Establishment: North Star Pub, New York, NY

Another great bar in New York dies. THis was truly a shame, as they seemed to care about their clientele and strived for authenticity, even at the Seaport. Still, all the equipment and furniture seems to still be inside, which raises the possibility that someone may try to resurrect the space.

Establishment: Bear Bar, New York, NY

Say bye-bye. Bear Bar has been gone for several months as of this writing. As noted before, they had a nice selection of micros, but the obnoxious kids who frequented this place didn't exactly make life wonderful for the neighbors.

Nothing else seems poised to move in any time soon, either. Looks like it was bombed out to be perfectly honest.

Great Great N/A Great Great

Establishment: Bar 54, New York, NY

Nearly 20 beers on tap daily, most of which are good microbrews from good distributors. Large selection of Brooklyn beers, recently have had Magic Hat, Yuengling, Harpoon, Southampton beers among many others. Can't beat the $2 pints before 7:00 weekdays either! After-work crowd starts to filter in around 5:30 but there's usually ample space at the bar and tables.

Establishment: Standings was Brewsky's, New York, NY

BREWSKY'S IS NO LONGER IRISH!!!! Well, the taps are more solidly British and American now. Four Anchor taps (Liberty, Porter, Steam, Old Foghorn), Old Speckled Hen, a cider, local micro Ramstein, and several other English and Irish taps offer a nice range of styles to choose from. Plus the prices are way down now. Well worth stopping by any night if you enjoy goodbeer.

Establishment: Carnegie Hill Brewing Company, New York, NY

Seem to be trying new things every so often; there's a Bock on tap right now, alongside such regulars as their wheat and "Carnegie Pale Ale" and some light lager, I believe. That said, they still seem to sell more Coors Light and Bud bottles, but oh well. Well-made beers, at least as good as others brewed in the city, and at least they're still in business!

Good Good N/A So So So So

Establishment: Typhoon Brewery, New York, NY

Pretty stock style representations -- Golden Ale, Pale, IPA, along with a Bock and a wheat beer -- but quality varied widely. Bock and IPA were above average (don't see enough bocks in the city in spring) but the wheat was nearly undrinkable. Shame, really -- trendy bar 'scene' with overworked bar staff drawing double duty as waiters. Not worth it if you're only there for the beer, but I hear the food isn't bad though it's expensive.

Second the motion on the wait staff -- attentive, friendly folks run the place, Belgian beers on tap, healthy winter beer selection, and Trivia on Wednesdays -- what's not to like?

Oh, forgot to tell you they take a week off for Labor Day each year. You need to come back as winter approaches and the big beers start appearing on tap. Don't forget to A) buy the weekly Metrocard or the Daily Fun Pass depending on the length of your stay, and B) go to the Ginger Man on a weekend afternoon early, and escape the big crowds and see the doors open!

Great Great Great Great Great

Establishment: The Onion, New York, NY

Having undergone a name change to Mica Lounge or something, it's the same bar/restaurant as The Onion, same owners, etc. but with quieter music and a big flat-panel TV in the back playing obscure, weird shows.

The beer is still well-represented, with around a dozen taps or more, everything from a couple of macros to Paulaner, Rogue and Young's. Always a few interesting ones. And the food, though standard sandwich/burger fare, is a fine accompaniment to a relaxed, dimly-lit outing.

N/A So So Good So So So So

Establishment: Tobacco Roadhouse Restaurant and Brewpub, Durham, NC

The March 2 commentor forgot Old Heidelberg, which came right after Weeping Radish...all the "brewpubs" in this space used to use Weeping Radish beers, the last couple have tried making their own. The place is too damn big to support a bar and a restaurant in Durham. It's a shame, really, because each successive owner seems to kill it a little bit more. Someday there should be a reunion of all the previous owners. If they bring their families, I bet the place finally fills up!

Oh, and dump the bathroom murals which have been there since Steve & Clark's opened. Dumb dumb dumb.

Establishment: West Side Brewing Company, New York, NY

The place has dumped the brewing aspect of its existence in a remodeling, opening up again as a restaurant with beer from, I believe, Chelsea Brewing. It's always sad to see a brewpub go in a city where they're rare to begin with.

Establishment: Tap Room, New York, NY

Wish they'd try something more exciting in the spring, like perhaps a bock or even, I dunno, an ale maybe? Had a pilsner, weisse, dunkelweisse (the best of the bunch), marzen, and light lager of some sort on tap.

