretty good, although not outstanding. There is usually one seasonal beer on tap, to round things out, for a total of seven choices.

Food portions here are large and the cost is reasonable. A sandwich platter sells for between $6 and $10 and dinners sell for between $9 and $20. Sports viewing and billiards round out the experience, making Big River Grille and Brewing Works a nice place to stop if you’re in the area.

Establishment: Anchor Brewing Company, San Francisco, CA

Anchor is one of the nation's premiere craft breweries. Founded by Fritz Maytag of appliance fame, this brewery's products are sold all over the country in bottled form and in keg form in many places.

The tour of the facility is a must if your're in the area. The people are helpful and friendly and the informative tour covers all the stages of the brewing process. It ends in the tasting room where you can share a glass or two of all the Anchor products. Everything is great, except perhaps Anchor Small (a by- product of Liberty Ale) and many products taste even better on tap than from a bottle, especially Old Foghorn Barley Wine.

Awesome products and awesome people make Anchor a brewery worth visiting. If you're in the area, take the time to schedule a tour. You'll be happy you did.
