Great Good Good Great Good

Establishment: Gentle Ben's Brewing Company, Tucson, AZ

Great neighborhood; almost adjacent to University of Arizona campus. Several other pubs nearby. Free WiFi.

Half a dozen or so regular brews plus one or two seasonal. I tried the India Pale, Porter and Java Stout. All were very good with no obvious flaws.

Expanded pub grub menu. The dinner salad I had was good.

I would definitely return, but I also might save room to check out one of the neighboring pubs.

Establishment: The Barking Dog, Bethesda, MD

I'd guess about 20 beers on tap. I tend to be a hop head. Their IPAs included Sierra Nevada, Flying Dog, Red Hook and Starr Hill. Burgers, dogs and other pub grub. 20s & 30s crowd - definitely younger than my group. Felt like a local joint; not a chain, which yields extra points in my book.

Establishment: Great Waters Brewing Company, Saint Paul, MN

Not sure how to reconcile my experience with the previous reviews. They had about 4 casks and 6 conventional brews of their own on tap. They ranged from very light to a motor oil-like Oatmeal stout. I can’t fathom how others would rate that as a So So, N/A or Lousy Beer Selection. In my experience, 4 different casks on-tap is a very good selection. I think there were some guest brews but I wasn’t really paying attention.

I had the walleye for dinner. It was fine.

No complaints about the service.

Awesome! Great Good Great Great

Establishment: Barley John's Brew Pub, New Brighton, MN

Small place with very much of a local feel. About half a dozen of their own brews on tap + another 4 or 5 guest brews. One of the best IPAs I've ever had. Their porter was good, but not great. I almost tried the Oatmeal Pale Ale, but since I was driving I decided to pass.

Pub grub plus some interesting specials. I tried the sausage hash.

It's not the easiest place to find and there doesn't seem to be much of interest nearby, but it's definitely worth a visit.

Great Great Good Good Good

Establishment: Ale House 'The Beer Joint of Your Dreams', Vestal, NY

Small place with three dozen drafts + lots of bottles. Most of the drafts were regionals, many from NY.

Limited menu of sandwiches and pizza.

Very friendly crowd. My wife and I were visiting the area for a wedding. She started talking to a couple of guys about the beers they were drinking. Soon they were offering to let her have a taste from their glasses - and we're old, so it's not like they were hitting her.

Overall it's an oasis in an area that's being overrun by franchises.

Awesome! Great Great Good Great

Establishment: Mad Fox Brewing Company, Falls Church, VA

This is a relatively new (opened July, 2010) brewpub that's focusing on the quality of their beer and food. The brewer is experienced (all of his awards are listed on the web site) and personable. He's often walking around and happy to talk about customers' likes & dislikes. When we chatted he said that all styles were selling faster than he had expected.

The food is made from scratch. It's very nice to find new restaurants that stand apart from chains, franchises and those places that cook whatever Sysco provides.

My only frustration is that the initial reactions have been so positive in general that the waiting times for dinners on weekends are longer than I want to wait.

Great Great Good Good Good

Establishment: Kelly's Brewpub, Albuquerque, NM

They have several of their own brews, plus a couple of dozen "guest" beers. The guest beers included 4 different Sierra Nevada brews, which shows they'r not really targeting the Coors Light crowd. I tried the house IPA and Imperial Stout. It's a yougn, casual crowd with a big outdoor seating area.

Note: the address is 3222 Central Ave. SE, not 3200 as it says above (3200 is a Korean Barbeque).

Establishment: King Arthur's Steak House and Brew Pub, Oswego, NY

I drove 20 miles to check out this place - only to be met with a sign saying that they were not selling any alcoholic beverages while they renewed their liquor license. My general predisposition is that local, state and federal bureaucrats make up a bunch of complex rules that serve no useful purpose. However, I would have to think that near the top of the priority list of any brew pub would be managing their license renewal without interruption. I did not stay to sample their food.

Establishment: Elysian Brewing Company - Capitol Hill, Seattle, WA

6 of their own on tap + 6 guest beers. I had an IPA and a Porter. Both were good. They also had about 2 dozen Belgians in bottles.

The bartender seemed preoccupied with whatever he was doing at the other end of the bar. It was difficult to get his attention, ever after my first pint was empty.

Small pub-grub menu. I did not eat so I cannot offer an opinion.

It's a neighborhood joint. I saw more ink on men and women than I can remember seeing anywhere.

Right by the Pike Market, which had me concerned. Would it be a high-priced tourist joint. I'm happy to say that the beer and the food were great. Ten of their own on tap. I had their IPA and Stout. Both were very good to great with no flaws that I could detect. They also have about half a dozen guest beers on tap. I had an excellent seafood salad.

Appears to be closed. I found a building clearly marked 625 Courtney Street in Victoria, but it's a spa, not a brewpub. The website link within PubCrawler appears to be a deadend too.

I walked in with very low expectations - expecting a tourist trap, but came out very happy. Their own beers were Pale, IPA, Brown, Porter and their flagship Spruce Tips. They also have several other regionals on tap. We tried a sampler plus pints of IPA and Spruce Tips. All were very good to excellent. The Spruce Tips was subtle, not overwhelming.