Beer prices are reasonable, but the food is a bit more upscale though it's worth every dime. Nice bar setup, looks like a place to see and be seen during crowded times.

Establishment: Blind Tiger Ale House, New York, NY

Nice, laid-back beer establishment in a quiet part of town. Over 20 taps, with Brooklyn well-represented, and a handpump as well! Great selection of other micros available, and since it's spring, a healthy number of wheat beers in all its forms. Reasonable prices, nice bartender, all the good qualities of a beer bar.

Establishment: The Onion, New York, NY

(Wish pubcrawler was still operational behind the scenes, but oh well...) Hidden on the second floor, The Onion has about a dozen good beer taps and a fairly good American food selection. The music could be dropped a couple of notches and lights ratcheted up a couple, but it looks to be a pleasant place to take a date who likes beer too. Beer was fresh, and the Young's Luxury Stout is wonderful from the tap -- I hope they can keep this one running for awhile, and rotate new beers in over time.

Establishment: Mugs Ale House, Brooklyn, NY

Great location and great bar. Cheap pints (Old Foghorn Imperial pint for $4? Get out!). Lots of twentysomethings on a Friday night, drinking good beer! What could go wrong? Plus, it's only a block or two from the Brooklyn Brewery. And they have a barleywine festival mid-March. Overall cool place.

Establishment: Burp Castle, New York, NY

Closed by the city Jan. 11 for a license violation of some sort -- likely that they were operating without one, but I'm not certain.

Hopefully they can re-open very soon (they were still closed as of 1/19).

Establishment: The Onion, New York, NY

Former site of the East Side Ale House, this restaurant has a dozen or so taps, including Young's Double Chocolate Stout, Magic Hat Blind Faith, Paulaner Hefe and Southampton IPA the night I stopped in. Quite dim inside, music too loud (as most disco will be), but food was good bar fare and prices were reasonable. Could become trendier if word gets out, but for now a decent new addition to the Upper East Side.

Aside from its location below Pure Gold, a good restaurant with excellent beer selection. Several Brooklyn and Rogue beeers on tap, as well as a dozen more local brews and regionals. Good bar food menu, and they have NTN trivia and lots of TVs -- a GoodBeer sports bar! What a concept.

Establishment: Fox and Hound English Pub and Grille, Cary, NC

Best pub in the Triangle area. No better place to get English beers on tap -- their Fuller's ESB is outstanding. Pub area quite similar to English pubs, even. Plus, the Carolina (Brewing Co.) Pale Ale on cask is one of the best cask beers you'll find anywhere. Restaurant-area menu is consistently outstanding, ranging from excellent pub grub and fish and chips to elk and lamb. Can't go wrong at this place.

Establishment: David Copperfield's, New York, NY

Good place to bring beer drinkers and non-drinkers alike. With Raison d'Etre, SN Celebration (5$/pint), and Corsendonk Christmas Ale ($7) on tap last week, definitely a must-stop for the serious beer drinker. Plus, the menu is relatively inexpensive and the food excellent for a bar/restaurant combo. Not smoky, either. Enjoyed my first visit, expect more trips soon!

Establishment: Heartland Brewery at Union Square, New York, NY

Is it me or is Heartland getting more expensive? The beer is still $5/pint, but the menu is getting pricier and stingier -- entrees go into the mid-teens, not including a vegetable, or salad, or potato any more. Nonetheless, still a trendy, crowded weeknight/end spot, never any room at the bar.

Establishment: Ginger Man, New York, NY

Best time for a beer enthusiast to visit is a Sat. or Sun. afternoon. The $3.75 13 oz, or $5 Imperial pints aren't painful to the wallet, and the sandwiches are reasonably priced and good. Obviously the taps are amazing -- name a style, they have a winner. And the casks are back for the fall! Except for the cigar prevalence, and the very busy bartenders, what's not to like?

Bottle selection was good enough; taps not anything exciting. But I definitely felt like I was back in college, which at this point in life isn't exactly a positive. But it seems a good place to start appreciating good beer. (Stay away from the Bud funnels!)

Place just keeps getting better! Always a great selection on the 12 or so taps, plus a handpump. Best place to find Victory on draft, too. Less crowded during the afternoon on weekends, and happy hour stretches to 7:00 or 7:30!

Quality has declined recently, IMHO. Still 12 taps, but three are cider. Others are uninspired and overpriced, even for Manhattan. Granted, last time I went was on a Monday, but the place was completely deserted -- even missing the bartender at times. Business picks up a lot on wekeends, fortunately.