Everyone in my party of 6 enjoyed their meals. It's unusual to not hear one of my kids complaining about something.

10 of their own on tap, including the usual styles. I made it through IPA, Porter & Stout. All were very good. Typical pub grub fare. Family friendly, although somewhat limited seating on the family side.

Establishment: Golden City Brewery, Golden, CO

Great, quirky little place. I had an IPA which was wonderfully full bodied. Around 8 different styles available. Weird hours! The sign on the door says 11:30 - 6:30, 7 days. I've never heard of last call at 6:30.

Establishment: Katie Mullen's Irish Pub, Denver, CO

Premium or upscale Irish bar and restaurant. The usual suspects for beer: Guinness, Harp, Smithwicks, Sierra Nevada plus several regionals that don't often make it to the east coast. Distinctive menu with pub grub and good entrees. Great people watching.

Establishment: Silver Dollar Bar and Grill, Jackson, WY

This is a good little joint within a pricey tourist area. Probably 8 - 10 beers on tap with another 12 -15 in bottles. All of the usual suspects plus several local regional brews. Buffalo, elk and other game on the menu, which is a nice change from the standard American fare. Live music some nights.

A great selection of great brews. I did not catch from the reviews below that they do not serve food - just bags of chips & nuts. They did, however, encourage me order something for delivery and eat at the bar.

Great Awesome! Great Awesome! Great

Establishment: Freakin' Frog Beer and Wine Cafe, Las Vegas, NV

An unquestionably quirky joint with a great selection of beer and good burgers & such. I stopped in before grabbing a redeye flight home. I called a cab to get to the airport, which took its time showing up. As I was getting visibly nervous, the bartender said, “Don’t worry. If your cab isn’t here in another 5 minutes, one of us will run you over to the airport.” You don’t find service like that on the Strip.

Good Good Great Good Good

Establishment: Nine Fine Irishmen, Las Vegas, NV

Anything on the Strip has something of a contrived feel with lots of paint & fiberglass (authenticity by Disney), but they make a decent attempt here. Hearty portions of pub grub. Good tunes in the evenings. Good selection of English & Irish ales. It’s a good respite from the ubiquitous light lagers. The outdoor tables are a great place to hang out and watch the tourists wander up and down the Strip.

Great Great Good Good Great

Establishment: Dogfishhead Alehouse, Falls Church, VA

My wife and I will often stop in on a Sunday afternoon, trying to delay Monday. There are probably about a dozen of the Dogfish beers on tap. The food is higher end pub grub - typical sandwiches plus pizzas, steaks, pasta.

The only unfortunate part is that it is one of the few such establishments in the area, so the wait to get a table on a Friday or Saturday evening can easily exceed an hour.

Establishment: Schlafly (aka The Saint Louis Brewery Tap Room), Saint Louis, MO

I almost stayed in and had dinner in the hotel restaurant. But I'm very happy I made the effort to check out this place. They had a dozen beers on tap, whihc is more than many brewpubs around the country. I had the American Pale, Porter and Imperial Stout. All were very good.

The menu had some unusual choices - lamb and pot roast sandwiches. I'm very fond of pub grub, but it gets repetitive after a while. It was nice to see unusual choices. The lamb sandwich was excellent.

Good So So So So Great So So

Establishment: Hilton Head Brewing Company, Hilton Head Island, SC

There are a couple of warning signs here. The list of house brews (light, IPA, Porter, winter seasonal & raspberry wheat) was written on a chalkboard from Bud. I asked both the hotel bellman and the cabbie if they knew of it. They both said, You might want to eat somewhere else and stop by for a beer after dinner. When a coworker and I arrived on a Monday evening at 7:30, there were two other patrons there. Two more parties came in before we left.

The two beers I had (IPA and Porter) were fine, but unexciting. I try to be very supportive of brewpubs, but I doubt I will go back.

Great Awesome! Great Great Great

Establishment: Yard House, Phoenix, AZ

I counted over 100 beers on tap. The guys next to me ordered Bud Light. The Yard House claims to have the largest draft selection in the country; I think there are probably 50 bars that make the same claim.

The menu is a step above typical pub grub. They have burgers & wings at good prices, but they also have Asian noodles and seared tuna. It's in walking distance of the Marriott Desert Ridge, which for me created a welcome respite from the typcial conference banquet fare. THe next time I'm in the area I will return.

Great Great N/A Lousy Good

Establishment: Coeur d'Alene Brewing Company, Coeur D'Alene, ID

Very nice selection of 10 - 12 brews. The three I had were all very good (IPA, Porter, Stout). The service, however, was terrible. I arrived at around 7:30 and was told they were only serving appetizers. Around 8:00 they said the kitchen was now closed. The bartenders were playing with their mobile phones and appeared to be annoyed when anyone spoke up to ask for service (which was necessary because they were not going to look up).

Great Great Good So So Great

Establishment: BJ's Restaurant and Brewery, Reno, NV

A fine joint several miles south of Reno. It is clearly a big, chain-type brewpub, much like Rock Bottom or CB & Potts - although I would give BJ's bonus points for a better than average selection.
